IV. Masterful Coaching Masterful Coaching © 2001 1 The Coaching Mindset The higher you raise the bar of excellence, the more you need coaching  Olympic athletes  Performing arts  Business Why do most managers receive little or no coaching? Masterful Coaching © 2001 2 The Business Case for Masterful Coaching Coaching is a strategic necessity in a high performance environment     Talent Wars—Leadership Supply Hyper Competition Ever Increasing Customer Demands High Velocity Global Environment What is the business case for coaching at your company? For you? Masterful Coaching © 2001 3 4 Big Myths that Prevent a Coaching Culture The old conversation about coaching: “Coaching is therapy based.” 1. Coaching is for losers, not winners, “It’s not my job.” “I can think of some people around here who really need it.” 2. Coaching is about fixing what’s wrong with people. “We coach people through leadership competencies, 360 feedback.” 3. Coaching is about development for the indefinite future “Performance and development are separate activities.” 4. Coaching is for the individual “It happens during the yearly performance appraisal.” Masterful Coaching © 2001 4 What is Masterful Coaching? We need to generate a new conversation about coaching that is accomplishment based.  Coaching is for “winners” who want to realize what’s really possible for them and their business  If you are a leader, you are a coach and teacher  Coaching is about creating the impossible future, not just filling gaps  Coaches inspire people to achieve what’s impossible, not predictable  Coaching integrates performance & development for today and tomorrow  Coaches expand people’s ability to produce extraordinary results  Coaching involves both individuals and groups  Coaching is top-down, bottom-up, across the network 5 Masterful Coaching © 2001 Coaching is for Winners Earl Woods asked me to take Tiger to the next level-Butch Harmon Butch, thanks for being a dedicated coach, teacher and thank you for making a breakthrough possible for me. Despite being a superstar at $6.6M year, Tiger Woods committed to a “breakthrough” in his game. Masterful Coaching © 2001 6 Masterful Coaches  Expand your ability to be an extraordinary leader  Being a contribution, being charismatic, being powerful, being courageous, being an enroller, being racket free, being in integrity, being peaceful  Unearth your passion and bring it to your work, support you to design a game worth playing  This starts with unleashing what people passionately care about.  Give people the power to do what was previously considered difficult or impossible  This involves declaring ambitious aspirations possible and engaging in a series of conversations designed to move that possibility into a reality.  They focus on transformational learning vs. transactional learning  Transformation learning is an alteration in context that shapes who you are being, your thinking, and actions so as to produce results not currently possible. Transactional learning involves tips, techniques 7 Masterful Coaching © 2001 Masterful Coaches inspire people to take a stand for a new future. A goal is something to get to, a future is something that you create from MASTERFUL COACHING How you are being History Your horizon of possibility The social context that shapes your particular perspective, beliefs, & assumptions. Your view of yourself and what’s possible, and achievable for you based on what’s happened and what you think it means Winning Strategy Personal & . Business Your winning strategy is your unconscious success formula. How you compensate for what’s not possible. How you maximize winning, avoid losing. The source of your success and limitations Creating the Predictable Future The future you inherited by staying within your historical horizon of possibilities, winning formula, unwritten rules of the game, facts and circumstances. What you do to improve upon the possible by reacting to the past. Impossible Future This starts with developing a point of view about the future, and the opportunities in change. Explore alternative possibilities, Declare an ambitious aspiration you can passionately engage in. Masterful Coaching © 2001 8 Are you creating the future, or being swept along by history?  What is the historical background that you came from? What were your formative work experiences?  How does that shape, limit, define your horizon of possibilities?  To what extent does history shape, limit, define how you show up as a leader, manager?  What are some alternative possibilities?  To what extent is history limiting what’s possible for your company?  What would be some alternative possibilities? Masterful Coaching © 2001 9 What’s your winning strategy? A winning strategy is a strength that becomes a limitation  What have you done to be successful in your career?  For example, I look good for the boss. I use my “smarts”, intuition and experience to make quick decisions Be right, make others wrong. Here comes the judge  What actions do you take that give you power?   How does your Winning Strategy limit you?  A winning strategy is a strength that becomes a limitation. 10 Masterful Coaching © 2001 Masterful coaches engage people in creating new possibilities, in breaking the grip of history You invent the impossible future by declaring an ambitious aspiration and by declaring that fulfilling that future is the game you are playing in life What future would you create if only it were possible? Stretch def. of your biz and yourself Commit, Take a stand Acting from the future vs. just pushing for results Declare an ambitious aspiration possible Invent alternative possibilities Ask who do I need to be in the matter? What actions? Bold promises? Challenging time frames? I am committed to the possibility of . . . I am committed to giving up . . . Masterful Coaching © 2001 11 The only way to alter history and create a new future is through your declaration  You make the impossible happen through a series of specific declarations  These declarations generate a reinvention paradigm that allows you to reclaim the power you have given to the past, your winning strategies, defensive routines, etc.  A bold declaration has the power to create a new future as a possibility just because you said it  We declare these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal and that they are endowed with certain unalienable rights…  You declare the impossible possible (without evidence of proof) than commit your whole self to transform the possibility into a reality  As you identity begins to shift from your personality & position to your commitment, you become the kind of leader who is a clearing for the future to happen 12 Masterful Coaching © 2001 A masterful coach empowers people to alter history by declaring an extraordinary future The only way to alter history is by The power of your declaration  I am committed to the possibility of (stretch your definition of your business  I am committed to the possibility of (stretch your definition of yourself)  For example-making a difference For example- Being in control, looking good  I am committed to giving up (winning strategies)  Masterful Coaching © 2001 13 Masterful Coaching is about altering who people are being, their “winning strategies” and actions Context History, Horizon of Possibility, Act, Winning Strategy, Triple Loop Learning Mismatch or Error Your Goals How You Are Being How You Are Thinking Your Actions How you show up Unintended Results What do people need to do differently? What’s the winning strategy? How do people need to think differently? How do people need to be different? Masterful Coaching © 2001 14 Masterful Coaching-- The Method™ How are the roles of a coach in today’s business world changing?  For leaders at all levels  How to achieve extraordinary and tangible results with individuals and groups  Applied to formal and informal coaching relationships Masterful Coaching © 2001 15 Masterful Coaching - The Method™ Who you are is a leader, coach, teacher I. II. Declare an Impossible Future- and near term goals Put Out Your Teachable Point of View III. Invest in Relationships with Others IV. Plan Stretch Goals Collaboratively V. Provide Feedback and Learning VI. Forward the Action—Right Now! Masterful Coaching © 2001 16 People define specific leadership challenges and business challenges and jump into action  The coach then asks, what would success look like?  What are the critical success factors for reaching it  What’s missing that if provided would make a difference?  What the opening for action in the next 30 days Masterful Coaching © 2001 17 Coaching is not just about setting goals but giving feedback that rips the blinders off  Leaders in business set goals but unfortunately the higher they go in the organization the less they get feedback  Yet are often like planes flying without instrument that allow them to navigate  Its not the things that leaders see that causes them to crash and burn the 3-4 mistakes they make that they don’t see  Part of the role of a masterful coach is to provide feedback that allows them to see where they are off course and put in the correction Masterful Coaching © 2001 18 The 6 Cap Coaching Conversation System A System for More Effective 1:1 and Group Interactions Masterful Coaching © 2001 19 Six Coaching Caps  Making Assessments (opinions) Here is an assessment of where the business is today. Here is my assessment of your performance, development this year.  Declaring Possibilities: What’s really possible here beyond your current beliefs? How can we stretch our definition of the business? How can you stretch yourself?  Generating Action: Getting commitments. What’s your promise? I have a request. What’s your offer?  Drawing Others Out: How are you looking at this? are you thinking about this? What do you know about this? How  Reframing: What’s another way to look at it? How does  Teaching and Advising: Lecturing, giving tips, techniques Masterful Coaching © 2001 your thinking need to change? Here’s what you know. What do you need to learn? 20 Which Cap Do I Have On? Which Cap Do I Need to Put on Next? Masterful Coaches change the conversation according to the situation  Most people don’t distinguish the different kinds of coaching conversations  They tend to get stuck in one kind of coaching conversation, such as telling others what to do  The six cap system helps you distinguish which conversation is needed and to move smoothly from one to another Masterful Coaching © 2001 21 Robert Hargrove Mobile: 001-617-513 5512 Office: 001-617-739-3300 Robert.Hargrove@MasterfulCoaching.com Masterful Coaching © 2001 22 It is your racket that keeps you from being powerful  What happened?  What’s the story (interpretation)?  Formation of your racket:    Who are you blaming? (decisions you made about yourself)? What are you complaining about? What are you pretending that things are better than they really are? Masterful Coaching © 2001 23
