Presidents’ Message
Janice Bilchik & Roey Margulies ext. 103
Psychiatric Habilitation Center identified a critical need for group housing in our community and advocated to make it a reality. SCHIP, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, is an ongoing legislative act that provides health insurance to children of low-income families. We have been involved at the national and state level, advocating for the renewal of this act with an increase in both available funding and income level of the families eligible to enroll their children in this program. We are currently working on collaborating with the Department of Employment and Family Services to ensure that all families eligible for this vital insurance are enrolled. NCJW, Inc. (our national organization) has recently announced our newest collaborative initiative to build bridges between community partners and within our own organization of advocacy, community service and program/education. Plan A: NCJW’s CAMPAIGN FOR CONTRACEPTIVE ACCESS, educates and empowers individuals to advocate for women’s universal access to contraceptive information and health service.Through a combination of education and advocacy initiatives at the community, state and national levels, Plan A aims to secure and protect access to contraceptive information and health services for all, putting individuals back in control of their personal health decisions. Many people do not realize that individual pharmacists, physicians and hospitals can refuse to dispense prescriptions for contraceptives based on their own personal beliefs even though 93% of Americans believe in contraception. As a first step, we will be collaborating with Planned Parenthood and other like-minded organizations in a community assessment to determine the status of our own community. We hope that you will all join us in this extremely important initiative. Everyone can and should speak up by signing up at www.ncjw.org to become an informed advocate for women’s reproductive health access. We are extremely proud of all the bridges that NCJW, Cleveland Section has built and will continue to build. Please join us in our efforts. To volunteer for Plan A, SCHIP, our 22 community service projects, education and advocacy efforts or any other facet of Cleveland Section, please contact Leslye Arian, our Director of Volunteers. With our “Strength in Numbers,” we can join together to make our community a better place in which to live.

Sir Isaac Newton once said, “We build too many walls and not enough bridges.” NCJW, Cleveland Section can be very proud that this quote does not hold true for us. For over 113 years, NCJW has been a powerful force for social change by building bridges to improve the quality of life for women, children and families in the Greater Cleveland community. We have built bridges through our many collaborative efforts with community partners and within our own organization between community service and advocacy. Every community service project that we embark upon has an advocacy link. By building bridges between community service and advocacy, NCJW has become a powerful force for social change within the Jewish and general communities, locally, nationally and internationally. “Building Bridges to Peace-Ishmael & Isaac,” our annual Lois Zaas Memorial Advocacy Lecture, will focus on the relationship between the Jewish and Arab communities of Cleveland. It will address what we, both as an organization and as individuals, can do to improve relations between the two both in Cleveland and the Middle East. This program is a collaborative effort of Ishmael & Isaac, Trinity Cathedral and NCJW. Judi Wolf, NCJW’s State Public Affairs Chairperson, recently received the Carolyn Grossman Award from the Heights Parents Center in recognition of her commitment to the growth and success of children and families. Judi created “Play It Safe,” an advocacy event that promotes non-violent play and toys in conjunction with the Heights Parents Center. On the other side of the bridge with community service, Judi also created our “I Will Ask” Gun Safety Program, a presentation that alerts parents to the danger of having guns in the home and gives advice on creating safe play spaces. On this same topic, the community services program/education and advocacy departments recently jointly co-sponsored “Where Did The Gun Come From?” This community forum shifted the attention from people who use illegal handguns to people who sell them, getting to the root of the problem. Lois Bruck, former vice-president of community service and honorary director, received the prestigious Hannah G. Solomon Award at our opening major meeting for her efforts towards the establishment of Council House in collaboration with Jewish Family Service Association 30 years ago. Council House, a group home for severely and chronically mentally ill male Jewish clients of JFSA, was the first group home of this nature in the country. Please join us Tuesday, November 13, 2007 for the Fourth Annual Lois Zaas Memorial Advocacy Lecture, 7:00 p.m. at Trinity Cathedral, 2230 Euclid Avenue as we present Anita Gray and Samir Mohammad, co-founders of the organization Ishmael & Isaac. The forum is free to the community. Founded in 2003, Ishmael & Isaac has chapters in Cleveland, Detroit and New York. Anita Gray and Samir Mohammad will speak about the inception of the organization, its statement of purpose, and its mission. Ishmael & Isaac has had successes and challenges and, above all, has grown in providing mutual support and understanding between communities. This is no easy task. In Cleveland, the Jewish and Arab populations each number approximately 80,000. Of the Arab population, 20,000 are Palestinians, including both Christians and Muslims. Come be part of the discussion as we find ways to promote shared values and create possible solutions to the present-day volatile situation. Our willingness to be involved in important small steps of cooperation is crucial. Anita Gray is a consultant in fundraising, political and community relations, and has been the Cleveland Director for the Jewish National Fund and AIPAC. She is the National President and co-founder of Ishmael & Isaac. Anita has long been involved with the local, national and international Jewish community as well as the general community. Samir Mohammad is Chief Deputy/Chief of Staff at the Cuyahoga County Auditor’s Office. He is National Co-Chair of Ishmael & Isaac and a co-founder and board member of Cleveland’s chapter. Samir is an active board member of AACCESSS-OHIO, CAAMEO, and El-Bireh Palestinian Association. He is also an Executive Committee Member of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party and an alumnus of CSU’s College of Urban Studies. Join us the evening of November 13, 2007 for this free community event. Anita Gray and Samir Mohammad definitely will provide a stimulaon ting opportunity to hear about good people doing good things despite very difficult situations. To gain a conceptual background for the event, Ishmael & Isaac suggests reading the book “Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths” by Bruce Feiler. Reservations are requested by Friday, November 2 by phone (216-378-2204) or by email: mnorton@ncjwcleveland.org Include your name, phone number and if transportation is needed. In Memory of Lois Zaas
In honor of the memory of Lois Zaas and her love of NCJW, especially our advocacy efforts, her husband Don and family have graciously funded the Annual Lois Zaas Memorial Lecture. While achieving an endless list of awards and honors, Lois remained a humble, quiet and steadfast champion of children and seniors in Cleveland and in Israel. For almost 50 years, Lois was an unstintingly generous and loyal Cleveland Section Life Member. Her loyalty was most evident in 1977 when, without hesitation, Lois assumed the responsibility of President upon the sudden death of then President-elect Phyllis Brook. In 1983, Lois began a 13-year period as a NCJW National Board Member where she served as the National Recording Secretary, on the National Israel Affairs Committee and as the national trainer for Hello Israel. Nan Rich, past National President and now Florida State Legislator, remembers Lois as “the progressive woman Hannah G. Solomon had in mind when she founded NCJW in 1894.” No matter how busy or complicated her schedule (Lois traveled to Israel for NCJW at least 15 times), she always had time and attention for Cleveland Section. Lois was a devoted mentor, a great NCJW friend and a woman of vision. Those who were fortunate to know Lois Zaas will always miss her.

Advocacy
Vice President Judy Eigenfeld ext. 172
NCJW,CS members continually expend great amounts of energy on becoming informed, taking action and giving voice to changing public policy on behalf of those most vulnerable in our society. So in this Bulletin, note the many collaborations between the Community Service, Program/Education and Advocacy departments of Cleveland Section. Look for how to become a SCHIP volunteer (see box on page 5). If the October 2 program--Where Did The Gun Come From?—raised your awareness regarding gun safety, join us as we take action. We will work to influence legislation that deals with illegal gun trafficking, and we will be calling on you for help. Our big, new initiative is easy, yet compelling. Read and learn about NCJW Addresses Issues through our new writing campaign. Contact Rita Rome or Leslye Arian to learn how to participate. I look forward to seeing you at the fourth annual Lois Zaas Memorial Advocacy Lecture on Tuesday, November 13, 2007.
ADDRESSING THE ISSUES...Or Sit Down, Write, and Be Counted
How many times have you signed a petition and wondered if your voice was really heard? Or clicked your mouse and figured it was lost in a sea of e-mails? Join us as we get together to help one another with talking points. Then we will compose and send individual letters that will be counted towards making a difference. We will send them to our representatives, to corporations, to others in charge in order to make our voices heard when change in public policy will benefit those most vulnerable. We will cover contraceptive availability; reproductive rights; strengthening hate crime legislation; discrimination of race, religion, and sexual preference; separation of church and state; and the well-being of women, children and families. Bring your pens, your pencils, or your laptops. Gather your stationery or your computer paper. Add your name to our e-mail list, and we will contact you for our writing sessions. Where? In public. We will gather in coffee shops wearing our new t-shirts that advertise our advocacy campaign: NCJW ADDRESSES THE ISSUES. How often? Just come when you can. We may meet every other week, but we will let you know. Our first two sessions will be: Wednesday, October 17, 10:00 a.m. at Stone Oven Bakery, Eton Collection and Tuesday, October 30, 1:00 p.m. at Bruegger’s Bagels at The Pavillion, Chagrin Boulevard, Beachwood. We would love to see you there. Questions? Call Rita Rome at 216-896-9906 or e-mail Leslye Arian at: larian@ncjwcleveland.org If you are interested in having your voice heard, please add your name to our email list for writing and/or for receiving Action Alerts from National NCJW. Please return this slip to the NCJW office.
ABORTION IN A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT
This year is the 35th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision. Over the years, it is becoming more and more difficult for women to obtain appropriate and safe reproductive freedom whether through contraception, emergency medication, or abortion. NCJW is staunchly pro-choice; this is one of our most important advocacy platforms. The Freedom of Choice Coalition Cleveland is sponsoring its annual observance of the Roe vs. Wade decision on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Fairmount Temple. The evening will begin with a reception at 6:30, followed by the program at 7:00. The speakers will include Louise Melling, ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project Director (from their National Office); Jamie Miracle (Education Director from the Columbus office of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio); and the medical director of a local abortion clinic. NCJW is an active member of this coalition. Put this date on your calendar and plan to attend. The charge for the evening is $15 for general admission and $35 for supporters. Please mail your check to FOCC, P.O. Box 443, Berea, OH 44017-9998. Reservations are required and must be received by January 18. Please call the NCJW office at 216-378-2204 if you plan to attend.

As Thanksgiving brings families together to share common blessings, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our Vice Presidents of Community Service, Susie Gordon and Maude Shafron; Chairperson Susan Ringel; the Program Survey Committee; and the Board, for one of NCJW’s newest community service projects: Done In A Day. This organization has recognized that an active lifestyle is a foundation for volunteering and that time is everyone’s most limited commodity. NCJW, Cleveland Section has the capacity and receptivity for increased volunteerism. For these reasons, the intense, short term projects of Done In A Day will have a huge impact on those in need, strengthen our relationships with our affiliates: JFSA, JCC, Montefiore, Jewish Community Federation and Council Gardens. It will link our community service projects together and provide new and meaningful ways for our NCJW family to feel the power of the mission of this organization. Rabbi and author Harold Kushner has said, “When you carry out acts of kindness you get a wonderful feeling inside. It is as though something inside your body responds and says, ‘yes, this is how I ought to feel.’” I truly believe that idealism and hope inspire and lead us to action.
Volun-CHEER!
Marcy Cowan, Bea Immerman, and Shirley Shatten are three NCJW members who have turned their hobbies into acts of kindness. Marcy loves garage sales and that is where she has found hundreds of stuffed animals for the foster children of Cuyahoga County. Often, Marcy has found that when she is shopping, the seller donates the stuffed animals to her because she wants them for such a worthy cause. This makes her project a real community effort. Women and children at New Life Community, a transitional housing facility, are the beneficiaries of Bea’s favorite hobby. Bea has made beautiful handcrafted quilts and donated many of her creations to New Life. The children are certainly lucky to be wrapped in such love. For Shirley Shatten, bridging service organizations to support a common goal is what she had in mind. With the help of the ABC Village Quilters, Shirley and the ladies work with fourth and fifth grade students at Center School to design beautiful original quilts. In addition, Shirley introduced the Mayfield Women’s Club to the Dignity Project and came up with a great idea. For the past two summers, boxes and boxes of new school supplies were donated to families in need. Shirley made a difference for many schoolchildren with her act of kindness. Marcy, Bea and Shirley are wonderful examples of how each person can help change the world. If you have a special hobby or interest that could help touch the lives of others, please call Leslye Arian, 216-378-2204, ext. 107.
NCJW,CS is partnering with the Department of Employment and Family Services to help enroll eligible families in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP or “Healthy Start” as the county calls it). By reaching out through the various schools, we hope to increase the number of registered children for this program. If you are interested in being a volunteer for this NCJW initiative, Please call Leslye Arian at 216-278-2204, ext. 107 or email her at larian@ncjwcleveland.org

Evening Branch
The Evening Branch continues to be busy welcoming new members, learning and playing mahj, discussing interesting books, and attending events. We started the new year with an outdoor get-together at Michele Kaminsky’s house where members had the opportunity to see other members and their families, greet new members, and perform a mitzvah as well. The children created beautiful fall leaf sun catchers that were given to Montefiore residents to hang on their windows and brighten their rooms. When Sukkot came, we gathered at the home of Lori Riga Saks to enjoy food and friends in her sukkah. Thanks to our programming co-chairs, Karen Mintz and Amy Zlotnik, we also participated in a creative eco-friendly gift exchange where everyone had the opportunity to receive a new “green” product they could enjoy. In addition, Judy Eigenfeld, Cleveland Section’s advocacy vice president, also informed us about NCJW’s crucial advocacy agenda and shared the many

ways we could get involved. Looking ahead, November will usher in a new Evening Branch program. New board member Arielle Cohen has organized a movie night for Monday, November 5. Members can enjoy a girls’ night out at the movies followed by dessert and discussion. On Sunday, November 11 from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Evening Branch will continue it’s tradition of performing mitzvot for the children and families served by Bellefaire/ JCB. We will gather again with our families at my house to spread holiday cheer by wrapping gifts for their needy clients. Community Service co-chairs Jodi Speigel and Julie Hayes also have promised fun craft projects for the kids. On Thursday, December 13, we will hold our annual Chanukah party. We are still working on the plans, so keep your eyes open for details to come. In January our membership chairs will treat us to an event designed to improve our health in 2008. Watch for those details to come, as well. As always, I hope you will take advantage of the many fun and educational section events listed in the Bulletin. There is no excuse for the winter blues when there are so many fun and interesting things to do at NCJW! So get involved now!

We Remember... BERNICE “BEE” EISENBERG
Bee Eisenberg, our beloved past president and winner of our prestigious Hannah G. Solomon Award, passed away on July 31 at the age of 88. Bee’s daughters, Nan and Susan, describe their mother as a person who was dedicated to the welfare of children and their families. After completing her term as president of Cleveland Section, Bee became an administrator for the division of early childhood in the Cleveland Municipal School District. In this position, she was responsible for developing many volunteer programs. After her retirement from the schools, Bee returned to NCJW, Cleveland Section and was the co-chairperson of the Holocaust Archives Project. The video testimonials developed through this project are housed at the U.S. Holocaust Museum and a documentary based on them--“A Time to Remember”-- was produced and shown on WEWS/Channel 5. Bee also was actively involved at the JCC, RSVP and Jewish Vocational Services. The Hannah G. Solomon Award is presented to an “individual who brightens a community by service, leadership, and continued action toward improving the quality of life for women, children and families, the aged, and disadvantaged.” These are the words by which Bee lived her life. For those of you who are 70 ½ years and older, there is a new law which allows you to make tax-free distributions in 2007 of up to $100,000 per year directly from your IRA to public charities such as National Council of Jewish Women, Cleveland Section. 2007 ESTEEMED SERVICE AWARD
Ethel Schultz will be the 2007 recipient of the prestigious NCJW/CS Esteemed Service Award, presented annually to an outstanding non-direct service volunteer. She will receive the award at the fourth annual Lois Zaas Memorial Lecture on November 13, 2007. A member of NCJW for twenty years, Ethel has served on various committees and has been on the Board of Directors for eight years. As Vice President of Public Relations, Ethel has been responsible for all of NCJW’s publicity for the last three years, working with the press and taking pictures of NCJW members and events. She has helped NCJW become much more visible in the community. Currently, she serves on the Fundraising, Membership and Financial Development committees. Ethel’s accomplishments are many. She served as district president for Women of Reform Judaism and as National President for six years. In addition, she has been very active at Temple Emanu El, serving on the Board of Trustees at the present time and for the last twenty years. In 1991, along with her husband Elliott, she received the Emanu-lite of the Year Award. She currently is chair of adult education and co-chair of volunteers. In speaking with Ethel, she expressed her love for NCJW and the fact that there is a place for everyone. In her volunteer roles at Temple Emanu El, she worked closely with Lois Zaas who told her, “NCJW teaches you how to treat volunteers.” Ethel is also active in the Cleveland Opera League, currently serving her ninth year on its Board of Governors. Ethel and Elliott have two children and five grandchildren whom they love to visit in Cincinnati and New Jersey. NCJW is very fortunate to have such a dedicated volunteer in our midst! And remember—if you should see Ethel make sure you smile. She may be taking your picture!

New Life Community
VPs Susan Gordon and Maude Shafron Our Unsung Heroes: Volunteering Keeps Them Young
ext.173
We will be preparing an apartment for a new family to move into New Life Community, a short-term transitional housing program. New Life Community teaches and empowers persons in homeless and/or jobless families to become independent, financially stable, and live in permanent housing. We will generate much positive energy as we “set up house” (with light housekeeping and good organization) for a new family to start a new life. This project will be held Tuesday, October 23 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. There is an optional opportunity to bring an item for the apartment, such as a cleaning supply. We will provide a “wish list” to volunteers. New Life is located in Cleveland just past the Shaker Heights border.
Shabbat Services at Montefiore
Bring joy and warmth to Montefiore residents as we help them celebrate Shabbat on Friday, November 9 and/or Friday, December 7.Volunteers are greatly needed and appreciated. We will arrive at 4:00 p.m. to help transport residents from their rooms to the chapel. We will be part of the congregation for the Shabbat service, led by Rabbi Joel Chazin, from 4:30-5:15. After the service, we will go to the different dining rooms to lead the residents in the Shabbat blessings. We will be finished by 6:00 p.m. Please join us for this wonderful mitzvah that truly reaches the “J” in “NCJW.” Feel free to come for one or both dates.

For Corrine Coen and Faye Kaplan, life is always more fun when they are volunteering at Jewish Day Nursery. Although both of these dynamic women are over 80 years old, they faithfully go to JDN one morning a week…and this is not a passing fancy. Corrine began volunteering at Jewish Day Nursery when her youngest child began kindergarten 40 years ago. In fact, Corrine has been there longer than any teacher or administrative staff person! Although she has seen many changes take place at the school, including many new children and teachers, she says that it is always exciting, and she is very grateful to be a part of this wonderful learning environment. In the past, Corrine used to be active in her temple’s sisterhood and was a member of the Mother’s Singers at Belvoir School. Corrine has two children and two grandchildren. Faye’s first volunteer experience was at Jewish Day Nursery and she has continued this loyal service for 30 years. She says that she gets a “lift from the little ones” and hopes to continue volunteering for as long as possible. Faye has donated countless hours, as well as provided funds that help the programs at JDN. Her funds also help provide scholarships for students who otherwise would be unable t o attend. She loves being with children and has found a perfect match at JDN. Faye has three children and one step- daughter, i n addition to eight grandchildren. Consistency is so important in the lives o f young children, and these two special volunteers embody this philosophy with their commitment and dedication. NCJW,CS salutes Corrine Coen and Faye Kaplan, not only for their warmth and enthusiasm, but for demonstrating that volunteering has no age limit. Jewish Day Nursery and NCJW shine brighter because of these two lovely, “young” women. Congratulations, Faye and Corrine.
