1   Important read this first
     1.1. Before going further: please make sure you have your Windows system CD or floppy
                                            disks with you.
      1.2. Extro (the server) may be taken down on any Friday morning for software and / or
          hardware maintenance. You may not be able to access the Internet during this time.

2   Setting up a Dial-Up Connection
    2.1. From the Desktop, Click on "Start", "Settings", "Network and Dial-up Connections".




    2.2. This will open up the "Network and Dial-up Connections" window (See Fig 1-2 below). There will
         be an Icon labelled "Make New Connection". (If you have used Dial-up Networking in the past,
         there may also be other icons).

   2.3. Double click the icon "Make New Connection". This will start the Network connection Wizard.
        See Fig 1-3 below.




   2.4. You will be asked to select a "Network Connection Type".
   2.5. Choose "Dial-up to the Internet" (See Fig 1-4 below) and click "Next".




   2.6. Next you will be asked whether you already have an Internet account.
   2.7. Select "I want to set up my Internet connection manually"(Fig 1-5) and Click "Next".




   2.8. Next the "Setting Up" page appears
   2.9. Select "I connect through a phone line and modem" (Fig 1-6) and Click "Next".

   2.10.       If your modem is not installed: This will start the "Install New Modem" window
   2.11.       Follow the directions to have Windows detect and install your modem.
   2.12.       If your modem is already installed: This will bring up the "Step 1 of 3." window

   2.13.       Uncheck the box marked "Use area code and dialling rules".
   2.14.       Click the "Advanced" button and the "Advanced Connection Properties" window will
        appear.

   2.15.       Ensure all options appear exactly as they do above (Fig 1-8) then click on the
        "Addresses" tab (See Fig 1-9).




   2.16.       In the area for "IP Address" select "Internet service provider automatically provides one"

   2.17.       In the area for "DNS server address", select "Always use the following"
                          Primary DNS server               129.78.64.1

                          Alternate DNS server             129.78.64.2


   2.18.       Click "OK" and then "Next".
   2.19.       This should bring up the "Step 2 of 3..." window




   2.20.       Enter your login name in the Box marked "User name".
   2.21.       Enter your password in the box marked "Password".
   2.22.       Click "Next"
   2.23.       This should bring up the "Step 3 of 3" window.




   2.24.       Name the connection. (It's not really important what you name it, but it is helpful to
        name it in a way that reminds you of what it is) see Fig 1-11.
   2.25.       Click "Next"
   2.26.       The settings for dialling into Sydney University are now complete.
   2.27.       You should now configure your Proxy settings so you can get websites outside of the
        University of Sydney.
