Why Do We Separate Thy Word is Truth Matthew 418-22 And Jesus
Why Do We Separate? Thy Word is Truth Matthew 4:18-22 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. What is truth? Why is important to have truth? Can we have truth? Question: More importantly can we look upon God’s Word as the absolute and only truth needed? Illus: Six Mistakes Of Man The Roman philosopher and statesman, Cicero, made this statement some 2,000 years ago, and it is still true. 1. The delusion that personal gain is made by crushing others. 2. The tendency to worry about things that cannot be changed or corrected. 3. Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it. 4. Refusing to set aside trivial preferences. 5. Neglecting development and refinement of the mind, and not acquiring the habit of reading and study. 6. Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do. I should submit to you a 7th mistake of man. Not fashioning our Christian life after sound Biblical Doctrine… -we have a very weak Christian Church today because we have a very weak view of God’s Word. -This I am sure would be debated extensively across Christianity… -But the proof, as they say, is in the pudding… God’s Word: Heb 10:25…Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together 14 opportunities to be assembled together in November…How many? 1 Peter 1.22… see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Why is it we still carry unforgiving spirits towards brethren? Answers the question: Can we look upon God’s Word as the absolute and only truth needed? God’s Word clearly states: 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: Profitable- useful Doctrine- instruction Reproof- convincing a man of his sins Correction- leading to a correction of life--a reformation Instruction in righteousness- how to live a holy life Societies View of Truth: Quote by: Gustave Flaubert…French writer…heathen… There is no truth…only perception This was the Great Controversy in Spurgeons Day…Downgrade… Spurgeon was burdened over the doctrinal destruction and corruption of churches in his day. Not much has changed these nearly 150 years later. Article Written in the Sword and the Trowel: The Downgrade: Rev. Shindler named this. A following away from doctrinal truth… "The Presbyterians were the first to get on the down line," Shindler wrote. They took the route of worldly wisdom: "They paid more attention to classical attainments and other branches of learning. . . . Than God’s Word. Problem is not simply the drifting from truth but the fact that there are few who will fight against it: Many of those who remained true to the faith were nevertheless reluctant to fight for what they believed in. "Those who were really orthodox in their sentiments were too often lax and unfaithful as to the introduction of heretical ministers into their pulpits, either as assistants or occasional preachers. -the beginning of introducing those who deny all or part of God’s Word into the church. In a few decades the fervor was gone: The fervor that had so captured the soul of England gave way to dry, listless apostate teaching. Churches became lax... Where should the fault lay…for the downward spiral of the spiritual condition of Christianity? Spurgeons Friend…Rev. Shindler..laid the blame for the downhill slide at the feet of the church leaders. Minister became afraid of telling you the truth… We are learning in 1 Timothy that it is the duty of God’s Men to keep the WORD: Paul’s Charge to keep Right Doctrine: 1. God had committed the truth of the Word to Paul (1 Tim. 1:11), 1 Timothy 1:11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. 2. Paul had committed it to Timothy (1 Tim. 6:20). 1 Timothy 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 3. It was Timothy’s responsibility to guard the faith (2 Tim. 1:14) 2 Timothy 1:14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. 4. Timothy’s responsibility to pass it along to faithful people (2 Tim. 2:2). 2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. How did so many Bible-believing churches go astray? And why does this happen again and again in human history? In the case of every errant course there is always a first wrong step. In order to doubt doctrine today…that which has been held as truth… something had to go before. What was that "something"? What was the common denominator between all those who started on the down-grade? Of those who started on that slippery slope… The first step astray is a lack of faith in the divine inspiration of the sacred Scriptures. Quote: All the while a man bows to the authority of God's Word; he will not entertain any belief contrary to its teaching. But let a man question, or entertain low views of the inspiration and authority of the Bible, and he is without chart to guide him, and without anchor to hold him. **If Charles Haddon Spurgeon…were living today…what would he consider as the most destructive influence upon the church? -The mixture of unbelievers or those who deny essential parts of the Gospel with those who believe the Whole of God’s Word. “The Ecumenical Movement” What is Ecumenical? It is working toward the unification of all Faiths into one…regardless of Doctrine. (One Church) The Call of the Day is: Unity -if we say we love Jesus than it does not matter what we believe… Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Why do I mention this? Because there is much pressure today for churches to all work together for a common goal regardless of what they believe doctrinally. Remember what we learn from 1 Timothy: God had committed the truth of the Word to Paul (1 Tim. 1:11), Paul had committed it to Timothy (1 Tim. 6:20). Timothy’s responsibility to guard the faith (2 Tim. 1:14) Timothy was to commit the doctrine passed to him to faithful people (2 Tim. 2:2). We are to continue the cycle Not about being against unity…or working together for Christ…it is about not deviating from TRUTH. Why is this wrong? Coming together, putting aside Doctrine…beliefs…TRUTH? Reading statement from the FIEC: If all the other local churches and their leaders involved in a united activity are wholly committed to the one true gospel there is no problem. Often, however, some of the churches and leaders with whom we are urged to unite neither believe nor preach those essential gospel truths. Some do not accept the inerrancy of Scripture, the eternal punishment of the unsaved, or that Christ died bearing the punishment due to sinners. Some deny the deity of Christ, his virgin birth, miracles and literal resurrection. Others teach that religious ceremonies such as baptism, the mass and the adoration of Mary have some saving efficacy. How can groups who do not share the common Truth of the Gospel bind themselves together? What does the Bible say about mixing with those who do not hold to the essential truths? Can we mix with those who water down…weaken their doctrinal stand… Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (turn to Amos 3.3ff) Illus: *Charles Spurgeon pulled out of Ecclesiastical organizations…they were deviating from truth…practice *Maurice Bowler…would not involve himself w/ Ecumenical groups…I appreciate his stand Why? Though there was a mixture of those who believed the truth…it was the admixture of those who didn’t that polluted the mix. *SLM: Market Harborough…Baptist Preacher asked, “why not join ‘Churches Together’…” -due to the compromise made by involving groups that do not hold to the “Essential Gospel Truths” -Catholic church…father_________ presided over the “Churches Together” for that year. At no time and at all cost we must not compromise the truths which set us apart. The foundations were laid by our predecessors…we cannot deviate. What is the answer? Defined by the Word: Ecclesiastical Separation- Christian Church Separation "Ecclesiastical separation— the determination to make a definite break in relationship and refuse to work together with those who deny, disobey, and dilute the Scriptures." "Broadly speaking, ecclesiastical separation is the refusal to collaborate with or the withdrawal of a working relationship from an ecclesiastical organization or religious leader that deviates from the standard of Scripture or that does not believe and obey the word of God in doctrine or practice." Ecclesiastical separation is the decision by a local church or by an association of local churches not to engage in cooperative ministry endeavors at an organizational level that are deemed as inconsistent in doctrinal position." Closing: 1 Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, As a Church where are we going to stand? Are we willing to compromise God’s Word for unity? It is better to be unified with Christ than to be unified with the World. Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
