                      ISO/TC 211 WG 5
              Profiles and Functional Standards

        purpose of WG 5:
              – to provide the bridge between the base
                standards under development, and existing
                standards and products
              – to provide a mechanism to put the base
                standards to use

        two projects:
              – 15046-6 Profiles
              – 15854 Functional Standards

              Profiles and Functional Standards

 international GI standards already exist
 on the ISO/TC 211 agenda is the
            harmonisation of existing standards into
            profiles of more general standards
 main goal of TC 211 is interoperability, for
              – flow and re-use of information
              – competition on an equal basis
              – reduction of costs

              Profiles and Functional Standards

 four steps in achieving these goals:
              – identifying information components from
recognised functional standards as input to
                TC 211
              – development of base standards in WGs 1-4
              – development of profiles using TC 211 base
                standards
              – development of product specifications using
TC 211 profiles and base standards

 Work Item 15854 on Functional Standards
         accepted in ballot June 97
        scope:
              – taxonomy of recognized functional standards
              – identification of components of these FSs that
can be harmonised between themselves and
                with TC 211 base standards
              – assistance with development of profiles
                corresponding to these functional standards

 Committee Draft was due for March 1998
 delayed due to recent re-engineering of
