Principal's Foreword
Introduction
Middlemount Community School is a state school that provides a quality seamless education from prepl to Year
12. Students work in single and composite class structures dependent upon student numbers. Curriculum
delivery in the key learning areas ensures students achieve to their full potential through comprehensive
teaching and learning programs supported by intervention programs developed in conjunction with special
needs, learning support teacher, Guidance Officer and visiting support personnel. Partnerships with the
community and industry are essential for students in the senior phase of learning to develop pathways for future
earning and learning. Strong links with community facilitate student learning opportunities and outcomes
through all phases of learning. Parents are a valuable link in the education process and are encouraged to
participate as partners to support and facilitate learning outcomes for all students.
Future Outlook
Learning - inclusive curriculum practices deliver learning for all students within classroom environments,
intervention processes support curriculum, learning and teaching and enhance student learning outcomes,
curriculum delivery is focused on a seamless transition across the phases of learning
Schools - development of a Responsible Behaviour Plan in partnership with parents, students, staff and
community to ensure clarity and has a whole school focus across Prep to Year 12, facilitation of continuity and
stability in leadership and governance roles within the school to support staff to drive forward a clear purpose,
vision and values, planning and management of curriculum to enable a seamless and continuous education of
students at Middlemount Community School.
Workforce - development of a Workforce plan to enable continuity and stability for staff and students at
Middlemount Community School, provision and support for professional development and learning for all staff to
enable delivery of curriculum, learning and teaching while meeting school and systemic requirements, valuing
and developing a strong sense of teamwork within the staff modelled through strong professional and personal
behaviours and commitment to students.

Curriculum offerings
Our distinctive curriculum offerings and Extra Curricula Activities:
Curriculum is delivered through integrated units of work within the Year 1-7 program. Students in Year 8-10
participate in an elective program selecting two subjects per semester providing them an opportunity to
experience a range of options when selecting subject choices in Year 11-12.
Students in Year 10 undertake Certificate I in Work Education and Information Techonology. Students undertake
work experience in term three within the local and broader community
Year 11-12 students are able to select virtual schooling and distance education modes of delivery in a range of
subjects not offered within our approved subjects. Access day is Wednesday and students are able to study or
participate in traineeships, apprenticeships and work experience.
Students in Year 5 onwards are able to participate in the Instrumental music program. Choir is provided by the
music teacher. Students are also able to participate in eistedfodd on an annual basis.
Parents, in the Opinion Survey, reported a level of satisfaction with the variety of school activities at 55.6%
Students reported their level of satisfaction at 66.7%
How computers are used to assist learning:
Students interact with technology both within and external to classrooms through two special purpose
technology centres. Technology is built into the curriculum through assessment tasks and within subject areas
within the middle and senior schools. Students also have access to technology to participate in Virtual Schooling
and Distance Education subject delivery. A variety of hardware also supports students to facilitate learning within
curriculum areas.
Social climate
A school chaplaincy program operates within the school.The chaplain works jointly as the Youth Worker and is
based at the school four days per week. As a part of the chaplaincy program motivational guest speakers were
identified and students were provided the opportunity to participate in workshops and small group sessions.
The Middlemount Youth Centre opened in 2007. The chaplian also participated in extra curricular activities
supporting students and staff.
Year 10 students also participated in the Virtual Parenting Program and Baby Think It Over!
During the year students participated in Rock and Water programs with trained staff.

Involving parents in their child's education
Parents are encouraged to participate in classroom support for a range of activities. Continuous communication
through fortnightly newsletters and correspondence from teachers is provided. Parents are also encouraged to
participate in sporting and cultural activities.

44.4% of parents expressed satisfaction that their child is getting a good education at school.
Students reported their level of satisfaction at 74%
Parent responses to the Opinion Survey question about this being a good school indicated a level of satisfaction

Value added
Year 2 Net data in all areas - reading, writing and number appears fairly consistent from the previous Year. 2009
data is expected to show some improvement.
Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 NAPLAN testing results have set a benchmark with significant results in some areas such as
Year 5 Writing above the State mean, and Year 9 Numeracy above the State mean.
80% of students that applied to QTAC received an offer of a position at University.

The major professional development initiatives are as follows:
During the year staff participated in Professional Standards for Teachers, QCAR, Assessment and Reporting
Workshops and Year 1-12 teachers participated in Functional Grammar workshops held at the school. Small
groups of staff participated in First Steps in Number and a range of curriculum based workshops.
Staff in the senior school participated in QSA workshops and attended panel meetings and observation sessions.
VET training workshops were attended by staff to ensure compliance with AQTF.
The focus of professional development this year was on meeting systemic requirements for professional
development by EQ and meeting the individual and group requirements of staff.
The involvement of the teaching staff in professional development activities during 2008 was 92.3%
