September 2009 School Opening Newsletter

WELCOME BACK!
The Staff at Stuart Wood Elementary hope that all of you had an enjoyable, relaxing and
rejuvenating summer and that you are ready for an action packed and successful 2009-2010
school year. Welcome Back to all of our students and parents. We extend a special welcome to
students and parents who are new to Stuart Wood as well.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
WOW! Where did the summer go? It was a busy one, but relaxing too. I spent a lot of time at the
Shuswap Lake where my mom has a house, then we went to Sun Peaks and I completed my
summer with a trip to San Francisco with my mom, sister and step sister to celebrate my mom's
60th Birthday. It was a lot of fun. To be honest though, Mark Twain said it perfectly “The coldest
winter I ever spent, was a summer in San Francisco.” It was freezing there!
I am elated to be returning to Stuart Wood again for the second year. It will be great to have the
consistency and understanding of the operations of the school and of course, have the
relationships with staff, students and parents.
Stuart Wood Elementary is truly a group of STARS! I look forward to seeing the academic,
athletic and social growth of all the students again this year.

THE STAFF AT STUART WOOD ELEMENTARY
We have an exceptional staff at Stuart Wood Elementary. Some faces are new and some are
familiar, but our team is wonderful. In the office, you will see two new faces, Mrs. Sandra Comita
and Mrs. Raj Aujla. They are job sharing the Administrative Assistant role. Mrs. Comita works
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs. Aujla works Thursday and Friday.
Mrs. Gail Nelson is our new Learning Assistance and Resource Room teacher and she works
Monday, Wednesday(full days) and Thursday morning.
Mrs. Teresa Lomax comes to us from SKSS. She is a new School Support Worker who will work
with a variety of children around the school.
Mrs. Kim Glendinning had back surgery late in August and will be on leave for 6-8 weeks. The
school board will send a relief SSW until Mrs. Glendinning returns. We also have a TRU
Practicum Student this fall, who will also return in January. Please welcome Mrs. Laelle
Richmond.
Our staff this year is as follows:
Intermediate Teachers: Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Piva and Mrs. Corbet
Primary Teachers: Mrs. Antoniak, Mrs. Lewis, and Mrs. McDaniel
Librarian: Mrs. Robb
Library Assisants: Mrs.Comita and Mrs. Aujla
SSW‟s: Mrs. Curtin, Mrs. Glendinning and Mrs. Lomax
Custodian: Diane Arnott

‘PROPOSED’ CONFIGURATION CLASS LISTS
Enrolment seems consistent to past years at Stuart Wood Elementary. Mrs. Comita and I fielded
calls about registrations all last week. It seems our numbers could alter after the first day of class
depending on the attendance check we do on the first day. We like to see the „whites of eyes‟
before making any final decisions with our class lists. Today your children were placed into a
class based on numbers we had confirmed; however, it is possible our class configurations could
change. Mr. Karl deBruijn, (Assistant Superintendent) will address these needs as the attendance
numbers are sent to him at the end of the week. Please be patient as we try to ensure we have the
best learning environment for all of your children for the duration of the year.

MEALS PROGRAM
Just a reminder that we do not have a Meals Program for the first week of school. Mrs. Shelley
Roerslev is the Meals Contractor at Beattie Elementary. We are so fortunate that again this year
she will be dividing her time and including Stuart Wood in her amazing lunch program.
Her menu with prices and an explanation of the program is also coming home today. Please
consider enrolling your child onto the Meals Program. It is so important that our children have
healthy and nutritional lunches so that they can perform to the best of their ability and have
academic success. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILDREN COME WITH A SNACK and
LUNCH every day.
** MEALS PROGRAM FORMS ARE DUE FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11th with Payment
** MEALS PROGRAM BEGINS MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14th**

DAILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Just a reminder that the Ministry of Education and School District #73 are working hard to
increase the health and well being of every child in our province. Therefore, schools will continue
to implement DAILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. This is different than our usual two blocks of PE
a week. Children will do another 15 minutes of Daily Physical Activity in their day. Staff at
Stuart Wood have a plan and a variety of activities to share with your children. We hope you will
continue DPA on Saturday and Sundays as well with your children. In the agenda book, you will
also see a P.A.L. A Personal Activity Log will be used to show that each child at Stuart Wood is
participating to the best of their ability in being more active than ever before. Please ensure your
child has proper footwear at school every day and a water bottle would be a wonderful idea.

NUT AWARE
Please be aware that Stuart Wood Elementary is a NUT CONSCIENCE SCHOOL and we are
VERY AWARE of the medical detriment a nut allergy poses for individuals in our school. We
ask that parents be sensitive to the severity of the allergies of others. Please refrain from sending
peanut butter, nuts (peanuts, walnuts, pecans) of any sort or products with nuts in them when
possible to our school.
WEBSITE AT STUART WOOD ELEMENTARY
THE STUART WOOD WEBSITE is http://stuart-wood.sd73.bc.ca/
It is a wonderful asset to parents to view ALL information about our school. From the Board of
Education Minutes, to PAC news, to specific events, it will be a great way to stay informed as a
parent.

S.T.A.R.S CODE OF CONDUCT MATRIX
At Stuart Wood, staff and students continue to SHINE in all that they do. In keeping ourselves
aligned with District Policy to have a CODE OF CONDUCT, Stuart Wood has its own acronym
for positive behaviour: STAR
At Stuart Wood Elementary we are a:
SAFE, TOLERANT, ACCOUNTABLE and RESPECTFUL SCHOOL.
We want the children at Stuart Wood to think about what kind of person they want to be.
We want children at Stuart Wood to know that we are all human and we all make mistakes, but
we need a PLAN to fix our mistakes. Just saying „sorry‟ isn‟t fixing the problem. The staff will
be working on teaching and implementing the STARS acronym to the children in the coming
weeks to remind them about the 'rules' at school.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES
We encourage parents to purchase your childrens‟ school supplies through the school. This allows
the classroom teacher to ensure your child has the same supplies as the class and she can
distribute when necessary. Many teachers like to color code their supplies, number them in
advance with a student number and use certain notebooks purchased specifically for a learning
outcome (i.e. interlined pages for journals, half and half books for emergent writers). With art
supplies and a student agenda included in the cost, the district‟s fees are fair and a bargain
considering it is a fee for the year.
SCHOOL SUPPLY FEES FOR 2009-2010
Kindergarten: $16.00
Mrs. Lewis' Class: $25.00 (no agenda)
Mrs. Antoniak's Class: $32.00 ( agenda used)
Grades 4-7: $ 47.00 (includes the Agenda)
f you still prefer to purchase all your own supplies please note that parents will need to pay the
school an ART supply fee of $10.00 and also pay for the Premier School Agenda which is $7.00.
Please see your child‟s classroom teacher for an individualized purchase list.
A form will be coming home to return with payment and we would ask that all fees are paid by
September 21st. Please see us in the office if you need a payment plan option.

YOUNG PEOPLES CONCERT and PRIMARILY MUSIC
Our students have the opportunity to participate in the Young People‟s Concert(Intermediates)
and Primarily Music(Primary Students) Series again this year. The children are bussed to the
Sagebrush Theatre. The cost is $15 for the concerts. It is a wonderful way for students to be more
educated about the Fine Arts. Forms will be coming home with your children later this week. The
forms will include more specific information and dates.

SCHOOL GOALS FOR 2009-2010

Stuart Wood has three goals for our three year School Improvement Plan that was approved by
the Board Of Education. These goals were generated and ratified by the school staff and our
SCHOOL PLANNING COUNCIL (SPC). The SPC review data on student academic progress
(letter grades, test scores, etc) as well as data on attendance, student attitudes, and satisfaction
surveys in order to generate our school goals. Teachers will spend time in their classrooms using
best practice in both teaching and learning and assessment practices in order to better assist our
students in these three goal areas.
Stuart Wood Elementary School Planning Council is in need of three parents to sit on this
committee with the principal to assist in planning and ratify decisions. If you are interested in the
academic goals of our school, please see Mrs. Robb about being a parent representative.
GOAL #1
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY/HEALTHY LIVING
Students will learn to make informed choices for their emotional/social and physical health.
GOAL # 2
WRITING
Students will be able to present ideas clearly with a logical, well organized flow using correct conventions
and form.
GOAL # 3
MATH
Students will improve their math skills at all grade levels, with an emphasis on basic number operations.
For the 2009-2010 School Year, your students and their teachers will be focused on the WRITING GOAL.
Many interventions, activities and supports will be planned to assist our learners with their quest to be
improved and proficient writers.

PAC NEWS
With many new families to Stuart Wood please consider becoming part of our Parent Advisory
Council. Elections for positions will be held later in the month if you have a keen desire to be
active in our school. ALL parents at STUART WOOD ELEMENTARY belong to the PAC and
are welcome to attend one or all of the meetings. Please try to attend our first PAC Meeting
Friday September 18th at 8:35 in the STAFFROOM. See you then!
SYNRE VOICE CALL OUT SYSTEM: NEW TO STUART WOOD

Most likely, many of you heard my voice on a call out I did on Friday September 4th. This is a
new system I am implementing at Stuart Wood. I am able to call every household in our school in
about ten seconds by using a system called School Connects. It will be great for reminding
parents about school events, overdue fees for school supplies and most importantly, school
emergencies. I can also cascade call, which means, I will call your cell phone numbers, grandma's
and grandpa's until the system gets a hold of contact for your child. Please ensure that when the
VERIFICATION forms come home in the coming weeks you have provided the school with
ACCURATE phone numbers where you can be reached. Also, it is MANDATORY that the
school has EMERGENCY contact numbers so that your child can be picked up in the event of
illness or emergency. Sometimes you will hear my voice, and other times you may hear a
computer generated voice, but not too worry... it is someone from Stuart Wood Elementary.

SAFE ARRIVAL:

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CALL THE SCHOOL AT 250 374 1755 IF YOUR
CHILD IS GOING TO BE ABSENT or LATE. OUR ADMINISTRATIVE
ASSITANTS CHECK THE ATTENDANCE AND WE BELIEVE IN THE
SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM. Please help us out by leaving a message on the
answering machine if your child is going to be LATE or ABSENT. If no
contact has been made with the school, we will be calling your home in order
to ensure your child made it to our school safely by 8:30.

H1N1 VIRUS

Just to let parents know SD#73 is taking the necessary steps to ensure we are vigilant about the
health of your child. Hand washing and proper sneezing and coughing strategies will be stressed
in your child's classroom. The district has created a Pandemic Response Plan and all Emergency
Procedures Manuals have been updated. Please ensure the school has multiple emergency contact
numbers in case your child is sick. Children who are ill must be sent home and if your child is
extremely ill please do not send he/she to our school. A formal letter about H1N1 will be coming
home with your child in the near future. For the most up to date information please go to the
school district website at www.sd73.bc.ca

SCHOOL DISTRICT FACILITY RECONFIGURATION

As you are all aware, Stuart Wood will be affected by the District's plan to reconfigure our
schools in SD#73. We do not know at this time what that will encompass, but please take note of
the scheduled Public Meeting that each of you is invited to attend in January at the Henry Grube.
For this school year, we are excited to educate your children and will maximize the 2009-2010
school year.
