                               The Tasmanian Fertiliser Act
    • The regulations require superphosphate to contain at least 8% P available.
    • All manufacturers of SSP aim for 8.6% available P.
    • Under the act this can be rounded up and sold as 9%
    • A tolerance of 0.5% is permitted under the act.
    • So product can have a minimum of 8.1%P and a maximum of 9.1%P
    However,
    • At times due to poor conversion of certain phosphate rocks extra rock has to be added to
achieve an available P of 8.6%, this in turn increases total P.
    • At times total P of Impact SSP may exceed 9.5%.
    • Every extra kg of P costs Impact Fertilisers $2.90/kg of P

The key is not the Total P but the available P
This is the P the growing plant can use

    • For every 1000kg of SSP = 86kg of available P
    • A product with 2.7% moisture at 8.6 % available P will not supply any more P
than a product with 6% moisture at 8.6% available P.
    • Both will supply 86kg of available P per tonne.
    • In a clay/loam soil P moves about 1cm from where the fertiliser granule is applied.
    • In a sandy soil P moves about 2 cm from where fertiliser granule is applied.
    • Only 20% - 40% of the P from each particle or granule is utilised within 12 months of
        application to the soil.

It is desirable to have a range of particle sizes to achieve the best utilisation of applied P.
If TSP with 95% of granules within 2-4mm in size is spread at 100kg/ha you will have very large
gaps between granules leading to hidden P hunger.

If Impact Premier Dried SSP, with 85% of granules within 1-4mm in size is spread you
eliminate the majority of hidden hunger.
If Impact Fertilisers Topdressing grade with a range of less than 1mm to 4mm in size is
spread you eliminate all the hidden hunger patches and, due to far larger number of
granules, you increase the amount of P available across the paddock in the year of
application. Remember only 20-40% from each granule is available in the year of
        application.
                                Cost of Available Phosphorus
Based on recent data from 3 independent laboratories
    • Against a specification of 8.6% in Premier Dry SSP had an average available P of 8.56%
    • Against a specification of 8.6% in Topdressing SSP had an average available
       P of 8.49%.
This equates at available list prices to a cost of Premier Dry SSP with
                             85.6 kg of P @ $264.00 = $3.08 kg/P
This equates at available list prices to a cost of Topdressing SSP with
                             84.9 kg of P @ $249.00 = $2.93 kg/P
