SITUATION REPORT No. 2
Tropical Storm Hanna
Georgia Emergency Management Agency
State Operations Center
Operational Period September 3, 2008 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
(Information Current as of 7:00 PM)
According to the latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast, Tropical Storm Hanna is beginning its' track northwest toward the central Bahamas. Hanna has sustained winds of 60 mph and a forward speed of 12 mph with an increase in speed and intensity expected. While Hanna is combating significant upper-level wind shear, it is maintaining tropical storm status and intensification into a hurricane within 36 to 48 hours is likely. The latest forecast track by the NHC is a favorable one for Georgia as coastal areas are no longer within the cone of uncertainty. Significant impacts are unlikely along coastal areas of Georgia; however, forecasters urge coastal citizens to remain vigilant as minor changes in the forecast for Hanna could result in a heightened threat. The expected impacts in coastal areas of Georgia are now limited to rough seas and occasionally gusty winds upwards of 40 to 50 mph while the outer rain bands arrive during the afternoon and evening of Friday. Rainfall forecasts are minimal and the threat for tornadoes should occur further to the north into the Carolinas.
