FRIEZE PROJECTS
FULL DETAILS
ANNOUNCED
Frieze Projects, Frieze Talks,
Frieze Education, The Cartier Award
Complete details of the curatorial programme for Frieze Art Fair 2005 (21-24 October) have been
announced today by Directors Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp.

Frieze Projects
Frieze Projects, curated by Polly Staple, has commissioned both major international artists and emerging
artists to create work at the UK’s largest contemporary art fair. Frieze Projects is expanding this year to
encompass physically ambitious sculptural installations, film and video commissions – screened in The
Artists Cinema – a daily tour programme and an off-site performance event.
Andrea Zittel is joined from California at the fair by Lisa Anne Auerbach and fellow members of their hiking
club Interlopers HC. The hikers will be camping at the fair as well as setting off on daily hikes across
London. Also on-site, emerging artist Michael Beutler uses lo-fi resources for a major new sculptural
installation, and Germaine Kruip creates a subtly spectacular light piece for the fair’s monumental entrance
corridor.
Matthieu Laurette, Martha Rosler, Richard Wentworth and Jay Chung & Q Takeki Maeda respond to the
invitation to lead a tour in and around Frieze Art Fair with strikingly diverse results.
Ian Wilson presents one of his legendary discussions.
Henrik Hakånsson’s work is the first off-site Frieze Projects commissioned event. A goldfinch will give a
solo recital at the Royal Academy of Music. Frieze Art Fair visitors are invited to become players in this
filmed performance.
Important additions to the fair are the three Frieze Projects film commissions from British sculptors Cathy
Wilkes, Roger Hiorns and Donald Urquhart which will be premiered in the specially constructed Artists
Cinema. It is the first time these artists have worked in the medium. The Artists Cinema is a joint Frieze
Projects/LUX collaboration and will show a curated programme of film and video alongside the Frieze
Projects commissions. Highlights of the programme will also tour key UK galleries in Spring 2006.

Frieze Projects are presented in association with Cartier.

Frieze Talks
Frieze Talks is a prestigious series of panel discussions, conversations and keynote lectures held daily in the
Guardian Auditorium. It features leading art professionals debating key issues in collecting, criticism,
curating and art production.

Among the high profile speakers appearing in 2005 are Michael Bracewell, Michael Craig-Martin, Thomas
Crow, Zaha Hadid, Linda Nochlin, Walid Raad, Jacques Rancière and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Frieze Education
Frieze Education has been an important part of Frieze Art Fair since its inception. In 2005 Frieze Projects
and Camden Arts Centre, London are collaborating on an education programme for young people
aged16-18.

The Cartier Award
The Cartier Award for an emerging artist is a major new initiative by Frieze Projects in collaboration with
Delfina Studio Trust, London. Artists are invited to propose a new work to be realised at Frieze Art Fair 2006
which will be produced under the auspices of Frieze Projects. Projects may take the form of site-specific
installation; performance; film and video and print publications.

The Cartier Award is open to emerging artists within 5 years of graduating from a BA/MA or international
equivalent. The Cartier Award is sponsored by Cartier and supported by Arts & Business.

Frieze Projects, Talks and Education are commissioned under the auspices of Frieze Foundation which is
generously supported by the Arts Council England and the Culture 2000 programme of the European
Union (2005 - 07), in association with the International Artists Studio Programme in Sweden (Iaspis),
Stockholm; Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam (SMBA); Project, Dublin; Platform Garanti Art Center,
Istanbul; and Sala Rekalde, Bilbao.
