To the BOE, As a concerned parent and citizen I have a few requests. 1) Please have hard copies of the changes to the proposed budget available for the March 9th meeting. It may not be ecologically correct, but is necessary to have an informed public. 2) Leave intact those aspects of the educational system that directly impact the students. Please note these include the following: -#1 Kindergarten Paraprofessionals -#5 Adult Education -#6 Learning Disabilities Teacher -#9 All Before and After School courtesy bussing -#11 Reading Recovery -#12 Gifted & Talented -#13 Bunker Hill -#14 Reduction of Fine Arts -#15 Reduction in Athletics -#18 Franklin Middle School Schedule: 10 to 9 period day -#20 Pre-Kindergarten -#21 Academic Support -#22 Half Day Kindergarten 3) Look at possibilities for top down decreases, i.e. non-mandated administrative costs. This may include looking at higher salaried positions that might be unnecessary or overhead expenses that can be reduced. (For example, not spending $20,000 on a report that didn't tell us anything that we didn't already know or on a behavioral improvement program based on positive feedback that should already be an integral part of any educational system, and therefore there should be no need to have to pay consultants exorbitant fees to tell people to be decent to each other!) 4) Ask the community for creative solutions to help cut costs. Over this weekend I heard several creative solutions. One was a self-sustaining dramatic arts program (i.e. the productions would more than support themselves). Another idea was expanding the volunteer programs to have adults who can help cover larger classes. This program can include targeting the growing senior community in town, many who have skills to share with the younger generation. This type of program could benefit the students as well as build community support. We need a Board of Education that is responsive to the community and for the benefit of the young people who deserve the best educational system we can possible give them.
