                      Undergraduate Chemistry Practical Course

       Allocation of Students to College Groups and Laboratories

                                                        2009‐2010


This page gives details of the allocation of students in the Oxford Chemistry course to particular laboratories for their
practical work. Here is how to find out in which lab you will be working:

         1. Find your College Group

         Students at the 28 colleges which accept chemists are placed into one of three college groups for the purposes
         of chemistry practical work, as follows:

                  Group A

                             [ Mon / Tues ] Lincoln, SEH, St Peter's, Trinity, Wadham.
                             [ Thurs / Fri ] Brasenose, Jesus, Oriel, St Hilda's, St John's.

                  Group B

                             [ Mon / Tues ] Balliol, Corpus Christi, Hertford, LMH, Magdalen.
                             [ Thurs / Fri ] Exeter, Pembroke, St Anne's, Queen’s, St Hugh's

                  Group C

                             [ Mon / Tues ] Christ Church, New, Somerville, Worcester.
                             [ Thurs / Fri ] Keble, Merton, St Catherine’s, University.

         2. Determine where your College Group will work

         Notes:

         1) It is expected that the PTCL and ICL Teaching Labs will be closed during Trinity weeks 6‐8 inclusive
         and that the DP Teaching Lab will be closed Trinity weeks 7 and 8.

         2) Students can collect their ICL course books from the service room on the Monday of their first week
         in the laboratory (week 1 or week 5). Students are not constrained to working either Monday/Tuesday
         or Thursday/Friday.

         Notes:

          1) All 3rd year students can work in the ICL or PTCL at any time the laboratories are open, subject to the
availability of experiments.




3. Check the days of the week

In some laboratories you will be expected to work on either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, so
note which days of the week are shown for your college group in step 1.
        4. Make a note of the times of Introductory Talks

        Introductory talks take place at the start of most courses. Attendance at these talks, whose times are shown
        below, is mandatory.

        1st year, ALL students in Monday/Tuesday groups:

        Monday week 1 Michaelmas term, 12.00, PTCL main lecture theatre, followed by afternoon tours


        1st year, ALL students in Thursday/Friday groups:

        Thursday week 1 Michaelmas term, 12.15, PTCL main lecture theatre, followed by afternoon tours




        PTCL 2nd year must attend any one of the following talks:

        Monday week 1 Michaelmas term, 1.00, PTCL John Rowlinson Seminar Room

        Tuesday week 1 Michaelmas term, 1.00, PTCL John Rowlinson Seminar Room

        Tuesday week 1 Michaelmas term, 2.00, PTCL John Rowlinson Seminar Room




        PTCL 3rd year must attend any one of the following talks (same time/location as 2nd year):

        Monday week 1 Michaelmas term, 1.00, PTCL John Rowlinson Seminar Room
