UNIT 29 CLEAN TOILETS AND WASHROOMS
MANUALLY (SCHOOLS)
Unit overview
This unit is about cleaning toilets and washrooms using manual equipment only. It also covers
replacing items such as toilet paper and towels. This unit is for you if you work in the Cleaning
and Support Services Industry and you clean toilets and washrooms regularly as part of your
duties.
This unit contains three elements:
29.1 Prepare for cleaning toilets and washrooms
29.2 Clean fixtures and fittings in toilets and washrooms
29.3 Refill and replace consumables
Evidence requirements
Your evidence for this unit must include:
• two witness testimonies describing your performance
• evidence of your understanding and skills. This could be in any suitable format, and
may be supported by translation where necessary, such as:
• two testimonials from senior staff
• records from an expert witness or training mentor of discussions they have had
with you about you understanding
• any other evidence that was produced during the activities or tasks assessed
such as notes, emails or records
• a personal log reflecting your own role, responsibilities and skills.
Workplace assessment
All units must be assessed in the workplace and, as far as possible, all evidence should arise
naturally from the day-to-day tasks and activities involved in support work in school.
Documents or other records produced during the course of work should be used whenever they
are available. Professional explanations written by the candidate or their work colleagues will
also be required.
Simulation
No unit within these qualifications can be achieved solely through the use of simulation;
simulation should only be used as a form of secondary and corroborating source of evidence for
a mandatory or optional unit in the following circumstances:
• aspects of health and safety and personal safety and security where these do not occur in
the normal course of work activities
• child protection, where no incidents occur in the normal course of work activities
• rarely occurring events and procedures (such as reporting problems or faults with
equipment, dealing with breaches of security, dealing with delays and difficulties in fulfilling
reservations of materials etc).
Additional guidance on the use of simulation can be found in the introduction in section
3.6.
