       SELECTION CALL FOR THE ADMISSION TO AN INTERNATIONAL STUDY
            PROGRAM LEADING TO THE AWARD OF A JOINT DEGREE

Since the academic year 2008-2009, the University of Milan (UNIMI), in cooperation with the Université
Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and the Facultés Universitaries Notre Dame de la Paix de Namur (FUNDP),
has started an international joint-degree program involving the “Corso di laurea magistrale in Economics and
Political Science” at UNIMI and two master’s programs at UCL/FUNDP, namely, the “Master en sciences
économiques orientation générale à finalité approfondie” and the “Master en sciences économiques
orientation générale à finalité spécialisée”.

Structure of the international program leading to the award of a joint degree
Like the “Corso di laurea magistrale in Economics and Political Science – EPS” at UNIMI, the “Master en
sciences économiques orientation générale à finalité approfondie” and the “Master en sciences économiques
orientation générale à finalité spécialisée” at UCL/FUNDP are second-level university programs, each of
which lasts two years and is worth a total of 120 ECTS credits.

The joint-degree international program agreed upon by UNIMI and UCL/FUNDP consists of two full
academic years, each worth 60 ECTS credits. In each academic year similar courses are taught and similar
learning activities are carried out at UNIMI and UCL/FUNDP, respectively. All students registered in the
program will spend their first year at their home University and their second year at the host University,
where they will complete their studies and defend their master’s dissertation.
At the end of the joint-degree international program, registered students successfully completing their studies
will obtain the degree of “laurea magistrale in Economics and Political Science” and either the degree of
“Master en sciences économiques orientation générale à finalité approfondie” or the degree of “Master en
sciences économiques orientation générale à finalité spécialisée”.

Financial aspects and scholarships
Joint-degree international program students will pay tuition fees only to their home universities. At host
universities students on mobility will only have to pay administrative registration fees.

During their mobility period abroad in academic year 2009-2010, up to four joint-degree students registered
for the academic year 2008-2009 as first-year students in the “Corso di laurea magistrale in Economics and

                                                      1

Fondazione CARIPLO and UNIMI, of the amount of 15.000,00 euro each.

Admission criteria
1. In the academic year 2008-2009, UNIMI will select for participation in the joint-degree international
   program up to 4 students registered as first-year students for the academic year 2008-2009 in either the
   Economic Analysis and Policy (EAP) or the Philosophy, Politics and Public Policy (PPP) curriculum of
   the EPS program.
2. EPS-EAP students selected for the joint-degree international program will simultaneously be recognized
   as UCL/FUNDP students registered in either the “Master en sciences économiques orientation générale à
   finalité approfondie” or the “Master en sciences économiques orientation générale à finalité spécialisée”,
   according to the study plan they choose to follow during their second year at UCL/FUNDP (see below,
   Annex 1, points a. an b.). EPS-PPP students selected for the joint-degree international program will
   simultaneously be recognized as UCL/FUNDP students registered in the “Master en sciences
   économiques orientation générale à finalité spécialisée”.
3. The following eligibility requirements must be satisfied at the moment of the application:
     a. applicants must be regularly registered as first-year students in the EPS program;
     b. applicants must have gained at least half of the ECTS credits associated with the first- and second-
        term courses and the other learning activities regarded as compulsory in the study plan for the
        curriculum of the EPS program in which the applicants are registered;
     c. the applicants’ weighted cumulative grade point average, relative to the same courses and other
        learning activities as in point b. above, must be no less than 27/30.

Applications
Applicants must fill and sign the application form for admission to the international joint degree program
between UNIMI and UCL/FUNDP (Annex 1 below).

The following documents must be enclosed with the application form:
1.   curriculum vitae;
2.   letter of motivation (maximum length: six hundred words);
3. transcript of the undergraduate career, with the grades obtained in all the exams taken and the final
     grade;
4. transcript of the graduate career in the EPS program, with the grades obtained in all the exams taken up
     until the date of the selection call;
5. any other document or qualification deemed relevant to the competition.

The applicants must submit the application form and the enclosed documents to the secretarial office of the
EPS program (Dr. Michela Argenti, EPS secretarial office, Department of Economics, Business and
Statistics, Via Conservatorio 7, 20122 Milano, 2nd floor). Application form and enclosures may be delivered
by hand, post, or fax (fax number: +39 02 50321505) and must be received by 12:00 a.m., June 5, 2009.

Selection procedures
The candidatures will be assessed by a selection committee, chaired by the director of the EPS program,
Prof. Franco Donzelli, and composed by Prof. Maurizio Ferrera and Dr. Laura Carradori (secretary). After
examining the applicants’ dossiers, the committee will interview the candidates on June 8, from 2:00 p.m.,
Seminar Room, Department of Economics, Business and Statistics, Via Conservatorio 7, 20122 Milano, 2nd
floor.

After completing the interviews, the committee will rank the candidates according to their respective merit.
For each candidate the overall score will be obtained by summing the following four partial scores:

                                                       2
1.   previous academic career and grades obtained in the exams taken in the EPS program (up to 50/100);
2.   curriculum vitae (up to 20/100);
3.   motivations (up to 15/100);
4. proficiency in English (up to 15/100).
Only candidates totalling an overall score of at least 70/100 will qualify for the international joint degree
program.

Within five days from the date of the interviews the ranking will be published online on the website of the
EPS program (www.scienzepolitiche.unimi.it/2010/EPS). No personal communication will be sent to the
candidates.

Applicants in the first four positions of the ranking and qualifying for the international joint degree program
must formally accept to enter the program within five days from the online publication of the ranking, by
sending a letter of acceptance to the secretarial office of the EPS program (Dr. Michela Argenti, EPS
secretarial office, Department of Economics, Business and Statistics, Via Conservatorio 7, 20122 Milano, 2nd
floor).

If the letter of acceptance of a selected candidate is not received by the specified deadline, the same
candidate loses her/his right to enter the program and is replaced by the candidate immediately following in
the ranking, provided that the same qualifies for the international joint degree program. The same
replacement procedure applies in case a selected candidate should give up her/his right to enter the program
before leaving for the host University or should not meet the further requirements, specified below, on which
the authorization to spend the second year of the international joint degree program at the host University is
conditioned.

A selected candidate will be authorized to spend her/his second year at the host University only if, as of
September 10, 2009, she/he meets the following requirements:
1. having gained at least 48 ECTS credits associated with the courses and the other learning activities
     regarded as compulsory in the first-year study plan for the curriculum of the EPS program in which the
     candidate is registered;
2. having been assigned a tutor that will assist her/him during her/his stay at the host University.
