LETTER OF INTENT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES LETTERS OF INTENT MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN 8/01/08 AT 5PM CST LOIs must be submitted on-line at http://childrensdiscovery.org/. First-time users must register by going to Application Submission -> login here -> Register. Returning users may click on “My Submissions” and use their previously obtained user name and password. Click on “Submit Letter of Intent.” Competitive renewals of existing CDI awards will be considered if the research proposed endeavors to answer questions of great importance to child health and to significantly further the work outlined in the initial award. Investigators submitting a LOI as a competitive renewal should follow the instructions listed below with one exception: the title should match that of the existing award and should be followed by an asterisk *. Please follow the instructions below and contact the CDI administrator at cdi@kids.wustl.edu with inquiries concerning submission. Format Specifications: 1. The applicant’s name must be listed as the header in the upper right corner of all documents. 2. Documents should be single-spaced with one-half inch margins and Arial font size 11. 3. Applicant must have access to Adobe Professional (not Adobe Reader), as documents must be converted into Portable Document Format (PDF). The names of each file should begin with the last name of the PI or trainee, then an underscore, and then a one or two word description of the item. (Example: lastname_biosketches) LOI Components for Pre and Postdoctoral Fellowships:

Summary: one to three sentence lay description of proposed research. LOI Submission 5. Letter from Sponsor/Mentor: limit to one page. 6. Letter from Chair or Chief: limit to one page. 7. Biosketches of Trainee and Sponsor/Mentor: limit to four pages each (use NIH forms, but include details from other support). List trainee’s biosketch first. 8. Proposal = Letter of Intent: limit to one page. The letter should outline the precise specific aims, describe the broad and high-risk nature of the science, state the approximate budget and duration for the proposed project, detail the role of all team members (if applicable), and clearly indicate how the project will support the goals of the relevant CDI center. List primary investigator’s biosketch first, and then list the rest by alphabetical order. 7. Proposal = Letter of Intent: limit to one page. The letter should outline the precise specific aims, describe the broad and high-risk nature of the science, state the approximate budget and duration for the proposed project, detail the role of all team members (if applicable), and clearly indicate how the project will support the goals of the relevant CDI center. You will be notified on or before August 15 of the status of your LOI. Instructions for the submission of your proposal will be sent to you at that time. Proposals will be due October 15, 2008.
