Report of the Celebration of World Migratory Bird Day In Indonesia
1. Shorebird Surveys and Training in Indonesia, 25 April – 01 May 2006. As we didn‟t have enough time to organise an event for the days allocated for WMBD, it was decided to include this as part of the Sumatra Migratory Shorebird Skills Training course at the coast of Cemara, ambi Province. Villagers were invited to talks during the course and a presentation was made of a bird field guide for the region as well as other items, including a WMBD poster to highlight the importance of the area for migratory shorebirds. The participants of the training included 14 people representatives from the Department of Forestry in Jambi and South Sumatra Provinces, universities in South Sumatra, Riau, Lampung and West Sumatra Provinces, members of birdwatching clubs in North Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung Provinces, member of „Friend of Indonesian Birds‟ and two representative of local villagers. The trainers were from Australasian Wader Studies Group (AWSG) and Wetlands International – Indonesia Programme. 2. A lecture at Sriwijaya University, Palembang – South Sumatra, 01 May 2006. As part of the awareness campaign, including the introduction on WMBD, a lecture has been given to students of Sriwijaya University attended by no less than 70 students and lecturers. Phil Straw of AWSG, and Yus Rusila Noor, Irwansyah Reza Lubis and Ferry Hasudungan of Wetlands International – Indonesia Programme provided general lecture on Migratory Shorebirds and the important of Indonesia‟s wetlands to support the survival of the migratory shorebirds. At the end of programme, a special introduction was made on the WMBD event, including presentation of WMBD poster to the Faculty members. 3. Public Seminar on Avian Influenza & Waterbird Race, Surabaya – East Java, 26 – 28 May 2006. On the invitation from Surabaya Technology Institute (ITS), Ferry Hasudungan of Wetlands International – Indonesia Programme provided a presentation on the Migratory Shorebirds in Indonesia in relation to the Avian Influenza outbreak. An introduction to WMBD was made during the presentation. 4. Promotion through bird networks in Indonesia 5. Pubication. The event has been introduced on “Wetlands Conservation Magazine (WKLB)” of Wetlands International – Indonesia Programme, and will be appear on the next issue of “Tattler” (Newsletter for the Asia Pacific Flyways) Noor, Yus Rusila. 2006.
