Learning Outcomes              Unit Content
1. The characteristics & effects of fire & smoke:
Demonstrate an
understanding of the Triangle of fire, chemical reaction oxygen; fuel; ignition
characteristics and effects source: types of fuel, gases, liquids, solids (including
of fire & smoke metals), materials containing sufficient oxygen to support
                               combustion, sources of ignition, no combustion without all
                               three elements.

                               Products of combustion: smoke, toxic gases, carbon
                               monoxide; damage to property through corrosive effect.

2. Fire spread & smoke penetration:
Explain how fire spread & Fire spread: conduction, convection, radiation, trapped heat
smoke penetration can          increasing temperature;
occur in the workplace Smoke penetration: open doors; holes/gaps in walls,
                               ceilings & floors; ever deepening layer; danger of
                               Measures to limit fire spread/smoke penetration:
                               partitions, fire doors, sealing of service ducting, ceilings,
                               shafts, ventilation systems, storage of combustibles.
                               Persons at risk: Employees (permanent/occasional), the
                               disabled, visitors, others in the immediate vicinity, persons
                               with language difficulties, workstations, customers,
                               contractors: location of each.
3.                             Means of extinguishing fire:
Demonstrate an Cooling, starving, smothering, inhibition
understanding of the Classes of fire: BS EN 2: Classes A, solids; B, liquids; C,
means of extinguishing gases; D, metals; F, cooking oils/fats (specialist use)
fire. Types of portable extinguisher: BS EN 3, BS 5306, BS
                               Water, foam, powder, carbon dioxide, vaporising liquids
                               including halons; operation: internal pressure (permanently
                               stored or gas cartridge); suitability for classes of fire;
                               labeling & instructions for use; maintenance; general fire risk:
                               1 water extinguisher per 200 m² floor space, minimum of 2
                               per floor advised; 30m rule.
                               Other media:
                               Fire blankets, hose reels, fixed protection systems,
                               sprinklers, CO², foam/water deluge protection for large scale
                               bulk storage.

4.                                  Human behaviour & limitations
Demonstrate an
understanding of human Recognition period; response period.
behaviour & limitations in Factors determining length of recognition period; Factors
a fire situation. determining length of response period; impact of behaviour
                                    on evacuation time.
                                           Factors influencing behavior:
                                           Psychological: role of setting, role of person,
                                           Social: bystander effect, misinterpretation of events,
                                           collective ignorance, conflict in response, avoidance
                                           behaviour, commitment behavior, group behaviour
                                           Additional factors: degree of familiarity with
                                           building, degree of alertness, physical position,
                                           Physical: limited tolerance of heat & smoke, degree
                                           of visibility, disorientation, stress generation.
                                           Measures to influence behavior:
                                           Building design: compartmentation, & fire separation;
                                           protected emergency escape routes; well planned
                                           evacuation procedures; clear & unmistakable warning
                                           of fire; fire safety training of personnel; authoritative,
                                           well trained staff assisting evacuation.
