www.hull.ac.uk Online courses MSc in Ageing and Diversity (eLearning) MEd in eLearning Advising for Language Learning 88 89 90 The University’s online programmes give you the opportunity to study for one of our qualifications even if you’re not able to travel to either of our campuses at Hull or Scarborough. Online programmes, delivered through one of the University’s virtual learning environments (VLEs), provide you with the opportunity for ‘anywhere, anytime’ learning – enabling you to fit your studies around your professional and personal responsibilities of work and family life. You have access to learning materials and to communication within the learning community 24 hours a day, from any internetconnected computer in the world. This also gives you frequent opportunities to study alongside colleagues from around the world, providing an exciting and stimulating learning environment. All of our online programmes are subject to the same rigorous processes of quality assurance as the campusbased programmes, so you can be confident that the qualification you obtain will be of the same high standard – the culmination of a rewarding, exciting and effective educational experience. The University has invested heavily in the support of learning through electronic resources, online journals and e-books, and our various student support and study advice services regularly employ online methods which, of course, are especially appropriate for students taking courses online. Online learning is still quite new, and it can feel quite daunting to begin studying for a full qualification through a mode of study that you haven’t experienced before. For this reason, a number of our online programmes offer opportunities for induction into the environment and learning processes, along with the opportunity to study initially for a single module as a taster of the full programme. Our staff are always happy to answer your questions and to give guidance relating to the learning and teaching processes on the individual courses and the degree of commitment needed for the particular balance of individual and collaborative learning that an online programme involves. 87 Online courses Ageing and Diversity (eLearning) MSc This exciting new international online programme recognises the diversity of the ageing experience. It is designed for language graduates or professionals who are interested in developing a career as a language teacher, language adviser, material designer or manager of a language centre and offers a recognised qualification for the new profession of language adviser. The 60-credit programme is delivered online using the University’s virtual learning environment and offers flexible study arrangements over one or two years, which is of particular help for students whose study time is limited because of work or other commitments. The programme focuses on • language learning and teaching (including assessment) • the application of several technologies in language learning and teaching and the understanding of the role of e-tutoring • the establishment of supportive environments for autonomous language learners, including self-access centres for language learning As well as a greater understanding of language learning and the role of an adviser, the programme offers first-hand experience of using a well-designed virtual learning environment. The Department of Modern Languages has a strong record in the development of support for language learning and has won the European Award for Languages three times (in 2003, 2004 and 2007). As a result of the success of SMILE (Strategies for Managing an Independent Learning Environment), a nationally funded project, the department has achieved an international reputation in education for learner support and the promotion of learner autonomy. Modules Language Learning (Semester 1) introduces recent research on second-language learning, its relation to teaching and the role of individual differences. In Semester 2, Management of Open Learning for Languages (MOLL) explores issues of open and distance learning in relation to language learning. A year-long module, Advising for Language Learning, examines the role of the language learning adviser as a new professional and the discourse practices that are likely to facilitate language learning. Modules are designed to represent a nominal 200 hours of study and are divided into 12 sections, each containing a lecture (audio, supported by PowerPoint slides) and discussion tasks. On registration, you become a member of the University Library, allowing access to its large electronic journal collection.
