DAN is . . .
Divers Helping Divers Divers Alert Network, Inc. (DAN®) was founded in 1980. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization associated with the Duke University Health System (DUHS), DAN America is supported by the world’s largest association of recreational divers. Many of the DAN staff of 74 are themselves divers with distinguished records in the scuba diving industry, The byword of the staff is simple: provide superlative service to DAN Members. The organization is strategically located in Durham, N.C., which is known as the “City of Medicine.” DAN America serves the North American, Latin American and Caribbean recreational dive communities. It also serves as the world headquarters for International DAN (IDAN), the federation of DAN affiliates in Europe, Japan, Southern Africa and the Southeast-Asia Pacific region. The IDAN federation forms a global safety net for recreational scuba divers, with diving emergency hotlines and rescue capabilities. The Number Divers Call in An Emergency . . . From the time DAN began as a single telephone hotline at Duke University Medical Center’s F.G. Hall Hypo / Hyperbaric Laboratory, the organization has contributed greatly to the safety of recreational diving and the understanding of dive physiology. DAN’s best-known service continues to be its 24-Hour Diving Emergency Hotline. On call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the highly trained DAN dive medical team also provides emergency medical consultation and coordinates emergency medical evacuation and treatment. ... or with Questions about Dive Medicine During regular business hours (9:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eastern Time), DAN medics answer the DAN Dive Safety and Medical Information Line; they also respond to email queries that come to DAN via www.DiversAlertNetwork.org. Providing these services — expert medical information and advice for the benefit of the diving public at no charge — are central to the DAN Mission. The Future of Dive Research DAN is the world leader in medical research into aspects of recreational dive safety. Through its research arm, DAN has delved into many issues affecting the recreational diver, including: determining scientifically based surface intervals for divers who plan to fly after diving; conducting ongoing studies on aging and its effect on diver health; and researching the medical advisability of diving with insulin-requiring diabetes. DAN Research has also undertaken international data-collection effort, gathering real dive (in-water) profiles from recreational divers using dive computers. With Project Dive Exploration (PDE), these profiles — essentially, road maps of each dive recorded on dive computers — are collected by volunteers and delivered to DAN via the internet. The analyzed data assists DAN scientists in understanding the relationship of the risk of decompression illness (DCI) to physical, medical and
Mission Statement
Divers Alert Network (DAN), a non-profit organization, exists to provide expert medical information and advice for the benefit of the diving public. DAN’s historical and primary function is to provide emergency medical advice and assistance for underwater diving injuries and to promote diving safety. • DAN promotes and supports underwater diving research and education, particularly as it relates to the improvement of diving safety, medical treatment and first aid. • DAN strives to provide the most accurate, up-to-date and unbiased information on issues of common concern to the diving public, primarily, but not exclusively, for diving safety.
behavioral factors. The results of this study are likely to form the basis of future dive table and dive computer models. A source of training and continuing medical education, DAN develops, administers and conducts dive first aid and medical training programs for divers, scuba instructors and medical professionals. DAN Instructors teach oxygen first aid courses, classes on the use of automated external defibrillators and a course on preventing and treating marine life injuries. With its efforts to train divers how to respond to a dive medical emergency, DAN also designs and markets emergency oxygen delivery systems and first aid equipment. Through its subsidiary, DAN Services, Inc., DAN also reaches the lifeguard and swimming community, who can benefit from specialized aquatic training. Such programs are based on DAN’s expertise in oxygen first aid. Each year, DAN’s Continuing Medical Education department reaches out to physicians, nurses, emergency medical services personnel and dive leaders by conducting classes in such dive-related topics as recognizing and treating decompression illness, hazardous marine life injuries, dive physiology and more. Supported By Its Members With membership, DAN Members receive medical evacuation and travel assistance services, and are eligible to purchase affordable dive accident insurance.
DAN Members also receive a subscription to the award-winning Alert Diver magazine, and have direct access to the organization’s product line of books, videos, first aid kits, oxygen units and other products developed for safety-minded divers. More than 219,000 active divers consider DAN Membership as necessary to safe and enjoyable diving as their C-cards, masks, fins and regulators. At $29 a year (for individuals; family membership is available at $44), DAN Membership is one of the best values in scuba. DAN also maintains a Development program that includes hundreds of dive retailers, resorts, charter boats, scuba manufacturers, dive clubs and instructors who provide DAN visibility to divers and dive students. Statement from the
The completion of Fiscal Year 2004 marked the historic transition to new leadership and new beginnings at DAN. Your President arrived in March, assuming the helm from DAN’s Acting President Dan Orr. We all owe Dan our thanks for leading DAN successfully through challenging times. After a nationwide search, five new members were elected to the dedicated DAN Board of Directors. At DAN Headquarters, we initiated intensive strategic planning, devoting hundreds of hours to gathering information from you, our stakeholders. You helped your staff assess DAN’s strengths and opportunities for improvement. Using this information and closely aligned with our vision and mission, we began to chart a course of expanded service to the diving community. The 2004 Divers Alert Network Annual Progress Report offers a clear picture of DAN, its multiple missions and its many stakeholders. Its message of dive health, safety and medicine resounds throughout the diving community — to our newest members, to businesses who champion DAN and its message of dive safety, to so many healthcare professionals, whether they are medics, dive physicians, chamber technicians or research professionals. As our actions attest and as our publications underscore, DAN is much more than a telephone number and provider of insurance and travel assistance. Whatever the need, DAN responds with some 74 highly skilled employees and qualified dive medical professionals, augmented by hundreds of dedicated and selfless volunteers with expertise in dive medicine, research, training, medical education, customer service and materials control. The DAN team of specially trained on-call physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency and dive medical technicians are there for your call. Our medical professionals answer dive emergency calls around the clock, seven days a week, holidays and weekends. In its first 24 years, DAN answered more than a quarter of a million emergency and medical information queries (37,532 emergency calls, 187,000 information calls and 26,000 emails). Via the world’s only diving emergency hotline (+1-919-684-4326, or 4DAN) and dive medical information number (+1-919-684-2948), DAN on-call medical professionals are there for you. For Fiscal Year 2004, the organization remained financially sound due to good stewardship of the resources we were entrusted with. Membership remained relatively stable, as did gifts and donations. DAN’s insurance programs provided excellent benefits at competitive rates. Improved medical treatment procedures and prudent claims management allowed the insurance revenues to underwrite enhanced medical and research initiatives. Today,
President
as DAN prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to providing medical emergency assistance to divers in need and promoting dive safety through research, education, products and services. We celebrated the 10th year of our Recompression Chamber Assistance Program (RCAP), which delivers essential support to chamber facilities and staff throughout the world. By providing critical material and training support through RCAP, DAN has invested tens of thousands of dollars to ensure that remote — and some domestic — chambers remain open and operational. The result of this investment is quality care for our DAN Members far from home. This year DAN Research achieved 100,000 dive profiles collected from divers worldwide as part of our ongoing data gathering effort called Project Dive Exploration. Through this and other research initiatives, DAN obtains answers to questions on dive safety and health, investigates causes and incidences of injuries, and seeks to improve treatment of diving injuries. Each year we publish our data in the Report on Decompression Illness, Diving Fatalities and Project Dive Exploration, making it available to DAN Members free on the DAN website (www.DiversAlertNetwork.org). It provides valuable information to our members and to the entire diving community. This report, through its educational value, influences behavior and helps reduce dive accidents and injuries. Through its educational outreach in 2004, DAN Training developed and managed programs critical to dive safety and the management of diving injuries. Nearly 150,000 recreational divers are now better prepared to manage a dive emergency as DAN oxygen, hazardous marine life, BLSPRO or AED providers. DAN continued to provide topnotch educational opportunities for medical professionals through its Continuing Medical Education (CME) initiatives. The first DAN Diving Medical Technician course was a resounding success, and the ongoing physician training courses continued to receive high ratings as they trained attendees to recognize and manage dive emergencies. After nearly two decades and more than 50 CME courses, more than 2,000 medical and other healthcare professionals have received DAN training, both at Duke University Medical Center and at off-site diving venues. Many of these professionals have become part of the DAN Physician Referral Network; they now provide assistance to divers needing local or regional medical advice. Each course broadens the expertise of all participating professionals. That directly benefits you and me when we need advice and assistance. DAN will continue to provide services you have come to expect and deserve. Thank you for your continued support!

Key Accomplishments in
Fiscal Year 2004
“We are meeting the challenges of the future head on and working hard for each and every member.”
Project Dive Exploration exceeded 100,000 recorded dive profiles. The liveaboard Nekton Rorqual collected the 100,000th dive. In FY2004, DAN on-call medics and physicians responded to 2,909 emergency calls. This brought the total number of emergency calls addressed to 39,000 since DAN was founded in 1980.
— Dan Orr
To counter concerns that the cost of disposable tools might make a diver hesitate to provide care in an emergency, DAN Training created an Emergency Equipment Replacement program. Any DAN Member who uses a REMO2 Unit or AED pads purchased from DAN after October 2003 in a documented dive accident can receive a replacement REMO2 unit or set of AED pads free from DAN. To receive the replacement equipment, the DAN Member must apply to DAN with copies of documentation about the actual emergency. The Communications staff began preparation in FY2004 for the DAN 25th anniversary celebration, which will revisit significant events during DAN’s history. The bimonthly Alert Diver magazine will be the focal point for the look back. In FY2004, 2,917 instructors enrolled their students in the DAN Student Membership program, up 8 percent from FY2003. A total of 41,689 student divers became DAN student members (up 11 percent), resulting in more than 5,800 new DAN Members (a 14 percent conversion rate). DAN and International Divers Alert Network co-sponsored the 50th DAN and First IDAN Physiology and Medicine of Diving Course March 28-April 8, 2004 in Cape Town, South Africa. The participation of the South African Navy and others presented a variety of diving scenarios, including rebreathers, helicopter ditching, transfer under pressure exercises etc. The year also had the first DAN / Duke Diver Medical Technician (DMT) course, a joint effort by CME and Training.
The International Department expanded its presence in Latin America in FY2004 by adding two new Area Regional Field Representatives. Dr. Matías Nochetto, based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, covers the southernmost areas of the South American cone. Hugo Marino, based in Caracas, Venezuela, covers Venezuela, Colombia and Central America (not including Mexico). To help DAN Business Members increase visibility and sales of DAN retail merchandise, DAN developed a Point-ofPurchase display. It is available free to any DBM who commits to a minimum package of retail products. The display stands more than 6 feet tall but takes up only a few feet of floor space. In the period reflected by this report, July 1, 2003-June 30, 2004, DAN Development recorded $719,340 in giving by individuals, businesses, and foundations (DAN Members and non-members). Unrestricted giving accounted for --% of gifts received, with ___% designated for particular projects/funds and ---% to The DAN Endowment. Working closely with other departments, Information Technology regularly updated the DAN website. In addition to launching a Spanish version of the site in FY2004, IT added tools for instructors, a completely revised Research section, medical reports for members only and more. These improvements resulted in a 37 percent increase in visits by more than a million visitors each year. This year there have been 43,553 telephone inquires from the general DAN Membership toll-free line, 2,008 calls answered from the ProMembership toll-free line and 127 calls on the new dedicated DAN Trip Insurance Information line.

DAN
Research
The DAN Mission identifies the purpose of research as to assist in improving dive safety. Injuries that affect dive safety include decompression illness and barotrauma. Improving safety requires learning the causes of these injuries so that their incidence, severity and number can be reduced. DAN Research activities in FY2004 toward this end included the following: Flying After Diving • The Flying After Recreational Diving Workshop Proceedings were published and are available free to DAN Members on the Research section of the DAN website. The Proceedings present the revised flying after recreational diving guidelines and discuss their rationale. • The results of DAN’s experimental trials that formed the basis for the revised flying after diving guidelines were published in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. • Additional flying after diving trials are continuing at the Duke University Hyperbaric Center with support provided by the U.S. Navy and Duke Hyperbaric Center. • The problems of flying with symptoms of decompression illness and flying after recompression therapy were investigated and presented at a joint DAN / Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society workshop on the “Management of Mild Decompression Illness in Remote Locations.” Project Dive Exploration • Project Dive Exploration exceeded 100,000 recorded dive profiles. The liveaboard Nekton Rorqual collected the 100,000th dive. • Seven Research Interns collected more than 5,000 dive profiles at locations in Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Florida, Texas, Vancouver, B.C. and Wilmington, N.C.
• The risk of decompression sickness was found to be significantly greater in cold-water wreck divers in Scapa Flow, Scotland when compared with warm-water Caribbean divers. 2004 Report on Decompression Illness, Diving Fatalities and Project Dive Exploration Highlights • Between 1987-2002, the mean age of injured divers increased from 33 to 39 years. The mean age of fatalities increased from 39 to 48 years. • Obesity was proportionally more frequent among dive fatalities than in PDE or injured divers for 2002. Diabetes • Results of DAN’s observational study of diabetes and diving were published in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. • A workshop on recreational diving and diabetes will be held in conjunction with the UHMS annual meeting in June 2005. Rebreather Presentation Self-contained recirculating underwater breathing apparatus, better known to sport divers as rebreathers, have been in use for more than 120 years, principally by the military, but increasingly during the past 50 years by recreational divers. A PowerPoint presentation on the principals, history, and operating characteristics of rebreathers was made available free to DAN Members on the DAN website. Scuba Epidemiological Reporting Form (SERF) A new tool, the Scuba Epidemiological Reporting Form (SERF), was developed to involve treating physicians more directly in the collection of diving injury data. The objective of the SERF is to improve the completeness and number of submitted cases.

Email Inquiries
Helping divers is our business. In addition to 24 / 7 help on the Diving Emergency Hotline, DAN offers divers much more. Promoting dive safety, emergency medical advice and assistance in diving injuries highlight DAN’s unique mission. This is the principal focus of DAN Medical Services. DAN provides a vital link for divers through its expert emergency and medical information and services, and during the past fiscal year, DAN received more than 15,500 inquiries, including DAN Members as well as non-members. The DAN Medical Department operates with two fulltime medics, one part-time medic and a Director of Medical Services. Increased staffing for DAN Medicine has helped overall efficiency, especially for the Medical Information services (telephone and email), as well as the DAN 24-Hour Diving Emergency Hotline. Multilingual medical advice and assistance services are also available through DAN TravelAssist. The demand for DAN Medical Services has remained constant. In FY2004, DAN on-call medics and physicians responded to 2,909 emergency calls. This brought the total number of emergency calls addressed to 39,000 since DAN was founded in 1980. Medical email inquiries have become an integral part of DAN’s medical information services and are generally submitted through the DAN website, www.DiversAlertNetwork.org. The increasing number of questions via the DAN website has accounted for the slow but steady decline in the Dive Safety and Medical Information Line telephone calls.
During FY2004, DAN Medicine fielded 4,277 electronic inquiries, representing greater than 30 percent of the general medical questions. This represents a total of 24,639 website inquiries since October 1995. This, in addition to the 8,321 telephone inquiries for medical information, brought the total number of general medical inquiries to 207,433 since 1980. The Medical Center section of the DAN website is where any user can review medical articles from Alert Diver and frequently asked questions (FAQs) about medical conditions and diving. This section was developed by the Medical Department staff. In FY2004, a total of 46 medical articles and 159 medical FAQs appeared on the website, covering topics ranging from gastrointestinal conditions to vertigo. The Diving Medicine section of the DAN website now receives between 6,000-7,000 visits each month. DAN also has increased support to the popular Recompression Chamber Assistance Program. This DAN outreach effort is funded solely by DAN Member contributions. This includes chamber education programs for chamber staff, assessment and inspection assistance, medical and chamber equipment, as well as maintenance and repair advice and assistance. In a new three-year initiative to assist remote chambers to help in meeting international risk assessment guidelines, DAN has now provided an onsite review of each referral facility in the Caribbean Basin.

DAN
Training
In FY2004, Training reintroduced the Remote Emergency Medical Oxygen (REMO2™) Program. At the same time, Training found ways to deliver new educational content to divers and dive professionals. Remote Emergency Medical Oxygen (REMO2™) The REMO2 program was suspended for more than two years because of manufacturing issues. DAN Training reintroduced the REMO2 unit and the related training program. DAN tested six possible replacement units before finding one that delivered equal or superior performance to the original REMO2 unit in all categories. REMO2 Online Orientation When the original REMO2 unit was suspended, more than 400 DAN Instructor Trainers and Instructors were left without a program, even though they had the certification. To make it easier for those instructors to return to Active Teaching status, DAN Training created a free online update that allows previously certified DAN REMO2 Trainers and Instructors to learn about changes to the unit and begin teaching immediately. Emergency Equipment Replacement Program The REMO2 Unit is a one-time-use disposable device. So are Automated External Defibrillator (AED) pads. To counter concerns that the cost of these disposable tools might make a diver hesitate to provide care in an emergency, DAN Training created an Emergency Equipment Replacement program. Any DAN Member who uses a REMO2 Unit or AED pads purchased from DAN after October 2003 in a documented dive accident can receive a replacement REMO2 unit or set of pads free from DAN. The Member must apply to DAN with documentation about the emergency.
Diver Medical Technician Course In FY2004, DAN hosted two Diver Medical Technician (DMT) courses at DAN and Duke University. These programs teach divers, who are emergency medical professionals, how to recognize and begin treatment for dive injuries. DMTs are also taught how to operate hyperbaric chambers and function as patient tenders inside a chamber during treatments. Class sizes are limited to 12 participants, and the first two programs have resulted in 23 certified DMTs. Ears and Diving Online Seminar To help bring dive information to the general diving public, DAN Training created its first online seminar for divers. Focusing on divers’ ears, and based on a lecture created by DAN Southern Africa Medical Director Dr. Frans Cronjé, the program educates divers on the effects of pressure and moisture on ears and shows divers ways to equalize their ears properly. It also shows what happens to the eardrums when the ears aren’t properly maintained. The seminar is in the Training section of the DAN website at www.DiversAlertNetwork.org. It costs $25 for a person to view the seminar and typically takes an hour to complete.

DAN
Communications
In concert with other DAN departments, DAN Communications disseminates the organization’s message and information to DAN Members, the dive media and the dive industry, nationally and internationally. During FY2004, Communications continued to distribute up-to-date information via DAN’s award-winning website, which provides: • What new members need to know; • Access to new programs; • Answers to frequently asked medical questions, whatever the dive subject; and • Finding a trainer in your area. DAN Communications also addresses queries and posts news releases both on the website and to the dive media. The Communications staff began preparation in FY2004 for the DAN 25th anniversary celebration, which will revisit significant events during DAN’s history. The bimonthly Alert Diver magazine will be the focal point for the look back. As always, the magazine addresses issues of dive safety, dive health and dive medicine. Communications collaborates with three other departments — Marketing, Business Membership and Training — to publish a quarterly newsletter, On Board, that also contains the Oxygen Window. Through this joint effort, now in its fourth year, DAN communicates information about DAN programs and DAN products to Business Members and Instructors, both valuable stakeholders in the organization. Communications continued to work with the Business Membership, Training and Information Technology departments to produce HighViz, an elec10 Divers Alert Network 2004 Annual Progress Report
tronic newsletter for Instructors and Business Members. The e-newsletter supplies up-todate thumbnail information about DAN products and programs. Communications continued its coordination and publication of the organization’s Annual Progress Report, the Report on Decompression Illness, Diving Fatalities and Project Dive Exploration and more recently, The Flying After Diving Workshop Proceedings. Copies of all are available in print or in downloadable form. DAN also published its Product Listing, which especially targets Business Members.
DAN
Marketing
DAN Marketing underwent several changes during the year, starting with hiring a new Vice President of Marketing and Business Development and restructuring several departments to improve efficiency and integration of the DAN marketing effort. There began a review of practices and materials along with initial planning to commemorate the DAN 25th-year milestone. A new ad to attract divers to join DAN ran in most dive media. There was a comprehensive 2004 DAN Product Listing created. Several trial direct mailings were tested to evaluate cost effective ways to gain new members. DEMA 2003 Show DAN had a strong showing at the fall DEMA 2003 Show in Miami. Dive professionals met with DAN staff and learned about new products and programs, including a Point of Purchase display and the REMO2 training program. Total sales of DAN products and training at DEMA 2003 exceeded $125,000. General Product Sales In late 2003, DAN introduced a broad range of new products, including a line of DAN Wear for men and women plus ProMembers. DAN also unveiled two versions of the Guardian Plus first aid kit, which incorporates the EZ-care system to help you to find what you need, when you need it. DAN shipped 11,952 orders in FY2004, which generated more than $1 million in product sales, down 9 percent from FY2003. DAN processed 609,352 pieces of mail, a 22 percent decrease from FY2003, mostly by emailing members more and thus saving postal expenses.
DAN Field Representatives visited more than 250 dive operations throughout the Western Hemisphere. DAN also exhibited at many consumer dive shows and events to talk about dive safety and DAN programs. Website Sales The DAN website (www.DiversAlertNetwork.org) received 2,488 product orders in FY2003. This saved approximately 195 man-hours in work time in processing and filling product orders. The DAN website generated approximately 46 million hits up from 30 million hits in FY2002. Twice as many visitors used the site over last year. (Update for FY2004) Student Membership Program This entry-level diver program is available through any active instructor in the Western Hemisphere. In FY2004, 2,917 instructors enrolled their students in the program, up 8 percent from FY2003. A total of 41,689 student divers became DAN student members (up 11 percent), resulting in more than 5,800 new DAN Members (a 14 percent conversion rate). More than 80 percent of DAN student members purchased DAN insurance. In FY2004 DAN began offering a Student Membership Program video CD to instructors. To learn more about new divers, DAN now invites student members to take part in a survey. The program and materials are free to students and instructors. It gives DAN an excellent method to promote its mission of dive safety and gain new members.

Continuing Medical Education
DAN Continuing Medical Education supports the DAN Mission of providing the most accurate, up-to-date and unbiased information on issues of common concern to the diving public through educational activities. DAN assists physicians and healthcare providers in obtaining new information that will lead to better quality and availability of care to the diving community worldwide. DAN CME activities are jointly sponsored by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). The past year was exciting and very successful, starting with the 48th Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Course on Aug. 7-9, 2003 at Duke University Medical Center. It compressed the educational opportunity of the weeklong course. Many attendees said this was excellent education in an efficient timeframe. DAN Training offered them optional Oxygen First Aid and Hazardous Marine Life courses. The 49th course at Waikoloa, Hawaii, Sept. 20-27, 2003 offered 24 hours of certified CME credit from UHMS. The faculty had practicing clinicians involved in active projects and cutting edge medicine. A typical comment was: “Fantastic course; management of the course was exceptional – DAN always makes you feel special, and you really receive good value for your time and money.” DAN and International Divers Alert Network co-sponsored the 50th DAN and First IDAN Physiology and Medicine of Diving Course March 28-April 8, 2004 in Cape Town, South Africa. The participation of the South African Navy and others permitted a variety of diving
scenarios, including rebreathers, helicopter ditching, transfer under pressure exercises, etc. IDAN Presidents on the faculty included Professor Alessandro Marroni (DAN Europe) and Dr. Frans Cronjé (DAN Southern Africa). Comments included: “I have been attending medical meetings for over 30 years, and without any doubt, DAN and its organizers are paramount not only in content but also orchestration.” “Excellent interaction / socialization with lecturers and personal attention.” “The overall organization and presentation was of such a standard that I would recommend DAN CME to all medical persons who are most likely to encounter injured divers as part of their normal duties.” The year also had the first DAN / Duke Diver Medical Technician (DMT) course, a joint effort by CME and Training. Details on it are in the Training section. Overall, DAN and it’s partners trained 116 physicians and health care providers, along with 23 diving medical technicians in diving medicine. These men and women are now on the front lines to assist divers in need throughout the world.

Building bridges is our business, and DAN helps dive businesses connect with their customers. Launched in 2000, DAN Business Membership continues to grow, with more than 1,000 dive businesses in 33 countries, all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its most important function is to partner with affiliated dive businesses to show the dive community that they support DAN and dive safety. DAN Business Members (DBMs) are dive shops, diver training centers, dive resorts, dive boats and liveaboard dive vessels. With an annual $125 membership fee, DBMs can receive many exclusive benefits. One is the DAN Retail Product Distribution Program. It lets businesses purchase selected DAN products with excellent profit margins for resale. To help DBMs increase visibility and sales of DAN retail merchandise, DAN developed a Point-of-Purchase display. It is available free to any DBM who commits to a minimum package of retail products. The display stands more than 6 feet tall but takes up only a few feet of floor space. New in 2004 was the DAN Trip Insurance Incentive Program. Since selling dive travel may be a big part of a DBM’s success, this program lets them offer customers the benefits of trip insurance coverage, with a cash incentive for doing so. The Rewards Program gives DBMs the opportunity to receive credit for soliciting new DAN Members. They earn a point for every new DAN Membership and insurance plan sold to someone they referred, and a point for every 10 student members they send to DAN. Points can accumulate over 24 months and be redeemed to obtain DAN products.
DBMs are listed on the DAN Dive Business Directory: this includes a hotlink to their website, with details as to what they offer at their operation. This is a tool for divers searching for dive centers or businesses in a particular location; it can aid in business increases for DBMs. Furthermore, DBMs can place a custom link on their web page back to the DAN website. Other items new DBMs receive include a certificate, a DAN Dive Flag, two DAN Memberships, a subscription to Alert Diver, and use of the DAN Business Member logo. They also get DAN’s quarterly publication On Board. As of 2003, between issues of On Board, an electronic newsletter, HighViz, began going to all DBMs. It delivers the latest news on DAN products, programs, and protocol. The Business Membership Department is comprised of dedicated customer service representatives who handle all Business Members’ questions and product orders. The team takes pride in providing top customer service. Combining this with an excellent benefits package ensures the high value placed on the designation “DAN Business Member,” and they are confident that the value of these benefits more than outweighs the membership cost.

Development
In the period reflected by this report, July 1, 2003-June 30, 2004, DAN Development recorded $704,719 in giving by individuals, businesses, and foundations (DAN Members and non-members). Unrestricted giving accounted for 41 percent of the total gifts received, with another 37 percent designated for particular projects/funds, 13 percent to The DAN Endowment and 9 percent in pledges and planned gifts. The majority of giving was designated as unrestricted. (Chart 1). Unrestricted giving is the most important category of gifts, as this funding is used across DAN where the need is greatest. Support for all facets of the DAN Mission was provided. As noted, the second highest level of giving was to restricted funds. The programs supported by these designated gifts are noted on chart 2. Please visit www.DiversAlertNetwork.org/development/designategift.asp for a full description of all programs. The DAN Endowment received gifts totaling some $88,514 this fiscal year. Four named funds were established under The DAN Endowment; one in memorial and the other three as part of planned gifts. The DAN Endowment is invested conservatively with TIAA CREF Retail Mutual Funds. As of June 30, 2004, The DAN Endowment was valued at $547,921, representing a 19% value increase over the last fiscal year. Two programs began this fiscal year. The first was the DAN Gift-By-Draft Program: a method for DAN Donors to give monthly via their checking account. This program has seen slow progress to date and is anticipated to grow slowly but steadily. The second is an extension of the $5 gift to The DAN Endowment via the E-Membership
Program. Previously part of the DAN Membership Brochure only, this opportunity to support The DAN Endowment was introduced to its electronic counterpart in late FY2004. To date it has seen a 15 percent participation rate of those members who join or renew their DAN Membership via the DAN website. Gifts-in-Kind continue to be generously provided by Corporate Donors with a 34 percent increase over last year. These gifts supported the 2003 DAN On-Line Auction, research, marketing, communications, and fundraising. Due to this support, these areas of DAN were able to carry out their work in support of the DAN Mission more efficiently and economically. During this period, three major fundraising events occurred: the Fall Fundraiser 2003 recorded $136,807, the Spring Fundraiser 2004 recorded $86,456 (from April 1 through June 30, 2004), and the 2003 DAN On-Line Auction raised $133,123 (in gifts-in-kind and winning bids). Combined, the three major fundraisers raised $356,386. DAN Corporate Donors, DAN Donor Dive Clubs and the Friends of DAN who are individuals consistently provided their support through fundraising events and outright gifts. For the listing of all DAN Donors of $100 and more, please see the DAN Development Donor Report on pages 25-30. We continue to strive to make giving to DAN a pleasant, easy and rewarding experience. We owe our thanks to the thousands of DAN members and friends providing their financial support through giving in the tradition of “Divers Helping Divers.”

Information Technology
Information lies at the core of our business. In addition to improving its quality and accuracy, DAN strives to provide secure and efficient access to information resources by a wide range of users, from staff to the dive community at large. DAN Information Technology’s (IT) primary function is to provide solutions, tools and support that ensure the highest return on DAN’s investment in information systems. DAN IT plans, develops, implements and maintains all technology systems and applications used to achieve DAN’s mission and support its strategic initiatives. During FY2004, IT upgraded most DAN desktop computers and servers to provide a more stable and efficient network environment. This included upgrades in security, tape backup and spam filtering. IT also played a significant role in designing and implementing a business continuity plan that includes a backup generator capable of powering the ground floor of DAN headquarters and allowing DAN to maintain mission-critical operations during emergency situations. This plan calls for ongoing improvement of DAN’s data and phone systems and infrastructure. Over the past year, DAN IT also developed custom web-based applications designed to enhance DAN’s services. One allows DAN to track DAN TravelAssist-related cases in real time while streamlining communications among DAN’s medical team, insurance claims processor and evacuation service provider. Another lets DAN Training develop online seminars. The first, “Ears and Diving,” was extremely well received by the dive community and medical experts. 16 Divers Alert Network 2004 Annual Progress Report
IT further enhanced E-Membership, launched in FY2003, which provides members online access to their membership and insurance information. As a result, more than 35 percent of all members join DAN or renew their existing membership online. More than 50 percent of all new members join DAN using the Internet, which has substantially reduced the resources required to process these applications. Working closely with other departments, IT regularly updates the DAN website. In addition to launching Spanish and Portuguese versions of the site in FY2004, IT added tools for instructors, a completely revised Research section, medical reports for members only and more. These improvements resulted in a 37 percent increase in visits by more than a million visitors each year. Additionally, IT continues to leverage the Internet to communicate with DAN members and find more costeffective ways to service the dive community. Two examples are a custom application for DAN Services that allows members to purchase trip insurance online anytime and an online directory of oxygen fill stations. DAN IT is committed to its role in helping DAN fulfill its mission of improving dive safety. By keeping abreast of new technologies and making continuous improvements to the organization’s existing infrastructure, DAN will continue to be able to serve its membership and the diving community for years to come.

Service is our business, and to effectively help the more than 219,000 DAN Members who support DAN and the dive industry, the Membership Services division of DAN Services, Inc. consists of two teams: Customers Service Representatives (CSRs) and Data Entry Specialists. The CSRs respond to all member-related phones calls, faxes, emails and mail. Data Entry Specialists process membership requests via mail, fax and email. Data Entry During FY2004, the Data Entry Specialists Team processed 69,730 pieces of entry. The New Member Registration Application on the DAN website has directed a significant number of members to join DAN electronically, hence bypassing the traditional methods for application registration. The Data Entry Specialists Team also devoted a significant amount of time to processing Student Membership applications received from DAN ProMembers and Business Members enrolling their students. This year, data entry processed 41,689 Student Membership applications (a 13% increase over FY2003). Additionally, the data entry staff fulfilled entry for DAN Development, ProMembership and sales from dive shows. Customer Service Representatives Telephone This year CSRs received 43,553 telephone inquiries from the general DAN Membership toll-free line, answered 2,008 calls from the ProMembership toll-free line and 127 calls on the new dedicated DAN Trip Insurance
Information line. The calls involved membership inquiries, product orders, ID card replacement requests, product information clarification and product shipping status and insurance status inquiries. Because of the increase in members utilizing the DAN website, the CSRs also assist DAN Members with questions about the website, online applications and translations. Correspondence Because many of our members utilize the DAN website to conduct business with the organization, there has been an increase in the number of email communications between DAN Members and Membership Services. In FY2004, the department received 10,332 emails from members in addition to 615 faxes and 1,169 letters. In return, CSRs sent out 13,512 emails, 1,011 faxes, 6,938 letters, and made 5,451 callbacks. All full-time Member Services staff are dually licensed Life & Health and Property & Casualty insurance agents in the state of North Carolina and adhere to the continuing education requirements of the N.C. Department of Insurance.

Fiscal Year 2004 represented a year of changes for DAN both promising and challenging. DAN experienced changes in leadership and began embarking on a new strategic plan to continue it’s focus of helping divers. DAN provided more than $2.3 million toward recreational diving research, medical programs, training and education. DAN also continued to maintain tight fiscal control over expenditures and lowered its total annual expenditures by 1 percent despite increases in staff hiring, wage rates and benefits which account for more than 40 percent of DAN’s total expenditures. External economic conditions continued to challenge DAN’s ability to increase revenues, but DAN did experience a 10 percent increase in total revenue compared to fiscal year 2003. While DAN’s Membership dues revenue remained flat for fiscal year 2004, DAN was able to increase product sales by 11 percent, charitable giving by 7 percent and income from DAN’s for-profit subsidiaries nearly doubled
as compared to fiscal year 2003. While these improvements in revenue are noteworthy, DAN’s long-term success relies heavily on the support of its members and member related revenue streams. DAN also succeeded in managing its expenditures including reducing administrative costs by 23 percent compared to fiscal year 2003. Overall, 78 percent of total expenditures went to support DAN programs. Our strategic goals emphasize increasing direct membership support through dues, insurance, and charitable contributions. Through these funding channels, DAN will be equipped to enhance our medical services, expand training and educational programs for divers at all levels and develop new research opportunities. Your commitment to DAN will assure that divers receive the best medical advice and information available. In turn, DAN will continue to maximize the use of its financial resources toward the safety of diving.
