Fashion Trends for Summer

FASHION TRENDS FOR SUMMER 2009
Interestingly, and perhaps as a perverse reaction to the current economic recession, the
fashion trends for Summer are all about excess!
Designers appear to have embraced all that is big and bold and have incorporated these
elements into everything from the reworked strong, broad shoulders of the 80s to
towering-heeled, strappy gladiator sandals. Recession? What recession?! Bright, over-the-top
colour schemes and luxurious fabrics and detail are the name of the game for Summer 2009.
The Eighties are back in style and can be found in sharp-shouldered jackets, strict tailoring, the
return of leather and PVC and acid-washed denim.
The day dress has made a comeback and presents itself in flowers, patterns and polka dots
(polka dots are HUGE!)
Colours are eye-popping with the hottest shades being zingy orange, citrus lemon, and juicy
tangerine. Clash them with strong pinks such as fuschia or raspberry. Greens are cool whilst
blues are electrifying.
Key pieces include washed jeans and plimsolls; harem or dhoti pants (but only if you are tall
enough to carry them off!) - team these with slinky vests; blazers, either cropped or structured;
printed skirts with ruffles or flares; loose fitting tee shirts with roomier sleeves and made from
good quality cotton; and printed tops emblazoned with graphics or slogans.
Statement shoes are gladiator sandals - either skyscraper high or completely flat - with loads of
straps and buckles. Flat pumps stay in style and plimsoles and sneakers are funky and fun.
Stylish accessories are over-sized sunglasses with unusual shapes and quirky colours;
sequinned clutch bags and shoppers; brightly coloured watches and bold bangles; wide
textured belts and trilby hats.
Your make up palette can range from soft pastels with swirls of icy blue to intense jewel colours
in silver, dark blue and purple. Bronzers and highlighers are back in fashion and are used to
give the skin a warm, golden sheen.
Hair styles are fun with braids, plaits and ponytails whilst updos, created with height at the
crown, offer a more sophisticated choice.
So have fun with fashion this summer, either retro or new, and you'll believe that the good times
are back to stay!
