Improving Confidence in the Remediation of Weathered Hydrocarbons...

Heavy and weathered hydrocarbons are often the source of great deliberation in terms of remediation strategy and objec-
tives. This is partially attributable to the risks they pose to human health through exposure to toxic components, their com-
mon occurrence and because they lend themselves well to novel remediation strategies.

Project PROMISE has developed a risk-based approach to biopiling for sites
contaminated with weathered hydrocarbons. This approach has been dem-
onstrated and validated in field trials, optimising biopile technology by refer-
ence to risk reduction rather than just hydrocarbon losses.

Taken together with new data and technical tools, the research will gener-
ate improved confidence amongst Problem Holders, Stakeholders and the
Regulatory Community in the ability of this technology to successfully treat
weathered hydrocarbons in contaminated soils, thus helping secure in-
creased market penetration and expansion for this established technology.
