The school building will be ready in September 2008. The building will be four floors tall with capacity for 1100 students, although the Academy will have only 360 students in September 2008. Therefore, there will be space to spare for a year or two, and the Academy is making the empty space available for community groups to use. They are also thinking about setting aside some rooms on a permanent basis to act as a "community hotdesk". It might be that the Academy could provide some basic admin support. Oasis Academy has not decided yet what the charge will be, but it is likely that they will provide a substantial discount for those groups who could demonstrably make a contribution to school life. This might involve providing volunteering opportunities to the Academy’s students, meeting parental needs, making a curriculum input or providing a translation service. Ideally, Oasis Academy would like to have a situation where some groups have a permanent presence inside the school in return for this investment in community needs. Some groups will be looking for a simpler arrangement - simply hiring a classroom or a meeting space. The Academy is very happy to do that as well, although hire charges have not yet been determined. Oasis Academy Enfield is currently housed in temporary accommodation but the building is apparently up to a high specification and suitable for letting to a supplementary school or for meetings. Paul Hammond (Deputy Principal, Community, Oasis Academy Enfield) is arranging a meeting on Tuesday 8th January 2008 from 4.00pm to 5.00pm, when interested parties can view the current temporary school and get a good view of the new building in advanced construction. Disability Report Available on the Enfield Observatory The Disability Report has now been published on the Enfield Observatory. It can be downloaded by clicking here. You will find the Key Findings on page 4 of the document. The Report describes a range of characteristics for disabled people living in Enfield, principally by estimating the number of people living with certain conditions and by showing the scale of services provided. Indices of Deprivation The Department for Communities and Local Government released these new deprivation indicators on 6 December 2007. The indicators use data for 2005 and can be compared with the previous 2004 indices which used data for 2001. The Indices provide what may be viewed as league tables for deprivation by local authority district and for small areas within each district. Enfield’s position, relative to other local authorities, worsened between 2001 and 2005, from 104th to 74th worst, out of the 354 authorities in England. Amongst the Indices is an Index of Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) – put simply, child poverty. This also shows a worsening, from 39th to 21st worst, on a simple calculation done by averaging all the small area rankings. The Enfield Observatory team will be producing a fuller information briefing and will be researching changes since 2005. For further information please e-mail Observatory@enfield.gov.uk or telephone 020 8379 3883/5617. You can access the Indices of Deprivation by clicking here. Through fieldwork the study will assess the ways in which local authorities and their partners co-ordinate, deliver and commission positive activities to reduce anti-social behaviour, and will also, crucially, talk to the young people involved in those activities about their experiences. For more information, please visit the Audit Commission website. TellUs2 Survey – Results for Enfield TellUs2 is a survey of children and young people in England carried out in 2007, which asks about their experiences and views of life, their school and their local area. Included were questions covering the five Every Child Matters outcomes. The questions in the survey were put to a number of Year 6, 8 and 10 pupils in Enfield schools during May and June 2007.
