Durham To Hold 21st Annual Peace Officers Memorial Service
National Police Week May 13-19, 2007

Durham, NC – On Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 11 a.m. the Durham Fraternal Order of Police and Durham law
enforcement agencies will hold a Peace Officers Memorial Service at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church,
504 W. Chapel Hill Street, Durham. Durham Police Chief Steve Chalmers is the keynote speaker.

The memorial service honors the sacrifice of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and their
families, as well as pays tribute to current, reserve, and retired law enforcement officers. (See attachment for
information on slain Durham officers). Officers from the City of Durham Police Department, Durham County
Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina Central University Police Department, Duke University Police Department, and
North Carolina State Highway Patrol will participate in the program, along with City and County officials.

Following the service a luncheon at the church will be provided by the Durham Fraternal Order of Police for the
slain officers’ immediate families, service participants, and retired law enforcement officers and spouses.
Additional guests are welcome to participate in the luncheon at a cost of $5 per person. (Meal includes barbecue
and fried chicken). Lunch reservations should be made in advance by calling Chaplain Phil Wiggins at 383-4820 or
517-9043. Payment can be made at the door, but advance reservations are required.

National Police Week
Across the United States Peace Officers Memorial Day is officially designated as May 15 as part of National Police
Week festivities. In October 1962 then U.S. President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 that also
encourages the “governments of the States and communities and the people of the United States to observe such
day and week with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including the display at half-staff of the flag of the United
States.”

                                    Durham Officers to be Memorialized
Among those to be honored at Durham’s 21st Annual Peace Officers Memorial Service are the following Durham law
enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty:

DURHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT

Gill P. Cates
On May 28, 1913, Sergeant Cates was shot and killed.

Ronald A. Gill
On June 10, 1933, Officer Gill was shot and killed.

J. Clarence Price
On December 3, 1939, Officer Price died due to injuries from an on-duty motorcycle wreck.

Larry Douglas Bullock
On April 29, 1976, Investigator Larry Bullock was shot and killed.

Gary Eugene Fletcher
On February 16, 1978, Public Safety Officer Gary Fletcher died from injuries sustained while on a fire call.

Billy T. Gregory
On April 24, 2004 Officer Gregory suffered a heart attack during Selective Enforcement Team training.

Please Note That…
Police Officer Charles J. Callemyn will be memorialized at the North Carolina Peace Officers Memorial Service, Friday, May
11, 2007 at Grace Baptist Church (1401 N. College Road in Wilmington, NC) at 11a.m. On Saturday, February 17, 2007
Officer Charles J. Callemyn, 33, was killed in a single vehicle accident while responding to back up another officer on a traffic
stop. Officer Callemyn lost control of his vehicle on Holloway Street and struck the underpass of North Carolina Highway 70
at approximately 3 am. Officer Callemyn had served with the Durham Police Department for 2 years and had previously served
with served with the Duke University Police Department for 6 years. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran and a
United States Army Reserves veteran of the War on Terror. He is survived by his wife and two sons.



DURHAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Deputy Will Hall
On October 18, 1929, Deputy Will Hall was shot and killed.

Deputy Onus Hall
On July 17, 1939, Deputy Onus Hall was shot and killed. He was the brother of Deputy Will Hall who had been killed in the
line of duty 10 years earlier.

Deputy William Thomas “Tommy” Land
On October 15, 1971, Deputy Tommy Land was shot and killed.
