                      AGEING WELL, AGEING PRODUCTIVELY

                      CALL FOR STAKEHOLDER SUBMISSIONS

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Australian Research
Council (ARC) are embarking on a collaborative undertaking to progress the priority goal of
Ageing Well, Ageing Productively, as identified in the National Research Priorities announced
by the Government in December 2002. The aim of this collaboration is to foster research in
to ageing which crosses sectors, research disciplines and institutions to develop an
authoritative evidence base to underpin more effective and well informed policy and practice.

To direct the development of this initiative, the NHMRC and ARC have established the
Ageing Well, Ageing Productively Working Group. The Working Group, informed by the
consultation and debate on ageing that has occurred in Australia and internationally over the
last 18 months, have identified four research themes. The Working Group is now seeking
broad stakeholder input to, and comment on, the identified themes which will assist in
developing a call for targeted research. Details on how to access information on the themes
are provided below.

Submissions in relation to the four themes should seek to further inform the Working Group
where there are gaps in current knowledge, and where research will make a significant
contribution to improve the health, care and independence of older Australians. Submissions
which acknowledge that ageing is a complex interaction of biological, pathological, social and
psychological processes, and which recognise that there is the need for a multi-disciplinary,
multi-sectoral research effort to better understand the psychological and social factors that
impact on health and well-being are encouraged. All submissions should provide adequate
justification for comments / recommendations made.

It is essential that submissions be informed by background information that can be obtained
on the NHMRC website www.nhmrc.gov.au. under ‘HOT ISSUES’ on the Home Page.
Background information can also be obtained in hard copy from the Secretariat,
Ms Moragh Parker, (02) 6289 9163.

Please forward your submission to the Ageing Well, Ageing Productively Working Group
Secretariat, MDP 33, GPO Box 9848, Canberra ACT 2601, by 5pm Friday 1 October 2004.

Submissions may also be sent electronically to moragh.parker@nhmrc.gov.au.
