Materials Needed: LAPTOPS W/ INTERNET ACCESS, ASSIGNMENT PACKET, RUBRIC. Students will…TSW BE GIVEN A TWO PART ASSIGNMENT DESIGNED TO INTRODUCE THE
IMPORTANT HARLEM RENAISSANCE POET LANGSTON HUGHES. THE FIRST PART OF THE ASSIGNMENT REQUIRES STUDENTS TO DO INTERNET RESEARCH TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS LIFE AND THE HISTORICAL PERIOD IN WHICH HE LIVED. STUDENTS WILL NEXT READ A SAMPLING OF HIS POEMS AND RESPONDTHROUGH ANALYSIS (DISCUSSION QUESTIONS), PERSONAL OPINION JOURNALS, AND CREATIVE ASSIGNMENTS (INCLUDING COMPUTER GENERATED POETRY IMAGE MAPS.)

Reflection on lesson: I think this lesson went very well. It requires a lot of careful
observation on my part (in order to keep students on task when they are using laptops) but students do a great job evaluating the time period and its influence on Hughes and his poetry.)
