Building a Sustainable Local Food Economy

  FARM to FORK Summit – May 11 & 12
     Culmination of statewide initiative run by Center for
      Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) under the leadership of
      Dr. Nancy Creamer
          400 participants in two-day Summit
          Speakers included Gov. Perdue, Rep. Etheridge
          Focus was on local food accessibility. If everyone spent just
           $.50 it would be a $1.7 billion increase for our farmers.

     11 “Working Issues Teams” presented “Game Changer” concepts
          Retail & Institutional Group concept is “Feed the Forces”
“Game Changer”



     Retail & Institutional Team will develop a statewide
      model adapted for other institutional markets such as
      UNC systems, hospitals, etc.


     Goal is to develop new partnerships while coordinating
      business entities that will address challenges

   USDA Stimulus Grant Proposal prepared at request of
    NCDA; joint proposal with Eastern NC Military Growth Task

   Proposal would implement „Feed the Forces‟ statewide by:
        Developing local cold storage, processing and distribution
         centers to enable small to medium-sized farms and farm
         cooperatives to serve Ft. Bragg & Camp Lejeune with locally
         grown produce
        Creating an organization to operate facilities

      DISCUSSION: A key objective of the Workforce
       Demonstration Program is to establish a Virtual Network
       within all 11 counties that connects educational
       institutions and industry partners using i3D equipment
       and distributive learning.
      ACTION ITEM: Request approval to use up to $30,000
       in DOL funding to make the necessary technology
       upgrades to support the pilot circuit program and
       develop a model high tech classroom.
FSU / UNC-P Study Status

   Progress Update
       Quantitative and qualitative data is being collected and
        analyzed – assets; obstacles; solutions
       County focus groups are almost complete – Harnett,
        Sampson, Scotland remain
       2nd Regional Summit occurred 6 May at UNC-P
            75 attendees
       Preliminary Findings: Key barriers across all counties are
        Transportation; Communication; Literacy
       End Result: Action plan and recommendations due mid-July
