In recent years seminal papers have appeared relating to personalised prescribing of
opioids in the management of cancer pain. Major advances have occurred in our
understanding of the factors that influence a person’s perception of pain and an
individual’s ability to metabolise opioids. For example, key genes affecting pain
processing and the pharmacology of opioids have been identified, novel functional
neuroimaging techniques and assessment tools have been developed and progress in
animal and pre-clinical studies have been reported. This conference brings together
experts in these fields for the first time.

Education and Training at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust

It is one of the Royal Marsden’s over-riding aims to raise the standard of cancer care
throughout the country - and beyond - by sharing its experience and expertise in training,
treatment and care. The hospital’s medical training programme for junior doctors has been
described as the best in Europe, and we maintain the highest standards in all areas of
                                  education about cancer.
