 Young people who would like to leave school before the end of year 10
  How has the law on the school leaving age changed?
  From 1 January 2010, young people in NSW must complete Year 10 and then continue
  in either full-time education or training, full-time paid employment, or a combination of
  education, training and employment until at least the age of 17.                                 Where can you get help and

    or caregiver will be asked to meet with a TAFE counsellor to explore options, which could
    include attending school, TAFE or a combination of school and TAFE. You will complete an
    approval form, which you can get from your school principal or a TAFE campus.
  • Both your school principal and the TAFE Institute Director or their delegate will decide if
    you meet the criteria to complete a Year 10 equivalent course at TAFE.
  • You will only be approved to study at TAFE if:
     > you meet all these criteria
     > there is a place available at the TAFE NSW campus and
     > you have written permission from both your school principal and the Institute Director

What qualifications can you study at TAFE NSW that are equivalent to Year 10?
• All vocational Certificate II qualifications offered by TAFE NSW as equivalent to Year 10 are designed to start you on a training
  pathway to skills for employment.
• TAFE Institutes will offer these qualifications with appropriate support if you are assessed as needing help to complete your
  selected Certificate II.
• The qualifications available will depend on what the TAFE campus is offering. You should find out which courses will be offered
  and select several preferences, as vacancies in some courses will also vary.
• Courses available may include those in industry areas such as: Agriculture and Horticulture, Conservation and Land
  Management, Construction, Hospitality, Information Technology, Retail and Aquaculture.
• Some qualifications can be undertaken as part of a traineeship. TAFE staff and counsellors can advise you further.

What happens next?
• Your School Principal will inform you of the result of your application.
• If your application is approved, you will also be informed of the date on which to attend the local TAFE campus to enrol in the
  qualification. When you enrol you will need to provide details of your date of birth and your highest level of school education.
• You will remain at school until classes start at the TAFE campus.
• If your application is not approved, your school Principal will discuss other school or school-TAFE options to help you to
  complete Year 10 at school.
