Way to establish permanent peace

REACHING OUT TO THE UNDER PRIVILEGED

The

Kalgidhar Trust / Society is a multifaceted, not for profit

MISSION STATEMENT
To establish permanent peace in
the world through the synthesis of value based scientific moral education and

charitable organization working for the cause of promoting quality education, primary health, social welfare & spiritual uplift to underprivileged/deprived rural masses in far-flung rural areas of North India. It has been instrumental in bringing about silent but sure reforms to uplift the socio-economic status of the rural poor in the areas covered. The rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, backward hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab are being covered with 41 outstanding 10+2 Schools affiliated or proposed to be affiliated with The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Govt. of India, New Delhi. These Schools provide modern education to 32,000 students mostly from deprived sections of the society.

rejuvenation thereby creating good global citizens.

Many other programs like De-addiction Centers (on an improved
pattern of Alcoholics Anonymous), fully equipped Charity Hospital, Orphanage, Women Care Centre & Senior Citizen Centre are also run by the TKT/S. Training and employment of rural youth especially focussed on Women Empowerment, through Teachers Training, Embroidery, Stitching & Office management with computers is the latest addition to these programs.

THE KALGIDHAR TRUST/ SOCIETY*
A NOT FOR PROFIT CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION FOR THE UPLIFT OF UNDERPRIVILEGED RURAL MASSES *

The mass urbanization is taking a toll on the rural masses and the
scary results are already showing up in the widening gap amongst the rich & poor. Ignorance & illiteracy in the rural folks, compounded by the lack of health care needs, brings about helplessness in their lives. TKT/S having identified these root causes, is methodically planning to take up the challenge of providing their services to the rural poor.

Two different organizations (legal entities under

Indian law, undertaking the same task and same mission) were established. The Kalgidhar Trust was established first and the The Kalgidhar Society was established a year later to broaden the scope of the mission. Both organizations complement and supplement each other's work and functions in an integrated way.

The

strategy is simple yet effective- "Move away from

urbanization", "Provide value based scientific education & spiritual uplift" - "Reach out to the Underprivileged" with health care needs and create an industrial base for their economic development. Having felt the need to expand the scope of this noble cause, TKT/S plans to expand & branch out into far flung rural areas by opening up 150 Schools within the next 5 years with assistance from Charitable Institutions and worthy donors. Remarkably, session 2008 saw the addition of 19 new schools.

OUR VISION Aim to be an enabler for the creation
of 'high caliber' globally diversified student base nurturing all-round excellence, beyond academic dimension to produce tomorrow's value-based global citizens from the under-privileged classes

A growing need for higher education was felt,

and year 2007 saw

commencement of Akal College of Engg. & Tech. (ACET) at Baru Sahib and in 2008, approval to setup “Eternal University” was received.

It is expected that a silent socio-economic uplift reform will result
out of this sure-footed grass-root effort. The footprints of "eradication of illiteracy &social evils" would keep on growing and positively touch lives and fulfill needs of the rural poor & the deprived.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
A. EDUCATION FOR THE RURAL POOR
the male & female children. Unless drastic measures are taken to arrest this trend, a social catastrophe is in the offing. The focus of The Kalgidhar Trust / Society is to reach out to deprived masses who are cocooned in far flung rural areas, where modern education is the need of the hour. TKT / S intends to intervene and make available value based education in its own silent and humble way.

There is a growing disparity in the education levels amongst the urban & rural masses and also

In the past, India was a leading country in education with
International Universities like Nalanda & Texla leading the way. But despite this , India is home to the world's largest illiterates. India accounts for 20% of the world's out-of-school children and for 20% of the gender-gap in elementary education.

Bias

against women & girls is reflected in the

demographic ratio of below 900 females per 1000 males due to rampant female infanticide. From childhood, girls suffer from active discrimination, resulting in malnutrition, lack of educational opportunity, low self esteem and cyclical ill health, which is compounded by early marriage and excessive childbearing. Poverty, lack of awareness about health care, combined with ignorance and superstition, result in a high infant and maternal mortality rate.

Rural female children are being neglected by their own parents as far as spending on education
and nutrition is concerned. The very notion that the spending on education will go waste because the girl, has to be married off and cannot be an asset of parent family, is strongly embedded in the minds of the parents. The female child is always looked upon as a liability by the parents and this is reflected in the last census figures of the gender ratio, in the absence of recent figures it is estimated that the situation has worsened to a disappointing figure of 600 girls to 1000 boys in Punjab :

SOCIO - ECONOMIC UPLIFT OF THE UNDER - PRIVILEGED

EMPOWERING THE SMALL FARMERS FROM ECONOMICALLY WEAKER SECTIONS AND LOWER INCOME GROUP

Land holdings of small & marginal farming families are dwindling day by day due to the growing
population pressure. A sustainable educational exposure, agricultural development and poverty alleviation are closely interlinked. Educating the rural farmers with emphasis on diversification of Agriculture and Value Addition is a must.

Nearly 1/4th of India's population, 251 million out of more then one billion, is below the poverty
line.170 million of the poor, 68 percent are rural and the remaining 32 percent are urban. The rural settings and opportunities could be improved for securing livelihood security and consequently rationalizing the migration to the cities. An analysis of the incidence of rural poverty and hunger by farm size reveals that more than half of the landless people are poor. Literacy has a very high impact on poverty alleviation as well as on hunger reduction. The illiterate people, whether urban or rural, are the most poor and malnourished. Contributions of small holders in securing food for growing population have increased considerably even though they are most insecure and vulnerable group in the society.

For

poor farm-households whose major endowment is its labor force, economic growth with

educational equity will give increased entitlement by offering favorable markets for its products and more employment opportunities.

C. FULFILMENT OF THE HEALTH NEEDS IN FAR FLUNG AREAS The Kalgidhar Trust / Society works on strengthening primary healthcare through grass-root level public health interventions based on community interventions. Efforts are being made to improve basic health care for the common man through better immunization, child and maternal healthcare and control of diseases through preventive and curative measures. The idea is "reaching out to the underprivileged". D. SAVING THE RURAL MASSES FROM SOCIAL EVILS

The Kalgidhar Trust / Society has already planned to eradicate the abuse of alcohol & drugs with a method similar to Alcoholics Anonymous-USA but which is much improved & localized and has setup 3 De-addiction centers combating various types of dangerous drugs being used in rural areas. Similarly for lack of basic education, there is every possibility of degradation of moral values. This two-fold malaise in society, if not arrested can lead to dire consequences. TKT / S plans to establish more de-addiction centers in rural areas in the next few years. Besides giving modern scientific education in its Academies (CBSE Schools), TKT / S lays more emphasis on value based morals of the children. This unique system of "value based education" is different from most educational institutions which are either imparting 'literacy' or 'education'. TKT / S feels that the concept of education is "mere application of literacy for the betterment of mankind" but still under the influence of egoistic forces. A step forward is "value based education", which is "application of literacy/education, selflessly for the betterment of mankind, to achieve 'divine wisdom' leading to self-realization" which is also called 'Brahm Gyan' or Spiritual Wisdom. The ultimate aim of TKT / S is to produce virtuous persons who are able to reach the level of 'spiritual enlightenment' to establish permanent peace and universal brotherhood in this world. These children having imbibed the virtues can become the leaders & torch-bearers for others as well; thereby helping eradicate social evils amongst their contacts. Experience tells that, one morally enlightened child can influence 30-35 members of the society. E. HIV / AIDS CENTERS A number of HIV / AIDS, “ONE STOP CENTERS” are planned by TKT / S. High risk populations for HIV / AIDS will be identified and surveyed for health education, prevention and treatment of the disease. F. RURAL EMPLOYMENT TRAINING & FACILITATION CENTERS Rural Youth are given computer education and office management skills thereby creating a bank of clerical staff to be inducted by the organisation’s schools immediately after the free training. This has resulted in the rural youth undergoing social transformation, socio-economic prosperity and a chance to be useful to the society thereby raising their self-esteem and confidence. G. WOMEN EMPOWERMENT A unique program named “Akal Rozgar Yojana” was setup to develop & train human resources thereby generating new avenues of employment for rural unemployed people. Womenfolk are trained in handicrafts, embroidery, stitching etc. at local training centers and after the training period are provided with ample work from the cities thereby improving their quality of life and economic betterment. The morale of the womenfolk has been boosted and they are positively finding solutions to the wretched lives that they have been living in these rural areas. 8 handicraft/stitching training centers have been setup to bring about this 'women empowerment' socioeconomic model.

(iii) Drug De-addiction

Through three De-Addiction centers being run at village Cheema, Jharon and Baru Sahib, The Kalgidhar Trust / Society aims to tackle this social malaise which ails our youth, who get addicted to various kinds of drugs, alcohol and narcotics from an early age. The Akal Deaddiction Centers are helping in eradicating vices amongst the rural folk and bringing down the crime rate, conflicts, litigations etc amongst these sections. The alcohol free movement being run on an improved pattern of the 'Alcoholics Anonymous-USA' is proving as a savior against marital discords and exploitation of the womenfolk.
The following methodology is adopted to treat the patients in the deaddiction centers: i) Seminars are conducted from time to time in different villages enlightening the youth against drugaddiction and alcoholism. ii) Patients are admitted in the de-addiction camps in the batches of 45 for duration of two months and more if required. iii) The treatment is done through yoga sessions and daily meditation with emphasis on the focus towards spirituality. Apart from early morning and evening spiritual sessions, three more additional spiritual sessions are conducted during the day which gives them the additional will-power and determination. iv) Through counseling, they are enlightened against the evils of drug-addiction. This de-addiction camp is being run under the supervision of Col. Dr. Rajinder Singh (MBBS, DPM, MD) who volunteers his services for the camp assisted by MBBS doctors and assistants providing round the clock services. v) To treat new patients, assistance is also taken from persons already treated. They act as living examples to new patients inspiring others to renounce alcohol and drugs. vi) The entire treatment is done free of charge and the patients are also provided free care, food and lodging.

More than 1,740 persons have benefitted from this centre. This unique noble venture has produced remarkable results, having achieved a success rate of 82% (1 year follow up) which is way above the maximum success rate of about 42% reported so far in the international sphere. These spectacular results are due to the multidimensional approach at this centre. The patients, in addition to the usual treatment with medicines and psychotherapy, are made to participate in voluntary service at the spiritual centre. Besides this, they meditate on the divine name. This gives them additional strength to fight the withdrawal symptoms and also confidence in their own abilities that builds up their self esteem.
