– to provide the bridge between the base
standards under development, and existing
standards and products
– to provide a mechanism to put the base
standards to use

international GI standards already exist
on the ISO/TC 211 agenda is the
harmonisation of existing standards into
profiles of more general standards
main goal of TC 211 is interoperability, for
– flow and re-use of information
– competition on an equal basis
– reduction of costs
