DRUG SEIZURES HELP PAY CRIME FIGHTING
                         COSTS IN BOARDMAN

BOARDMAN – A special program from the Department of Justice has helped pay to equip
Boardman police officers this year with undercover buy money, high tech equipment, training
and vehicles for the officers.

The Boardman Police Department participates in a task force with the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Agency to investigate drug crimes in the region and the participation has paid off handsomely
last year. In a filing made today to the Justice Department Township officials reported receiving
$125,178.85 in Federal Equitable Sharing Program Funds as their portion of drug assets
processed in 2008 and spending $110,746.15 for equipment and vehicles.

“In these tight economic times I love the idea of a drug dealer’s seized money being used to
make our community safer. Our police department has been aggressively participating in the
program to help take some of the operational costs from the taxpayers of Boardman. I think that
is just good business, “said William Leicht, township fiscal officer.

“We used the money to buy six used cars for the department which helped Boardman car dealers
during these difficult times. We also funded specialized training for our drug team, funded
undercover drug purchases for our ongoing investigations and purchased life saving AED
equipment for the cruisers.” said Patrick J. Berarducci, Chief of Police. “These are things that
were needed by the officers, but the taxpayers of Boardman did not have to pay for.”

The report indicates the money was spent for the following categories:

   1) Buy money - $3,000
   2) Training expense - $4,900
   3) Police vehicles and AED equipment - $98,911.40

Total expenditures for 2008 are $110, 746.15.

The police department appropriation for 2009 was reported at $7,939,196.67.
