                         World Refugee
                         Day?      In 2001, The United Nations General Assembly
                                           established 20 June as World Refugee Day.
                                           Since then it has been celebrated around the
                                           world each year as a salute to the indomitable
                                           spirit and courage of the world's refugees.

        We want the world's refugees to be
        remembered -- their courage in enduring
        extreme dangers, violence and crises that
        made them refugees … their courage in
        rebuilding their lives and contributing to
        society in difficult or unfamiliar circumstances.

                                             courage of the world's refugees. The world
                                             celebrates in hundred different ways -- from
                                             stand-up comics and rock concerts to conferences
                                             and memorial services … to as simple as a village
                                             fete or school event. It is all to extend the world's
                                             refugees our encouragement, support and respect.

                                 Millions of refugees under our care are trying to
                                 pick up the pieces of once-peaceful lives. As
                                 different as they are from each other, one thing
                                 connects them all: hope for a better future and a
                                 chance to restore lasting peace to their lives.
4 December 2000:
UN General Assembly adopts Resolution 55/76.
In this resolution, the General Assembly notes that year 2001 marked the 50th
anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. The Organisation
of African Unity (OAU*) agrees to have International Refugee Day coincide with Africa
Refugee Day on 20 June. (Africa Refugee Day, has been formally celebrated on 20
June in several countries over years; could be since 1969.)
The Assembly therefore decides, that from 2001, 20 June would be celebrated as
World Refugee Day.
[* The OAU was replaced by the African Union on 9 July 2002.]
