Technology Education Online Masters (TEOM) Degree Program Information Sheet Beginning Summer Semester 2008 Montana State University’s Department of Education will begin offering Technology Education Online Masters (TEOM) degree program. The design, development, and implementation of the TEOM program by MSU Technology Education faculty was an attempt to provide a vessel by which secondary Technology Education (TE) and Industrial Technology (IT) teachers can expand their content knowledge base specific to the classroom setting, while at the same time earning a Master’s degree. TEOM courses were designed to focus on the practical application of knowledge and skill in the classroom setting.
The online setting of the TEOM program will bring together teachers from across the state, and possibly the country. As such, communications between such individuals will no doubt serve to create a community of learners who together, can transform the state of secondary Technology Education/Industrial Technology programs. The web-based online delivery platform employed by TEOM will also provide an alternative path for those TE/IT teachers who have wanted to return to school for a graduate degree, but were unable to do so due to geographic location constraints. The decision to offer such a program online was based not only on the expressed need from TE/IT teachers in Montana, but also from TE/IT teachers in Wyoming and Idaho.
At this point TEOM is intended for a regional audience extending beyond the boundaries of Montana to Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, Alaska, North and South Dakota. However, no limitations will placed on the state of residence for students wishing to enroll. The inclusion of multiple states in this online program suggests far reaching implications for Technology Education programs across the entire western region. Additionally collaboration among universities will ensure a dynamic program. Technology Education faculty from peer institutions in the West have indicated a willingness to teaching classes in the program as well as help recruit students.
The preliminary TEOM program is outlined in the table below. Please note the first two courses, TE 501 & EDCI 532, will begin June 16, 2008. Registration for summer courses offered by MSU –Bozeman begins March 31, 2008. All TEOM program courses are designed to be specific to the Technology Education paradigm and have been designated as Signature Content by the
Department of Education at Montana State University. Please note students may not have to enroll in all courses sequentially and course enrollment may be dependent upon the teaching load students carry during the typical summer months. Students are required to follow Graduate Program guidelines which can be found at: https://www.applyweb.com/apply/mtstug/menu.html. Please keep in mind course offerings will expand as the program further develops. We want to hear what you would like to see in future courses so that your needs as a Technology Education/Industrial Technology teacher can be met. This is really your program, and although the current courses constitute the foundation of the TEOM program, it is imperative to let us know what content areas would be of benefit to you, your classroom, and your students.
