ON THE SAME WAVE Department of Communities International Volunteer Day Symposium Presentation by John Brennan SLSQ Acting CEO ‘On the Same Wave’ • Aims to provide support to young Australians of all backgrounds, particularly young Australians of Middle Eastern background, refugees, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to engage in Surf Life Saving throughout Queensland. • It also aims to increase Surf Life Saving’s openness and responsiveness to cultural diversity and increase diversity within clubs. Diversity • Diversity is about celebrating difference • Inclusion is about including all people • Inclusion is not just about not excluding it is also about thinking of ways to actively include others. Diversity Question: Doesn’t everyone deserve equal treatment in Surf Life Saving? Answer: YES • Surf Life Saving has always welcomed everyone and treated everyone equally. • ‘On the Same Wave’ is about exploring ways that we can ensure everyone knows we are welcoming. Research… • The research clearly indicates that there is a ‘gap’ between the image we believe we have and the image we actually have. • ‘On the Same Wave’ is about closing the gap. • The program will provide the know-how for clubs to make sure people from all communities know about: • Surf safety • The role of Surf Life Saving • All the ways they could be involved. ‘On the Same Wave’ • Isn't everyone equal in Surf Life Saving? • ‘On the Same Wave’ is not about giving people special treatment, its about giving them: – Information about surf awareness – that’s our job – A positive experience at the beach and with Surf Lifesavers – A warm welcome if they want to join including the provision of multilingual information to assist them in becoming volunteers with the Clubs. On the Same Wave – Benefits to SLS… • increased membership = more volunteers • reduced rescues • increase water safety education to users of the surf environment • reaching untapped community groups • reduced drowning • improved relations on the beach with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. • PR – running ‘On the Same Wave’ activities will guarantee you media coverage = promoting participation in community life • Relationship building with local councils and community multicultural associations. • Generates good will for Surf Life Saving and extends our role as an active player in the community. • Promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for children and adults in CALD communities (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) • Employment opportunities as trainers, lifeguards etc from within CALD Communities. On the Same Wave • It’s not special treatment – it’s just a special welcome! THANK YOU QUESTIONS!!
