Dear Candidates and Parents,

Thank you for your interest in the 2009 – 2010 Seneca Valley cheerleading teams. As a member of either the
Varsity or JV team, you can show your Seneca Valley pride through performances, exhibitions, competitions,
and community events.

The qualifications to become a member of either squad are as follows: Maintain a 2.0 minimum GPA
requirement, you must have pep and enthusiasm, want to be involved, enjoying performing, be ready to work
hard, and ready to assume the responsibility of representing SVHS!

Cheering can be a truly rewarding experience, but it is also a large time commitment and can be costly. These
are teams that require earnest efforts and sincere dedication. Be aware of these facts as you prepare to take
on the responsibilities of representing Seneca Valley High School.

If selected to be a SVHS cheerleader, there are many specific responsibilities, obligations, and behavioral
expectations that your child must accept in order to qualify for and to remain part of the squad.

Parent Responsibilities:
 Read the entire packet and be certain that you fully understand the rules and regulations that govern
cheerleading and / or have asked the coaches to clarify any parts you do not understand.
 Review the STUDENT ATHLETE HANDBOOK (on SVHS Athletics web page) and discuss the rules and
expectations with your child and be certain that your child has a complete understanding of his/her
responsibilities. (Hint: Your required Student – Parent Athletic Participation Contract and Parent
Permission Form is in this handbook.)
 Make sure that each form has been filled out completely and correctly. All health and permission forms
are available on the SVHS website under Athletics. www.senecavalleyhighschool.com
 If your child does not already have a valid physical on file, make an appointment now and have the
forms completed. Your child can not participate in clinics or tryouts without a current physical on file.
 Parents are required to help with concessions and will be required to sign up at the start of the fall
       season.

Parent Requirements: If your child makes a cheerleading squad, one or both parents and the cheerleader is
required to attend a parent meeting on Monday, June 8th at 7pm in the SVHS Cafeteria. The cheerleader
must also attend. At the meeting we will go over parent and athlete expectations for the season, anticipated
schedules, and we will discuss camp. You will also be asked to make a payment towards cheerleading attire
and camp.

Team Member Participation Standards, Expectations and Responsibilities:
Athlete expectations – Our expectations for the girls on these teams are very high. We expect them to
conduct themselves appropriately at all times. They are representatives of the school, the team, and the
coaching staff and as such we expect them to behave as young ladies at all times. Violation of these
expectations will result in disciplinary action, up to and including suspension and/or removal from the
team.

Some things to note:
 Foul language will not be tolerated.
   No excessive PDA’s
 Smoking, alcohol, drug use are prohibited at all times – both on and off campus.
 Courtesy to team mates, school staff, and all students is expected at all times.
 MySpace and Facebook pages will be periodically checked for inappropriate content.
Athlete responsibilities – Those chosen are expected to be dedicated to the teams. Their team WILL take
priority over their other activities. Absences affect the teams’ ability to progress, and unlike other teams we do
not have the luxury of substitutions.
 Practices and games are mandatory. You will be on time and ready to participate.
 The only excused absences from practices are for illness that required the athlete to miss school or for
school events that result in a grade.
 Excessive absences or tardiness, regardless of reason, will result in disciplinary action including
suspension and up to removal from the team.

Fundraising: Each member of the SVHS Varsity & JV cheerleading squads will be required to participate in
fundraising. We anticipate three fundraisers this season. The teams NEED to supplement their current
uniform supply. However, we don’t have the money on hand to purchase them and we will need to raise the
money to buy them. We also need to supplement our current supply of cheer mats. Each athlete will be
responsible for fundraising at least $200. At this time we have three fundraisers planned for the season as
follows:
 Hosting of one-week youth summer camp week of June 22nd. (Varsity girls will be required to work).
      Pizza/cookie dough fundraiser
      Car Wash

Summer Camp – Both the Varsity and JV squads will be attending summer camp. Camp dates are August 7th
to August 10th. Camp will be held at UMBC. Parent transportation will be necessary. Camp cost is $275
payable in increments of $50 and $225. While all athletes are strongly encouraged to attend, summer camp is
optional and ability or inability to attend will not affect decisions on squad placement.

Thank you for your interest in joining one of the finest cheerleading programs in the county. If you have any
questions regarding the packet or tryouts, please feel free to contact Varsity Coach, Lynn Ellis via e-mail at
svhscheerleading@aol.com or by phone at 301-768-8854.

General Information: Clinic dates for this year are May 28th, 29th, June 1st, and 2nd. Clinics will be held in the
school gyms. At the clinics prospective team members will learn material that will be performed during tryouts.
Clinics are closed to spectators. Tryouts will be Wednesday June 3rd starting at 6:00 p.m. going until the
last group finishes. You must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. This will be a closed tryout and no one will be
permitted in the gym.

Sincerely,

The Seneca Valley High School Cheerleading Staff
