Unlocking the Secrets: Homophones and Homographs Homophones  English words that sound alike but are spelled differently  AND have different meanings too  Examples are: – – – – I, eye, aye dear, deer buy, by, bye their, they’re, there eye eye This is what you see with. You have two of them. I Me, myself And I I I aye aye A pirate would say “Aye, aye” or a voter would vote aye. V I More examples see two to sea too you rain rein ewe reign There are many, many more so Which one should you use? Look up each meaning Or you surely will lose!  Here are a few more: seen, scene great, grate pail, pale bury, berry beat, beet peek, peak Now for the HOMOGRAPHS:  Remember: They are English words that are spelled the same but mean different things.  For example: Look at the word light: Please turn on the light. This has to do with illumination. (Don’t know what illumination means? LOOK IT UP!) It was as light as a feather. This has to do with how heavy it is. Let’s try a few more HOMOGRAPHS: Which fan is an admirer of someone or something? Which fan keeps you cool? (Do you know?)
