Preparation for the ASE certification exam will include concentrated study in brake systems, electrical systems, engine performance, and suspension and steering systems. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option. AUTO SERVICE TECHNOLOGY I, II & III BUILDING TRADES (INTRODUCTION TO) This course is designed to introduce 10th grade students to the major careers found in the construction industry. Four areas are explored: carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing and masonry. Students will have actual hands-on experiences in each of the four areas to help them decide which trade they want to specialize in at Burton. CIT II is devoted to Computer Operating systems. You will learn the basics of operating systems and how they interrelate to computer hardware. You will deal with DOS, Windows Operating Systems, Novell, and LINUX. The course is designed around the requirement of the A+ CompTIA certification. The A+ test is the industry wide accepted standard for employment in the computer field. This year is devoted to students passing the operating system of the A+ test. Students should have a strong background in mathematics and a good grade point average. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option. COMPUTER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY II Criminal Justice I, II and III are classes designed to prepare students for further study in the criminal justice field. These courses include classroom study and practical exercises in the fields of law enforcement, courts and corrections. Exercises are conducted using equipment and simulated laboratory situations to allow the student to experience as many duties involved in this growing field as possible. Activities in Criminal Justice II are designed to give the student a deeper understanding of their studies during Criminal Justice I. Criminal Justice III pulls 2 years of prior learning into a study of current issues in the field. Guest speakers and visits to local criminal justice facilities are included. Some training may occur at off campus sites. Any student interested in working in the law enforcement, court or corrections systems is encouraged to apply for the class. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option. CRIMINAL JUSTICE I , II & III BUILDING TRADES I & II Grade level: 11 and 12. The three areas of carpentry, electrical wiring and plumbing comprise the course of study in building Trades I & II. (Masonry is a stand-alone course.) Students further their studies in each of these fields and begin to specialize in their highest area of interest. Actual handsonpractice gives the students valuable experience as they develop their skills. As part of their work, students will assemble floor, wall, and roof section from plans as well as install electrical and plumbing systems typically found in residential structures. Students in Building Trades II will have the opportunity to CO-OP with Contractors in the Roanoke area. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option. DIGITAL DESIGN/MULTIMEDIA Develop proficiency in using desktop publishing software. Students work in a Windows environment using Word2002, PowerPoint2002, PageMaker 6.5, Adobe Photoshop, paint programs, CD-ROM packages, scanners and digital cameras. *Cooperative Office Education (COE) available. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option. Provides career training for the student unable to obtain training through existing programs. Individual training sites will be developed with local business and industry to provide specific career training for students working with professionals in chosen area. Classroom instruction provides emphasis in developing personal employability skills, such as positive work habits, communication skills, portfolio development, applying and interviewing, employee relations and money management. CAREER COOPERATIVE EDUCATION (CCE) CIT I is devoted to Computer Hardware and Repair. You will learn about the components and architecture of a computer. The course is designed around the requirement of the A+ CompTIA certification. The A+ test is the industry wide accepted standard for employment in the computer field. The A+ test is divided into two parts. The first test deals with hardware knowledge. The second semester you learn networking basics that will enable you to pass the hardware portion of the A+ hardware exam. It will teach the industry standards of CAT5 cabling including networking media, topology, and wiring standards. Students should have a strong background in mathematics and a good grade point average.**VWCC Dual Enrollment option. COMPUTER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY I CIT III is devoted to helping students pass the Network+ test offered by CompTIA. This is the industry standard for networking technicians. You will learn about the OSI model and its seven layers. You will see how this model is used to set up communication within networks and over the Internet. You will become familiar with the networking devices at each layer. Each one of these layers communicates with the next through the use of networking software and protocols. You will learn about IP and the numbering system associated with it. You will learn about routed and routing protocols. The second semester is devoted to hands on work with the routers. You will learn CISCO router commands and how routers are programmed. This is done by the student having hands on access to routers. Students should have a strong background in mathematics and good grade point average. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option. COMPUTER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY III Learn to design and create advanced desktop published and multimedia projects, design and create Web sites, relate project applications to business and industry, and develop proficiency in public presentations. *Cooperative Office Education (COE) available. ADVANCED DIGITAL DESIGN/MULTIMEDIA COSMETOLOGY I, II & III Students develop skills in hair cutting, permanent waving, chemical hair relaxing, wig and hairpiece care and styling. Additional skills include manicures/pedicures, facials, hair lightening and tinting hair, salon planning and management. Advanced students practice skills on patrons in the Burton Salon that operates on Thursdays, 3-5pm. Must take Virginia Cosmetology License Exam. Prepares student for employment in child care center or as a family child care provider. Training includes organizing and leading activities for pre-kindergarten children. Develops skills in child development, guidance and discipline, creative activities, foods and nutrition, and safety. Advanced studies include employment information, basic child development of the infant and school-age child, the exceptional child, and types of learning centers. Second year students may have the opportunity to intern at local elementary schools or pre-school programs. Students will also explore the life cycle as it pertains to employment skill working with senior citizens. A brief internship is geriatrics will be included during the second year of the program. *Cooperative Education credit available. *VWCC Dual Enrollment option. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION I & II Students learn flower arranging, corsage and boutonniere construction, and bow-making, and also develop skills in growing a wide variety of greenhouse flowering and foliage plants. Sales, merchandising and communication skills used in the operation and maintenance of a retail shop are stressed. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option. FLORAL DESIGN/ADVANCED FLORAL DESIGN MASONRY I, II & III Develop skills and technical knowledge in laying block and brick, reading blueprint and building specifications, mixing and pouring concrete, designing and building fireplaces and chimneys, and other required competencies for masonry workers. Students will start the Masonry Apprenticeship classroom training. Instruction will be provided in the principles of race car fabrication and all facets of the racing industry. The course will also include chassis preparation, engine machine technology, racing protocol, and regulatory compliance. Business aspects of the motorsports industry will also be taught. Participation in SkillsUSA student organization activities is required. Students will get to drive a Late Model Race Car. Currently, a 1923 Super Comp Drag Car is being constructed. Also, a Honda CRX Drag CAR will be built. Students are required to purchase 24hour accident insurance, pay fees for extra-curricular activities, and purchase steel-toed boots. A materials fee may be charged. with Oracle’s integrated design environment, JDeveloper. Refining these Internet Technology skills will help to secure your future as an Internet Technology professional. MOTORSPORTS TECHNOLOGY Provides instruction in graphic design and advertising theory through high-tech computer methods. Includes design elements, typography, layout, copy and art preparation, and illustration methods. Second year students prepare a portfolio of work including computer design and illustration, photography and 2D, multimedia, display and package design. GRAPHIC/ADVERTISING DESIGN I & II First year develops skills and technical knowledge pertaining to hand tools and equipment to shape metal. Machining processes such as facing, turning, knurling, and chasing screw treads on the engine lathe are practiced. Second year develops skills and technical knowledge pertaining to basic computer numerical control programming and operation of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), as well as refining skills on standard machining equipment. Instruction provided in Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining operation, along with metal band saw, vertical milling machines, and the surface grinder. *VWCC Dual Enrollment option. Open to 12th graders who aspire to be public school teachers. Students must be planning on attending a teacher preparation college and major in Education. Students must have the high school course work to support this goal. Students will explore the skills and traits needed to be successful teachers. They will create lesson plans, and demonstrate classroom leadership as they intern with Pre-K – 5th grade classrooms in their high school area. Students must create an in-depth portfolio. Students must provide their own transportation to the internship location and have three letters of recommendation from school personnel prior to acceptance into the program. Students must have internet access for the distance learning portion of the program. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option. PRECISION MACHINING / MACHINE TECHNOLOGY TEACHING INTERNSHIP Provides student with occupational training through the use of business and industrial establishments to help bridge the gap between school and employment. Classroom instruction is given in job search and personal employability skill enhancement, including portfolio development, interviewing, employee relations, money management, and career planning. INDUSTRIAL COOPERATIVE TRAINING (ICT) Study the concepts of programming using Visual Basic 6.0. Create web pages using HTML and Java Scripting. *Cooperative Office Education (COE) available. INTERNET PROGRAMMING AND DESIGN Learn basic landscape design skills and how to install and maintain a landscape plan. Landscape structures such as walks, trellises, and arbors will also be covered. Develop skills needed to establish and maintain a lawn and to produce nursery and bedding plants. LANDSCAPING I & II/TURF MANAGEMENT While most high school students are surfing the web, Oracle Academy students at Burton can control the net! As an Academy student, you’ll design strategic applications to solve complex business scenarios, and meet with industry professionals who’ll speak with you about jobs, resumes and “real world” experiences all within your first year. You will have access to the latest Oracle database technology using Oracle web-enabled software – the same software used by industry professionals around the world! By year two, you’ll be learning the basics of the Java Programming language and talking “Java” (ORACLE) I & II DATABASE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT WELDING I, II & III Three-year program prepares students for three different national certifications in welding. Instruction is given in basic oxy-acetylene, S.M.A.W., G.M.A.W., F.C.A.W and G.T.A.W. welding and plasma cutting. Both theory and hands-on experience. **VWCC Dual Enrollment option.
