married Monica in 1985. Father John Meehan, a
former Hayes teacher, officiated the wedding.
Former coach Bob Burns and schoolmates Kevin
Johnson and Julio Barreto served as groomsmen.
Monica and Ron have three children: Morgan (16
years old), Adriane (13), and Jordan (12). Morgan, a
high school basketball player, was the age 8 record
holder in the 800 yard run. Adriane has a fondness
for track, but won’t give up basketball (a house
rule), so is not allowed to compete. Jordan is the
captain of his soccer team. Ron notes wryly that he

                       Fordham Prep Wins Ninth Annual Hayes Invitational


        Fordham Prep swept to victory in the Ninth Annual Hayes Invitational and Bronx High School
Track & Field Championships at Draddy Gym, Manhattan College, on Thursday, January 9. Fordham
won the Varsity Invitational section with 81 points. Second-place Mount St. Michael garnered 54, and
Iona Prep placed third, with 23. In the Bronx Catholics division, Fordham placed first, Mount second,
and All Hallows third.
       Fordham also won the Freshman divisions, with Mount St. Michael placing second.
        The first event, the Varsity 3200 meter run, gave an indication to things to come when
Fordham Prep harriers John Hunt, Joe Altenau, and Pablo Romero took the first three places. Conrad
Dalton of Fordham was named Outstanding Athlete of the meet for winning the 300 meter run with a
time of 36.8, and the High Jump with a jump of 6 feet, 2 inches. The latter tied a meet record. Dalton
is the country’s leading high school runner in the 500 and 600 meter runs. Another Fordham Prep
runner, Brian McCabe, is currently ranked # 4 in the United States in the high school two mile run.
        Clark Palicka of Fordham Prep tied an Invitational record in the 55 Meter Hurdles, with a time
of 8.0 seconds. Mount St. Michael won the 1600 Meter Relay with a time of 3:38.
        Fordham has won five of the nine Hayes Invitationals, with Mount St. Michael winning the
other four meets.

It's been twenty, thirty, even forty years since you looked at times, and now they've gone and changed the size of the
tracks and changed the distances so that the times don't mean anything!
Here's a rough guide to help you through the meet. Just be grateful that we do not have Fully Automatic Timing, which
adds another set of calculations.

                   WHAT IS THE ALUMNI TRACK ASSOCIATION, INC.?
           More than ten years ago a dozen former members of the Hayes track team gathered at Baker Field to witness the
Big Apple Games, an attempt to bring big time outdoor track & field back to New York. Ed Robinson ’61, Marty Holder ’68,Al
Roig ’70, Bob Burns ’69, Frank Pace ’69, John Tobin ’73, Dave Gonzalez ’75, Vin DiDomenico ’70, Mike Perez ’68 and
George Gabriel ’75 were among them. Naturally, the conversation turned towards Hayes and the problems the current team
might be having.
           Months later the first Hayes Alumni Directory arrived and a reunion of the Cross Country squad of 1967-68 was held
with Dennis Ayres, Al Placeres, Mike Perez, Gerry McCarthy, Rich Murphy, Marty Holder, all of the Class of ’68 along with
Bob Burns and Al Roig. Some of us were aware that Hayes was undergoing a severe financial crisis and it was decided that
we should do something to assist.
           The formal process of organizing began in the fall of 1992 . The Officers were Bob Burns ’69, President, Al Roig ’70,
Vice President, Ed Robinson ’61, Secretary and Marty Holder ’68, Treasurer. Through their efforts and the efforts of Carlos
Hevia ’69 and George Gabriel, members of the Board of Directors, the Alumni Track Association was incorporated and non-
profit status was acquired. Carlos arranged our first Matching Gift. We competed in the Alumni Division of the CHSAA Cross
Country Championships and paid off a $10,000 pledge to the school’s endowment in three years.
           At the 1993 reunion Coach Bill Dowling suggested a Bronx Championship and the Hayes Invitational was born.
           The Hayes Alumni Association and Hayes Administration with Monsignor John Graham, and Athletic Directors Tom
Murray and presently C.J. O’Neil helped in every way. Len Vecchio ’69 helped us to win support from J.P. Morgan Chase,
Joe Tito ‘ 69 was successful in getting our meet program printed for many years. John Cifu ’69 roused up support from the
Guardian Life Insurance Company. Rich Murphy ’68 and Marty Holder ’68 brought in Volunteer Grants. Bob Burns ’69, Neil
Sullivan ’59, George Gabriel ’75, Bob Cisneros ’50, Ron McCray ’75 and Paul Zupkay ‘77 brought in large amounts of
financial assistance. When some sources dried up, others like Bill McGarry ’69, Gene Harris ’69 and Peter Brunelli ’69
stepped up.
           The success of the meet probably mirrors the success of the sport in the Bronx. Fordham Prep and Mount Saint
Michael have the most successful programs and have been strong supporters. Some schools have trouble fitting it into their

schedules. Others still depend on one coach and if that person leaves the team either dissolves or starts all over again.
Consequently, there are some years we struggle to bring teams to the arena, but we haven’t given up.
         If anything, we are getting stronger as men from the ‘40s and ’50 bring in more of their teammates. Jim Ryan ’46,
John Moran ’47, Tom Lingren ’48, Bill Law ’49, Bob Cisneros ’50, Ted Bates ’51, Wil Storz ’51, Bill Good ’51, Fr. John
Mulligan ’51 Bob Cleary ’51 are all recent members. Men of the ‘70s are appearing as well with Bob Cowart ’73 and the Alter
Brothers, Kevin ’73 and Ray joining Mike Cea and Ray Alvarez ’73. Now we need men from the ‘80s and 90’s!
         So, where does it all go?
         We kick off with the Frosh Field Day. Rich Murphy ’68 re-instituted this about six years ago when he became
president. Early in October more than three hundred Frosh compete for their homerooms in an afternoon of running, jumping
and throwing. There are plenty of medals and every one gets a T-shirt. So popular has this become that the Sophs, Juniors
and Seniors have requested a field day for their classes.
         More than two dozen students have been provided financial assistance over the last few years, some for as little as
a month and others for the whole four years. We have provided uniforms, a team banner, assistance on trips to the Penn
Relays and State Championship and tickets to the Millrose Games, etc.
         Our budget runs over $10,000 per year and we are rapidly approaching the $100,000 mark in total contributions, but
we can do much more if we expand our base of volunteers and donor support.
         So, we are always looking for new members.
         Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to our many friends and supporters as we acknowledge the tenth
anniversary of the Hayes Invitational.

The Second Year Anniversary
Remembered:




September 2003 was the second anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy. This year, the ceremonies
involved less spectators and officials than last year and the TV coverage was not as extensive. Some want to
begin forgetting that tragic day. The President made a moving statement asking for our continue praying for the
windows, children and relatives of those who perished that day. We of the Hayes Track Alumni family
continue to pray for John’s window, Barbara, his children and for his brother Michael ’73. John was such a
special and loving man, we continue to experience a void left by his passing.

For some, the memories of September 11th are just beginning to come, full force, into consciousness. Post
Traumatic Stress Syndrome has its own clock and two years seems to be when many are beginning to have
dreams and memories of that day. Counselors advise any experiencing these delayed reactions to not be afraid
to talk about the feelings - you are not along in your reactions.
The following is taken from NIH literature:
Individuals who have experienced a traumatic event oftentimes suffer psychological stress related to the
incident. In most instances, these are normal reactions to abnormal situations. Individuals, who feel they are
unable to regain control of their lives, or who experience the following symptoms for more than a month,
should consider seeking outside professional mental health assistance.
The symptoms to watch out for:
     • Recurring thoughts or nightmares about the event.
     • Having trouble sleeping or changes in appetite.
     • Experiencing anxiety and fear, especially when exposed to events or situations reminiscent of the
         trauma.
     • Being on edge, being easily startled or becoming overly alert.
     • Feeling depressed, sad and having low energy.
     • Experiencing memory problems including difficulty in remembering aspects of the trauma.
     • Feeling "scattered" and unable to focus on work or daily activities.
     • Having difficulty making decisions.
     • Feeling irritable, easily agitated, or angry and resentful.
     • Feeling emotionally "numb," withdrawn, disconnected or different from others.
     • Spontaneously crying, feeling a sense of despair and hopelessness.
     • Feeling extremely protective of, or fearful for, the safety of loved ones.
     • Not being able to face certain aspects of the trauma, and avoiding activities, places, or even people that
         remind you of the event.
