GIVE YOURSELF A SPORTING CHANCE
NEWS Friday 13 June 2008 GIVE YOURSELF ‘A SPORTING CHANCE’ To coincide with Learning Disability Week (15 – 21 June), Cranborne Chase Sporting Chance Association along with Dorset Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust is calling on adults with learning disabilities across Dorset to register for an exciting sporting event to be held next month. ‘A Sporting Chance’ is an annual, day-long event held at Bryanston School in Blandford specifically aimed at giving local adults (aged over 16), with learning disabilities, the chance to try out a range of sports, often otherwise unavailable to them. This year the event will run from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Saturday 12 July and will include such sports as archery, rugby, skittles, cricket, basketball, wall climbing, wheelchair dancing, orienteering, golf, football and a new Special Olympics sport called boccia. Organised by a committee comprising trustees of the Charity and employees from the Trust, East Dorset Mencap, Dorset County Council, Active Dorset, and Dorset Strategic Partnership, the event often attracts up to 350 participants. Linda Rieder from Dorset HealthCare NHS Foundation Trust, explained: “The event costs just £5.00 for each participant (carers are free) and we are hoping to beat attendance figures of recent years. People often come some distance to take part and, in the past, both service-users and their carers have found the event to be huge fun and very motivating. Whatever the weather, the event goes ahead!” To register your interest and to find out more, please call 01202 251106 or 07704 845520 or look at the dedicated web page on www.activedorset.org. Dorset HealthCare NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, learning disability, addictions, community brain injury and community dental services for Bournemouth, Poole and the majority of Dorset.
