                                          Principal’s foreword
 Kentville State School has a growing population, due to housing expansion in the Lockyer Valley Regional Shire that
 is a reflection of the steady 5% annual growth of in this sector of South-East Queensland. The growth has and will
 continue to bring increased enrolments, staff numbers and the need for additional facilities and services. In 2008, the
 prep year as a full cohort will be in Queensland schools.
 Kentville State School aims to provide a quality education to equip young Queenslanders for the future to enable
 them to contribute to a socially, economically and culturally vibrant society. Our school vision has been developed
 from our IDEAS journey and is “Hand in Hand, UNITE, BELIEVE, SUCCEED”. Our values developed through the
 IDEAS journey are: responsibility, fairness, friendship, working together, safe environment.
 At Kentville State School we will continue to provide quality teaching practices related to all Key Learning Areas with
 an emphasis on Literacy, Numeracy, Science and ICTs in a multi-age setting. We will also place an emphasis on the
 social and emotional development of all of our students.

  Future outlook
 We have a newly appointed principal for 2009 and a new Parent and Citizens executive committee. A new Head of
 Curriculum will be appointed on a part time basis in semester two.
 In 2009 we plan to continue the Year 7 Leaders Program- building self esteem and self worth using social skilling
 strategies to enhance morale and enhance school spirit.
 In 2009 we will modify our Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students to directly relate to our school’s values and our
 policy to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment for all students. We will use our IDEAS symbol (a hand) to
 use tools such as the High 5 and the GOTCHA rewards program. We are preparing to become a School Wide
 Positive Behaviour School by 2010.
 In 2009 we will participate in community events like ANZAC Day.
 In 2009 we will introduce: a Tuckshop service on Fridays; a road bike safety course for our upper years students and
 continue with the National Rugby League skills development program.
 In 2009 we will have an emphasis on Literacy, Numeracy and Social Emotional Learning in the classrooms. There will
 be a continued focus on science through the use of the award winning Primary Connections Science Programme that
 links science and literacy. Thereby providing another teaching opportunity to make literacy learning explicit and
 relevant. There will also a focus on hands-on science based learning.
 We will continue to recognise and support our gifted and talented students by providing them with multiple

 opportunities to extend their learning.
 Recognition of the diverse cultural differences of our students especially those that are indigenous is an essential part
 of our school’s strategic plan. This will be achieved through the various KLAs, a focus on NAIDOC week.
 An investment in the future of our students will be achieved by ensuring we have a curriculum that meets the needs of
 our students and the community. This will be achieved mainly through the school’s investment in the employment of a
 part time Head of Curriculum.
 The focus for our teachers will continue to be the implementation of the QCAR (Queensland Curriculum and
 Reporting) Framework and the new P-12 Curriculum Framework and 2008-09 QSDES Early Years Case Study
 Schools Project. The Four Resources Literacy Framework (based on Luke and Freebody’s (1990, 1998) literacy
 practices). Teachers’ professional development in the key focus areas for the school will be supported through course
 such as: Literacy Framework for Teachers; First Steps in Maths; Functional Grammar; Information Communications
 and Technology Digital Pedagogical Certificate or Licence.

Kentville State School is situated in a rural setting overlooking irrigated farming land on the northern sector of the
Lockyer Valley Regional Shire. The school is equidistant for the towns of Laidley, Lowood and Gatton and overlooks
the Forest Hill-Fernvale Road, twelve kilometres north of the Warrego Highway. The school has evolved from a rural
base to one of small acreage development. The school draws it’s 90% of it’s enrolment from the Kentville area and
the rural residential development of Lockyer Waters. The other 10% choose to travel to this school.
Approximately 85% of our students travel to and from school by Burns Buses (Coominya). The school caters for both
male and female students from Prep-7, with an enrolment of 64 students.
The school has three multi-age classes (stage based in setup) - one Early Years and two Middle Phase of Learning
classes. The school has an indigenous population of 9%.

   Curriculum offerings
 Our distinctive curriculum offerings
    •   Primary Connections Science units (Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and
        Workplace Relations (DEEWR) linking science and literacy in rich science teaching
    •   Health and Physical Education Program includes: a whole swimming program (Terms 1 & 4)
    •   Camps for Years 6 and 7
    •   Interschool sport carnivals(swimming/athletics/ball games, Prep-7) and soccer/netball competitions (Year 3-7)

 Extra curricula activities
    •   The Student Council is comprised of all student leaders and representatives from each of the three classes.
        The Student Council provides students with perspectives on the operation of the school and fund special
        projects within the school and holds Free Dress Days for charities. The Student Council has evolved form the
        IDEAS forums for students. The Council also puts forward ideas and motions from the students to the
        administration and P&C for consideration.
    •   The school’s Leadership Program consists of six Senior Leaders, House Captains and Library Monitors from
        Year 7. The positions have special duties and responsibilities within the school and students undertake to
        uphold these at a special badge presentation ceremony early in Term 1 annually.

    •   Learning Expos are held at the end of each term, to showcase student’s front end assessment tasks, that they
        have been working on during the term. These Local Assessment Tasks (LATs) are an integrated KLA
        approach to student learning and will assist students in QCAR Assessment tasks in the future.
    •   During Education Week the school participates in local cluster activities highlighting State School Education
        including dancer performances at the local shopping centre and Lockyer Valley Under 8’s Day.
    •   During Literacy & Numeracy week a day was dedicated to celebrate students’ achievements in these areas
        with members of the local community and guest speakers. Students got to dress up at as their favourite book
    •   Play-based, enquiry and investigative principles that Early Years of Learning students operate under.
    •   A Year 6/7 camp on North Stradbroke Island with a focus on indigenous perspectives and awareness.
    •   Learning Support is provided for students using school based programs and accessing the school’s Learning
        Support teacher as well as visiting specialist teachers for Inclusion (intellectual impairment and Autism) and
        Behaviour Management to support our safe, supportive learning environment.

 How computers are used to assist learning:
    •   Computers are integrated through the key Learning Areas and used on a daily basis. Programs such as Movie
        Maker, Word, Excel, Max’s Toolbox and the internet are used to support student learning after the school
        made a purchase. The school has purchased digital projectors to support this.
    •   The School also purchased digital cameras, with ICT grants, to support ICT skilling of the community. Students
        and their families participated in this initiative and in-service on the cameras and the computer component by
        school staff.
    •   All classrooms and teaching blocks are connected by wireless internet connection. The classroom computers
        are networked to a classroom printer and the school’s photocopier. The school was converted to a Managed
        Operating Environment/school server in and began to use Education Queensland’s One-School (web based)
        database for curriculum and student behaviour reporting.
    •   An investment in the support of the computer network and equipment is achieved through the employment of a
        part time technician who is diploma qualified and is orange card certified. It is also supported by the District
        Systems Technician and the Service Centre.

  Social climate
    •   Approximately 60% of parents surveyed were satisfied that the school was a good school.
    •   Approximately half of the parents surveyed indicated that their children were getting a good education at the
    •   Our students are mainly from socially diverse backgrounds. In 2008 the federal government recognised the
        hardship and circumstances of our families as a result of the drought. Consequently the school received
        substantial funding to support their diverse needs and social challenges in 2008. This funding was heavily
        invested in several activities that supported the needs of students and parents in the community. Excursions,
        Arts Council, Brave Hearts, Year 6/7 camp and a whole of school/community excursion to the Gold Coast all
        served to improve the social climate and satisfaction of our students, parents and carers.

    Involving parents in their child’s education.
At Kentville State School, parents play an active part in their child’s education. The school supports and encourages
the active involvement of the P&C. The school community supports the following P&C Association groups:

 P&C Association, School Bus Committee, Fathers’/Mothers’ Day activities, Education Week Activities, Under 8’s Day
 activities, Gatton Show catering activities, Bunning s Sausage Sizzle activities and the Easter Bunnies production.
 The P&C actively fund raise to:
 Decrease the cost of camps, excursions and school uniforms for parents
 Improvements and maintenance of the school grounds
 The parents of Kentville are encouraged to help in the classroom through the Support- a-Reader program and
 numeracy activities.
 At the end of each term the school holds an Expo afternoon to celebrate student achievement and parents are invited
 to view their students’ work.
 Volunteers are acknowledged throughout the year and at a special morning tea in their honour in Term 4, where the
 school shows their appreciation and hands out award certificates.

   •    The total funds expended on teacher professional development in 2007 were $5000.
   •    The major professional development initiatives were as follows: literacy, numeracy, ICTs.

Value added

The Primary Connections Science Programme has provided our teachers with the confidence they
require to implement engaging and interactive/hands-on science based units.
The School Based Chaplain has improved school and community relations and the social and emotional
well-being of our students.
Our Adopt-A-Cop was involved in the Drug Awareness information sessions for parents and carers.
A focused literacy program supported by professional development has increased the knowledge and
understandings and therefore effectiveness of teachers and support staff.
A continued focus on improving our NAPLAN results by ensuring that high order thinking skills are
continually taught and used by students in the classroom.
The federal government’s National Pride in Schools and Building the Education Revolution funding will add much
needed infrastructure and upgrades that will enhance school and community outcomes.

Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school

Students at this school are generally satisfied with the education they are receiving; however, parent
satisfaction and staff morale could improve in 2009. We also need to encourage more parents and carers
to complete their annual school opinion surveys as we did not receive many back to be collated.
86% of staff was engaged in meaningful professional development.
