                    CHEERLEADING CONSTITUTION
                                       PREAMBLE
WE, THE CHEERLEADERS OF WINTERSET HIGH SCHOOL, DEDICATE OURSELVES AND OUR SERVICE TO
PROMOTE AND UPHOLD SCHOOL SPIRIT, SPORTSMANSHIP, AND THE HIGHEST STANDARD AS A
CHEERLEADER, STUDENT, AND REPRESENTATIVE OF WINTERSET HIGH SCHOOL. WE WILL ABIDE BY THE
LAWS OF OUR CONSTITUTION, OUR SCHOOL POLICY ATHLETIC CODE, REGULATIONS OF THE IOWA
HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION, AND THE IOWA CHEERLEADING COACHES ASSOCIATION.

v   ARTICLE I: PURPOSE
    ÿ IT SHALL BE THE PURPOSE OF THE CHEERLEADERS TO:
       ß   1) CONTROL CROWD RESPONSE
       ß   2) UNIFY CROWN INVOLVEMENT AT ATHLETIC EVENTS
       ß   3) PROMOTE SPORTSMANSHIP
       ß   4) BUILD MORAL SUPPORT FOR OUR TEAMS
       ß   5) ASSIST COACHES
       ß   6) STRIVE TO BUILD BETTER RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SCHOOLS.

v   ARTICLE II: VALUE OF CHEERLEADING
    ÿ THE VALUES OF CHEERLEADING ARE CONSIDERED AS
       ß   1) CONTRIBUTION TO THE PHYSICAL AND WELL-BEING OF AN INDIVIDUAL
       ß   2) DEVELOPMENT OF LEADERSHIP
       ß   3) DEVELOPMENT OF CREATIVITY
       ß   4) A MEANS OF GAINING RESPECT
       ß   5) DEVELOPMENT OF GOOD CITIZENSHIP
    ÿ EXPRESSION OF THESE VALUES INCLUDE COURTESY, SELF-CONTROL, TOLERANCE,
       GRACIOUSNESS, AND RESPECT.

v   ARTICLE III: CHEERLEADER/SQUAD SELECTION
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   SELECTION OF FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, WRESTLING, AND COMPETITION SQUADS WILL
           TAKE PLACE IN THE SPRING OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR.
    ÿ SECTION 2:
       ß   ALL SQUADS WILL BE CHOSEN FROM ELIGIBLE JUDGES.
    ÿ SECTION 3:
       ß   THE JUDGES WILL BE CHOSEN BY THE COACH AND THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.
    ÿ SECTION 4:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS WILL BE ASSIGNED TO SQUADS BASED ON THE SCORES ACQUIRED AT
           TRYOUTS. NO VIDEO TRYOUTS ACCEPTED, UNLESS PREAUTHORIZED BY COACH AND
           ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.
    ÿ SECTION 5:
       ß   SELECTION OF SQUADS WILL BE POSTED ON A DATE CHOSEN BY THE COACH, FOLLOWING
           TRYOUTS.
    ÿ SECTION 6:
       ß   A SIGNATURE IS REQUIRED INDICATING BOTH, PARENT AND CANDIDATE HAVE RECEIVED
           AND REVIEWED THE CONTENTS OF THE CHEERLEADING CONSTITUTION PRIOR TO
           TRYOUTS.
    ÿ SECTION 7:
       ß   SELECTION OF “STATE CHEERLEADERS” WILL BE DONE AT THE SAME TIME, BUT ARE
           SUBJECT TO CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE SEASON.
v   ARTICLE IV: GRADE REQUIREMENTS
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS MUST MEET ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AS STATED IN THE SCHOOL
           POLICY AND GOOD CONDUCT CODE POLICY. WHS CHEERLEADERS PRIDE THEMSELVES IN
           RECEIVING ACADEMIC AWARDS FROM THE IHSAA.

v   ARTICLE V: PRACTICE
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   CHEER SQUAD MEMBERS MUST PRESENT A WRITTEN EXCUSE UPON FAILURE TO ATTEND
           PRACTICE ON THE DAY YOU ATTEND SCHOOL.
    ÿ SECTION 2:
       ß   PRACTICE TIMES WILL BE SET BY THE COACH AND ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
    ÿ SECTION 3:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AT SCHEDULED PRACTICES. THE COACH MUST BE
           NOTIFIED 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE IF THE CHEERLEADER WILL NOT BE AT PRACTICE-WITH
           THE EXCEPTION OF EXTREME CASES.
    ÿ SECTION 4:
       ß   IF A CHEERLEADER IS GOING TO BE LATE TO A PRACTICE FOR ACADEMIC REASONS, THE
           COACH IS TO BE NOTIFIED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, AND A SIGNED NOTE NEEDS TO BE
           BROUGHT IN ORDER TO BE ADMITTED TO PRACTICE.
    ÿ SECTION 5:
       ß   ATTIRE FOR PRACTICE: PRACTICE UNIFORMS, CHEER SHOES, HAIR OFF SHOULDERS, ALL
           JEWELRY REMOVED, AND NAILS TRIMMED. A CHEERLEADER WITHOUT PROPER ATTIRE
           WILL HAVE CONSEQUENCES THAT WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF AT THE END OF PRACTICE.
    ÿ SECTION 6:
       ß   EXCUSED PRACTICES INCLUDE: FAMILY, SICKNESS, SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES,
           OTHER WILL BE UNDER DISCRETION OF THE COACH. WORK IS NOT EXCUSED!!!

v   ARTICLE VI: UNIFORMS
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   SKIRTS & VESTS WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE SCHOOL
    ÿ SECTION 2:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PURCHASING OTHER ITEMS WHICH COULD
           INCLUDE: SHOES, SOCKS, BRIEFS, BODYSUITS, WARM UPS, ETC.
    ÿ SECTION 3:
       ß   THE ENTIRE UNIFORM MUST BE DRY CLEANED AND RETURNED TO THE COACH ON THE DATE
           SET BY THE COACH OR $1.00 WILL BE CHARGED TO YOU FOR EACH DAY YOU ARE LATE THE
           FIRST WEEK, AND $5.00 A DAY THE FOLLOWING WEEKS.
    ÿ SECTION 4:
       ß   PERMISSION IS NEEDED TO ALTER THE UNIFORMS IN ANY WAY.
    ÿ SECTION 5:
       ß   NO JEWELRY OR ORNAMENTATION CAN BE WORN ON THE CHEERLEADER OR UNIFORM
           WHILE PERFORMING, PER SAFETY RULES OF THE ICCA.
    ÿ SECTION 6:
       ß   MAKE-UP SHALL BE LIMITED. ABSOLUTELY NO GLITTER WILL BE PERMITTED PER THE
           ICCA.
    ÿ SECTION 7:
       ß   UNIFORMS ARE FOR GAME AND EVENT SITUATIONS ONLY. WEARING UNIFORMS IN
           PUBLIC IS PERMITTED ONLY DURING SUPERVISED EVENTS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL. WARM-
           UPS ARE CONSIDERED PART OF YOUR UNIFORM-WEAR THEM WISELY!!

v   ARTICLE VII: RESPONSIBILITIES
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CONDUCT AND GOOD
           SPORTSMANSHIP. THIS IS REQUIRED AT ALL TIMES WHETHER PERFORMING AT AN EVENT,
           BEING A STUDENT, OR A MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY.
    ÿ SECTION 2:
        ß   CHEERLEADERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SUPPORT OF OUR TEAMS, AND RESPECT TO
            VISITING SCHOOLS.
    ÿ   SECTION 3:
        ß   GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
            •   ORGANIZE AND CHEER AT ALL PEP ASSEMBLIES
            •   CHEER AT HOME AND AWAY EVENTS AS YOU ARE SCHEDULED
            •   ATTEND SPORTING EVENTS FOR WHICH YOU DO NOT CHEER SUCH AS VOLLEYBALL AND
                CROSS COUNTRY
            •   PREPARE AND PERFORM AT SPECIAL EVENTS: HOMECOMING, WINTERFEST, PEP
                RALLIES, FUNDRAISERS, ETC.
            •   MAKE POSTERS/SIGNS TO SUPPORT ALL ATHLETIC TEAMS.
            •   ATTEND CLINICS CHOSEN BY THE COACH
            •   BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CROWD AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
            •   ASSIST ALL COACHES AS NECESSARY
            •   UPHOLD AND ABIDE BY ALL ELEMENTS OF THE CHEERLEADING CONSTITUTION
    ÿ   SECTION 4:
        ß   CHEERLEADERS WILL LEAD THE SCHOOL SONG!
    ÿ   SECTION 5:
        ß   IF A CHEERLEADER DROPS FROM A SQUAD, SHE/HE WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DROPPED
            FROM ALL CHEERLEADING FROM THE CURRENT SEASON. THE CHEERLEADING LETTER
            WILL ALSO BE WITHHELD. THE CHEERLEADER MAY BE ALLOWED TO TRYOUT FOR THE
            NEXT YEAR UNDER THE DISCRETION OF COACH AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, BUT WILL
            NOT BE ALLOWED TO TRYOUT FOR THE COMPETITION SQUAD.

v   ARTICLE VIII: CONDUCT
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS SHOULD COOPERATE AT ALL TIMES WITH THE COACH, OTHER SQUAD
           MEMBERS, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, AND OTHER TEAM COACHES.
    ÿ SECTION 2:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS WILL CONDUCT THEMSELVES IN THE HIGHEST MANNER AT ALL TIMES
           (SCHOOL, WORK, COMMUNITY, GAMES, ETC) YOUR EVERY MOVE IS SCRUTENIZED BY PEOPLE
           YOU MAY NOT KNOW. YOU ARE HELD IN A HIGHER REGARD THAN YOU MIGHT EXPECT. YOU
           MUST BE WILLING TO ACCEPT AND PERFORM AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF WHS AT ALL
           TIMES.
    ÿ SECTION 3:
       ß   CONDUCT WILL IN UNIFORM (FORMAL OR INFORMAL), WILL BE AT THE HIGHEST OF
           STANDARDS. THIS DIRECTLY PERTAINS TO YOUR BEHAVIOR DURING A GAME TO REFS,
           DURING INTERMISSIONS WITH FRIENDS, ON THE BUS AND EVEN DURING SCHOOL.
    ÿ SECTION 4:
       ß   WHEN ATTENDING, BUT NO PARTICIPATING IN AN EVENT, A CHEERLEADER WILL SIT IN
           THE CHEERING SECTION AND BE ATTENTATIVE TO YOUR FELLOW CHEERLEADERS. YOU
           MUST CHEER ALONG WITH THEM AS IF YOU WERE CHEERING.

v   ARTICLE IX: GAMES
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS NOTIFY THE COACH ASAP AND ALSO MUST PRESENT A WRITTEN EXCUSE,
           SIGNED BY A PARENT, UPON FAILURE TO ATTEND A GAME.
    ÿ SECTION 2:
       ß   EACH CHEERLEADER MUST BE PRESENT AT SCHOOL AS PER SCHOOL POLICY IN ORDER TO BE
           ELIGIBLE TO CHEER.
    ÿ SECTION 3:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS WILL BE AT THE GAME/MEET 45 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF
           THE SCHEDULED EVEN, OR AS DESIGNATED BY THE COACH.
    ÿ SECTION 4:
       ß   THE SQUAD WILL WELCOME THE VISITING CHEERLEADERS, SHOW THEM THE RESTROOMS,
           TELL THEM WHERE TO PUT THEIR THINGS, ETC.
    ÿ SECTION 5:
        ß   CHEERLEADERS SHALL NOT VISIT WITH THE CROWD, SIT IN THE STANDS OR LEAVE THE
            SQUAD DURING THE GAME.
    ÿ   SECTION 6:
        ß   DURING GAMES, CHEERLEADERS ARE TO RETURN TO THE CHEER SITE WITH 3 MINUTES
            REMAINING ON THE HALF-TIME CLOCK.
    ÿ   SECTION 7:
        ß   CHEERLEADERS MAY NOT EAT, SNACK, DRINK OR CHEW GUM WHILE ON THE FIELD OR
            FLOOR (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF WATER AT HOT GAMES.)
    ÿ   SECTION 8:
        ß   CHEERLEADERS WILL RIDE TO AWAY EVENTS ON SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION AS
            DESIGNATED BY THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. BE PRESENT AT SCHOOL 15 MINUTES BEFORE
            THE SCHEDULED DEAPARTURE TIME.
    ÿ   SECTION 9:
        ß   CHEERLEADERS RIDING THE PLAYERS’ BUS ARE UNDER THE RULES AND EXPECTATIONS OF
            THE COACHES AND WILL FOLLOW THEM.
    ÿ   SECTION 10:
        ß   CHEERLEADERS WILL RETURN FROM SCHOOL EVENTS ON SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION
            UNLESS A SIGNED NOTE HAS BEEN RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE EVENT, APPROVAL MUST BE
            GIVEN BY THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. THE PARENT MUST NOTIFY THE COACH IN CHARGE, IN
            PERSON, AFTER THE GAME.
    ÿ   SECTION 11:
        ß   **CHEERLEADERS WILL BE INELIGIBLE TO CHEER AT AN EVENT FOLLOWING AN
            UNEXCUSED ABSENCE!**

v   ARTICLE X: GAME CONDUCT
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   DO YOUR JOB: CHEER-LEAD!!
    ÿ SECTION 2:
       ß   CHEERLEADERS WILL STAND IN FORMATION AT ATTENTION EVEN WHEN NOT
           PERFORMING A CHEER.
    ÿ SECTION 3:
       ß   TALKING SHOULD BE VERY MINIMAL
    ÿ SECTION 4:
       ß   LOOKS, ACTIONS, OR COMMENTS TOWARD REFS, VISITING TEAMS, FANS, CHEERLEADERS,
           ETC., WILL RESULT IN BEING TAKEN OUT OF THE GAME AND SITTING WITH THE COACHES
           WHILE THE OTHERS CHEER FOR THE REST OF THE GAME.

v   ARTICLE XI: COMPETITION SQUAD
    ÿ SECTION 1:
       ß   A COMPETITION SQUAD WILL CONSIST OF ABOUT 16 MEMBERS AND TWO ALTERNATES. –
           THIS IS ONLY AN ESTIMATE, NUMBERS WILL DEPEND ON HOW MANY WE HAVE AT
           TRYOUTS.
    ÿ SECTION 2:
       ß   THIS SQUAD WILL BE CHOSEN BY MEANS OF TRYOUTS, HELD AT THE SAME TIME AS
           TRYOUTS FOR SEASON SQUADS. THIS SQUAD CAN BE MADE UP OF ANY NUMBER OF
           FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS AND SENIORS.
    ÿ SECTION 3:
       ß   THERE ARE NO MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO BE ON THIS SQUAD.
    ÿ SECTION 4:
       ß   TRYOUT MATERIAL WILL BE CHOSEN BY THE COACH. NO VIDEO TRYOUTS WILL BE
           ACCEPTED-UNLESS PREAUTHORIZED BY COACH AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.
    ÿ SECTION 5:
       ß   ALL PRACTICES FOR COMPETITION SQUAD ARE MANDATORY!!! THE SAME RULES APPLY TO
           EXCUSED/UNEXCUSED ABSENCES AS REGULAR SEASON PRACTICES.
    ÿ SECTION 6:
       ß   ALL MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES MUST ATTEND SUMMER CAMP WHERE THEY WILL
           LEARN THEIR ROUTINE. IF A MEMBER CHOOSES NOT TO ATTEND CAMP, THEY WILL
           GIVE UP THEIR SPOT ON THE SQUAD AND THEN BE AN ALTERNATE.
    ÿ    SECTION 7:
         ß   THIS COMPETITION SQUAD WILL PERFORM AT THE STATE COMPETITION ON A SET DATE
             AND TIME. THEY WILL ALSO PERFORM AT OTHER COMPETITIONS AROUND THE STATE.

v   ARTICLE XI: REGULATION OF THE RULES – VIOLATIONS ARE RGULATED AS FOLLOWS:

    1.  USE OF ALCOHOL, DRUGS, TOBACCO
            a.   SCHOOL POLICIES WILL BE FOLLOWED
    2. NOT PASSING 3 OR MORE CLASSES
            a.   SCHOOL POLICIES WILL BE FOLLOWED
    3. UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM GAME/MEET
            a.   1ST OFFENSE‡ONE WEEK GAME/MEET SUSPENSION
            b. 2ND OFFENSE‡DISMISSAL FROM SQUAD
             **PARENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE**
    4. UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM PRACTICE OR OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
            a.   1ST OFFENSE‡ONE GAME/MEET SUSPENSION
            b. 2ND OFFENSE‡DISMISSAL FROM SQUAD
             **PARENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE**
    5. EXCUSED ABSENCE FROM GAME/MEET/PRACTICE
            a.   1ST AND 2ND OFFENSE‡WARNING
            b. 3RD AND 4TH OFFENSE‡ONE GAME/MEET SUSPENSION
            c.   5TH AND 6TH OFFENSE‡ONE WEEK GAME/MEET SUSPENSION

                 V-SITS, ETC.
    11. UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT
            a.   1ST OFFENSE‡REMOVAL FROM GAME/MEET YOU ARE CHEERING
            b. 2ND OFFENSE‡TWO WEEK GAME/MEET SUSPENSION
            c.   3RD OFFENSE‡DISMISSAL FROM SQUAD
    12. ADDITIONAL SUSPENSIONS WILL BE ASSIGNED AT THE COACH’S DISCRETION FOR OTHER
        MINOR OR MAJOR DISCIPLINARY PROBLEMS WITHIN CHEERLEADING, SCHOOL, AND/OR
        COMMUNITY.

    **DISMISSAL FROM THE SQUAD WILL AUTOMATICALLY OCCURE AFTER THE ACCUMULATION OF 8
    TOTAL GAME SUSPENSIONS, REGARDLESS OF HWO THE ACCUMULATION ACCURS (EITHER THROUGH
    SINGLE GAME SUSPENSIONS OR WEEKLY SUSPENSIONS.)**
v   LETTERING SYSTEM
    ÿ EVERY CHEERLEADER WILL EARN A LETTER UPON THE DISCRETION OF THE COACH AND THESE
        FACTORS:
        ß  IF SHE/HE DISPLAYS A POSITIVE ATTITUDE DURING EACH AND EVERY OPPORTUNITY
           AVAILABLE.
        ß  BEING COOPERATIVE AND BEING RESPECTFUL TO THEIR FELLOW CHEERLEADERS AND
           COACHES AT ALL TIMES.
        ß  IF A CHEERLEADER GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT IS EXPECTED.
        ß  ONLY UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES WILL A LETTER BE WITHHELD.
