Lake Washington High School Cross Country Parents & New Runners Welcome to the Lake Washington High School Cross Country Team. On this page, you can find out basic information on our summer program, team camps, parent involvement, and other activities. For any other questions, contact: Coach Johnson: email@example.com Coach Hanson: firstname.lastname@example.org Coach Jacobs: email@example.com Website: http://www.kangtrack.org/ Team News and Information is posted on the website Summer Training: Lake Washington runners meet as a team for training runs on Monday - Friday at Lake Washington High School from June through July. During school (through June 25th), runs are after school. Runs are at 8:00 AM (M, W, F) and swimming (?) 3:00 PM (Tu, Th) during summer vacation. Many team members get together for runs on other days as well. In August, team captains organize training runs. Athletes who take part in the summer training program or maintain consistent running and a training log are invited to go on our overnight invitational trip September 29th. Parent Volunteers for these trips are needed. Please e-mail coach Hanson if you are able to chaperon one of our trips. All eligible runners will be invited to compete at the Salt Creek Invitational September 15th. Summer Camps: The Falcon Running Camp in late July has spots left for our team; please send in your deposit as soon as possible to guarantee a spot (by June 7th if possible). This is a great opportunity for the team. The program includes two formal training sessions each day. The morning run is a special time of camaraderie. The afternoon session focuses on technique and racing strategy. Each of the daily teaching and discussion sessions addresses such topics as: mental preparation, injury prevention, nutrition, strength and flexibility training, motivation, cross-training and race preparation. The cost is $360.00 for 6 days, 5 nights (remember to subtract your food and energy savings when considering this cost). The Lake Washington Cross Country Booster Club has some partial scholarships available. See Coach Hanson for more information. Another opportunity to take advantage of on Fridays from July 20th through August 10th will be to join the Seattle Running Company trail running. These runs will last from 9 am until 1 pm, cost $25 per person per day and include energy food and transportation to some of the best running routes in Washington. Team Camp: Lake Washington runners will go on a team overnight camping trip on August 25-26. Cost will be $35.00 for food, transportation and camping fees. More information will follow. Team Activities: We have a full moon run on July 30th at LWHS. This is a one hour run around the track, starting at 8:30 PM to be run at your own pace. A team run at Tiger Mountain during the second week of training, and trips to different locations to run during June and July. Our parent barbecue will be held in the evening August 28th. Please let Coach Johnson know if you would be willing to host this event. Anne Fogarty will also organize several fund raisers this year as her senior project. Her goal is to raise enough funds to fly the team to a race this year! Who can compete: Lake Washington Cross-Country is a "no cut" sport open to everyone. All eligible runners will run in all regular season meets and at least two invitational meets. Runners who help with fund raisers and take part in summer training are also eligible for our overnight invitational as well. Eligibility: Athletes must have a current physical (good for two years), copy of their medical insurance, A.S.B. card, and all paperwork filled out prior to the first day of practice. Packets can be picked up at the student accounts office. Equipment: Please see the team handbook for detailed information (coming soon). Most important are good running shoes. Everyday Athlete (Juanita Bay) and Footzone Running (Bellevue/Redmond) are excellent sources of information about running shoes and offer all LW high school cross country runners 10% off their shoes. There are several good running stores in Seattle as well including Super Jock 'n Jill, Road Runner Sports, and The Seattle Running Company which offer excellent service and selection. Also, a running watch is advised. These can be picked up anywhere. Parent Support: The Lake Washington team has a tradition of outstanding parent support. Our parents are largely responsible for the running of the Lake Washington Track and Field Invitational (Over 70 teams) in the spring, and our two “home” cross country meets in the fall at Grasslawn Park, as well as providing chaperons for our overnight trips. Fund Raisers: Our major fundraiser for both Cross Country and Track and Field is the Lake Washington Invitational in late April. Other fund raisers will be announced when schedule. All funds are deposited in the LW Track Booster account. Booster Club: Lake Washington Cross Country also has our own booster club. They raise funds for the team and provide grants for cross country camps, and a variety of other activities. They have really been a great source of support for the team. The booster club is always looking for new members. To find out more information, contact Coach Hanson or Coach Johnson.
