       SCHOOL ACCOUNTS MORE PARENT FRIENDLY
Parents will receive a new easy-to-understand account which clearly states what they are
required to pay for their child’s stationery and school services from next year.

The new materials and services charge invoices will break down the fee parents are required to
pay and the voluntary portion of the charge.

Information about the 2009 Materials and Services charge will go to schools this week.

Department of Education and Children’s Services chief executive Chris Robinson says the
updates to the procedures are about making accounts more “parent friendly”.

“Each year, schools collect a materials and services fee to cover the costs of essential items and
services used by students over the course of the year,” Mr Robinson says. “In 2009, that
standard fee is $194 for primary school students and $259 for secondary school students.

“Schools may increase their materials and services charge with the majority support of parents
if their materials and services exceed the standard fee.

“To require payment of a higher amount, schools must poll parents and obtain a majority vote in
favour of the increase.”

Mr Robinson says a memo advising of the new procedures will be sent to schools before they
return next term.

“Schools can rest assured there will be sufficient time to apply the new processes before the end
of the year.”

From 2009, schools will also be required to provide all essential stationery items to primary
school students as part of their annual materials and services.

Mr Robinson says the department will work closely with schools on these changes to monitor
the implementation and any issues regarding the updated procedures.

In addition to the memo provided to principals, there will be comprehensive information
available on the department’s website at www.decs.sa.gov/goldbook/ later this week.
