special notes:           For the purpose of this unit standard physical optics covers a

Sketch and interpret a geometric optical system.

Range:      plane and curved mirrors, simple lenses.

performance criteria

1.1         Sketches represent ray paths identifying objects and images for a given
            system.

1.2         Interpretation of diagrams is consistent with the optical system.

Determine quantities in geometric optical systems.

Range:      image distance, focal length, object distance, magnification.

performance criteria

2.1         The problem solving method selected is appropriate to the quantities to be
            determined, and valid working is shown.

2.2         The answer is consistent with the information supplied and is expressed in
            terms of the appropriate Systeme International (SI) units.

Determine quantities in transparent media.

Range:      refractive index, angle of incidence and refraction, total internal reflection.

            terms of the appropriate SI units.

4.1         The description is consistent with the principles of optics.

4.2         The description identifies causes and corrections of chromatic aberrations.
