Upgrading Office Communications Server
2007 R2 Evaluation to the Full Released
Version
The topics in this section guide you through the process of upgrading Microsoft Office
Communications Server 2007 R2 Evaluation Edition to the full version of Office Communications
Server 2007 R2. These topics have the following scope and criteria:
 Migration from Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Evaluation Edition is supported only
for the volume editions of Office Communications Server 2007 R2.
 Migration from the Evaluation Edition is supported for the following Office Communications
     Server roles:
      Standard Edition server
      Enterprise pool
      Edge Servers
 Upgrading the following server roles and tools is not required. These server roles and
components do not require a product key for installation and therefore are not subject to the
     evaluation expiry limits:
      Mediation Server
      Archiving Server
      Monitoring Server
      Communicator Web Access
      Group Chat Server

Important:
If you cancel the upgrade while files are being installed, your server will not perform as
     designed.
You must upgrade all servers that are running the Evaluation Edition of the following server roles:
 Enterprise pools, Standard Edition servers, or both
 Directors
 Edge Servers
The recommended upgrade sequence is as follows:
1. Internal servers: Enterprise pool, Standard Edition Server and Directors
2. Edge Servers
If you are upgrading from any Evaluation Edition server role to the full version of the same server
role, you can perform the upgrade in place by running the Windows Installer file Server.msi that
is included with the full version. Server.msi will update your installation and preserve any

                                                                                                     5
configuration data and existing databases on either a Standard Edition or an Enterprise Edition
server.

Note:
To upgrade from the Evaluation Edition to a different edition of the full version, such as
replacing the Enterprise Edition of a Standard Edition server with the full version of an
Enterprise Edition server, you must perform a side-by-side migration and then move your
       users to the new server.

You can also start Server.msi from the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Deployment
Wizard on a computer that already contains the Evaluation Edition.

Upgrading Enterprise Pools and Standard
Edition Servers
The following table summarizes the steps that are required for an in-place migration from the
Evaluation Edition.

Procedure Action

1. Back up the evaluation User Database As a precaution you may want to back up the
(optional). existing evaluation version of then User
                                                   database before upgrading the Evaluation
                                                   Edition pool and server.

1. Upgrade the Evaluation Edition pool or Use the full released version to upgrade the
Server. evaluation version of the pool or server.
The existing evaluation version of the User
                                                   Database and configuration settings are
                                                   preserved.

1. Verify that the full released version of User The full released version of User Replicator
Replicator is complete. must complete its first replication cycle before
the upgraded pool or server can be operational.

For details about each step, see the following topics.
In This Section
 Back Up the Existing Evaluation User Database (Optional)
 Upgrade an Enterprise Pool
 Upgrading Standard Edition Servers
 Verify That Full Released Version Office Communications Server 2007 R2 User Replication
     is Complete

Back Up the Existing Evaluation User Database
(Optional)
Before you begin the upgrade, we recommend that as a best practice you back up the user
database on the Evaluation Edition of your Enterprise pool or Standard Edition server by using
Dbimpexp.exe. By default, Dbimpexp.exe is installed on the server computer at <drive>:

                                                                                                  7
\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2\Support. For
details about using Dbimpexp, see the dbimpexp-readme document in the same folder.

To back up the user database
    1. Log on to the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Standard Edition Server or the
Enterprise pool Back-End Database as a member of the Administrators group.
    2. At a command prompt, set the default folder to <drive>: \Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2\Support folder. At the command
prompt, type one of the following, substituting the path and name of your user data file
and for an Enterprisse pool, the name of your SQL Server host:
 On a Standard Edition Server
             dbimpexp.exe /hrxmlfile:"c:\SavedUserData.xml"
         For an Enterprise pool
             dbimpexp.exe /hrxmlfile:"c:\SavedUserData.xml" /sqlserver:<sql
             server host name>
You can place the XML file anywhere, as long as you specify the full path.

Upgrade an Enterprise Pool
To perform the upgrade, use the full version of Server.msi.

To upgrade the installation of each Enterprise Edition server
    1. Log on to the Enterprise Edition server as a member of the Administrators group.
    2. Start Server.msi by using one of the following two methods:
 Start the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Deployment Wizard. Under
Upgrade from the Evaluation Version, click Install.
 At a command prompt, change the default folder to the installation folder or the
Setup\amd64\setup folder of the installation CD. At the command prompt, type the
following command as described in Overview of the Upgrade Process:
             MsiExec.exe /i Server.msi EVALTOFULL=1 [/l*v
             <Drive:\Directory\FileName.log>] [/q[n|b|r][+]]
             For example:
             MsiExec.exe /i Server.msi EVALTOFULL=1 /l*v C:\Upgrade.log
    3. Follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the upgrade.
    4. Click Finish to exit the wizard.
    5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each Enterprise Edition server in the Enterprise pool.

                                                                                                  8
Upgrading Standard Edition Servers
To perform the upgrade, use the full version of Server.msi.

To upgrade the installation files for each Standard Edition Server
    1. Log on to the evaluation version of Standard Edition server as a member of the
       Administrators group.
    2. Start Server.msi by using one of the following two methods:
 Start the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Deployment Wizard. Under
Upgrade from the Evaluation Version, click Install.
 At a command prompt, change the default folder to the installation folder or the
Setup\amd64\setup folder of the installation CD. At the command prompt, type the
following command as described in Overview of the Upgrade Process:
             MsiExec.exe /i Server.msi EVALTOFULL=1 [/l*v
             <Drive:\Directory\FileName.log>] [/q[n|b|r][+]]
             For example:
             MsiExec.exe /i Server.msi EVALTOFULL=1 /l*v C:\Upgrade.log
    3. Follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the upgrade.
    4. Click Finish to exit the wizard.

Verify That Full Released Version Office
Communications Server 2007 R2 User Replication
is Complete
Before your upgrade is operational and can home and route users, you must verify that the Active
Directory Domain Services have completed the first replication cycle on the full released version
of the pool and server for all the domains that have users enabled. The procedures are different
for Standard Edition servers and Enterprise pools.

To verify that user replication is complete on a Standard Edition server
    1. Open the Event Viewer: Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administration
Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
    2. Click Application Logs, and then click the Source column to sort by source.
    3. Look for Office Communications User Replicator as the source and event ID 30024. The
       event displays the following text:
Check this event for all the domains that have users enabled for Office Communications
        Server.

                                                                                                 9
To verify that user replication is complete on an Enterprise pool
    1. Only one server in the pool is assigned the user replication task. Determine which server
in the pool runs the user replicator: On the Back-End Database Server for the pool, run
the Dbanalyze tool. (This tool is available in the Office Communications Server 2007 R2
Resource Kit.) The syntax is as follows:
        Dbanalyze.exe /report:diag /poolfqdn:<fqdn_of_pool>
In the report that appears, determine which server performs user replication. In the
following example, server03 is assigned the user replication task.
        Task Name Fqdn -----------------
        ------- Endpoint Expiration server01.contoso.com
        Subscription Expiration server02.contoso.com User
        Replication server03.contoso.com Nightly
        Maintenance server04.contoso.com
    2. On the server that is assigned user replication, open the Event Viewer: Click Start, point
to All Programs, point to Administration Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
    3. Click Application Logs, and then click the Source column to sort by source.
    4. Look for Office Communications Server User Replicator as the source and event ID
30024. The event displays the following text:
Check this event for all the domains that have users enabled for Office Communications
        Server.

Upgrading Director
The evaluation version of a Director must also be upgraded. Because a Director is a Standard
Edition Server or an Enterprise pool, but without users homed to it, see Upgrading Enterprise
Pools and Standard Edition Servers to upgrade your Directors.

Upgrading Edge Servers to the Full Released
Version
The evaluation version of Edge Servers must be upgraded along with the internal servers and
Directors. The upgrade involves upgrading the installation files. No reactivation is required for the
Edge Server upgrade. All configuration settings are preserved during this upgrade.
To perform the upgrade, use the full version of Server.msi.

                                                                                                   10
To upgrade the installation files for the Evaluation Edge Server
   1. Log on to the evaluation version of the Edge Server as a member of the Administrators
      group.
   2. Start Server.msi by using one of the following two methods:
 Start the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Deployment Wizard. Under
Upgrade from the Evaluation Version, click Install.
 At a command prompt, change the default folder to the installation folder or the
Setup\amd64\setup folder of the installation CD. At the command prompt, type the
following command as described in Overview of the Upgrade Process:
            MsiExec.exe /i Server.msi EVALTOFULL=1 [/l*v
            <Drive:\Directory\FileName.log>] [/q[n|b|r][+]]
            For example:
            MsiExec.exe /i Server.msi EVALTOFULL=1 /l*v C:\Upgrade.log
   3. Follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the upgrade.
   4. Click Finish to exit the wizard.

                                                                                               11
