Your past our future

King’s Bruton is putting together an exciting
long-term programme of development that is
set to make us one of the best boarding
      schools in the country.
Our ambition is to make major improvements to our academic facilities, the
boarding houses and our provision in sport, music and the creative arts to offer all
our pupils an education that is second to none.

Such a programme will require significant investment and support from our
community. Few people are in a position to make the level of gift that will endow a
scholarship in perpetuity or fund a new building during their lifetimes; however
most of us have the financial capacity to safeguard the future of those we care about
      most through our wills.

This brochure will introduce the opportunity the School is offering to you to be a
      part of King’s Bruton’s future.

How you can
difference to King’s and your family
It is vital for all of us that we provide security for our friends and
families. Making a will is probably the most important step that
any of us takes to protect the futures of our loved ones.

Once you have made provision for your family, your will becomes an opportunity to
make a clear and significant difference to the causes you care most about.

Because King’s Bruton is supported in its fundraising by its own charitable
foundation, a further benefit to your family is that any gift you make to the School
will reduce the potential tax burden on their inheritance.

Unlike making a single gift today, a pledge to King’s Bruton through your will need
not be set in stone. If your circumstances alter in any way, you can change your
will again to ensure that those you must give priority to are put first.
Your past our future

How you can playasignificant
part in the future of King’s
We invite members of King’s community to consider making a gift through their
wills to the School. An unrestricted gift is the most helpful to the School as it
enables the charity to allocate funds where they will have the maximum benefit at
      the time they become available.

However, if you would prefer that your gift be allocated to a specific need, there are
two funds that have been established for this purpose:

A fund for excellence will support scholarships and bursaries, ensuring that we can
admit pupils on the basis of their aptitude and potential rather than their families’
ability to pay the school fees.

A fund for capital will support the development of major resources and facilities,
including the creation of new buildings and the re-development of existing ones.

All legators will be remembered in official rolls of honour and publications unless
they direct that they would like their gift to remain anonymous.
The different ways in which
    you can help King’s
There are four types of bequest you may consider making to the School:

A pecuniary bequest is a gift of a fixed sum of money. The value of pecuniary

1 legacies may decrease over time due to an increase in the cost of living or inflation.

A specific bequest is a gift of a named item. For example, a painting or a piece of

2 antique furniture.

A residuary bequest is a gift of whatever is left of an estate once all other gifts have

3 been made.

A contingent bequest is only acted upon on the basis of another event.

4 For example, in a will where an individual seeks to care for their family, a
contingent bequest may only come into effect if other family members pre-decease
    the individual making the will.

You should always approach your solicitor before making any changes to a will; they
will be able to offer you guidance as to what action will best match your intentions.

How to make a gift to King’s
that will make all the difference

If you already have a will in place and wish to remember King’s, you can make a
simple amendment to your will through a codicil: please do this with a solicitor or
legal adviser and inform the executors of your will of your intentions.

If you decide to make a residuary bequest to the School, an appropriate wording
      would be as follows:

“I give (%) of the residue of my real and personal estate which I can dispose of by
Will in any manner I think proper to the KSB Foundation (Registered Charity No.
1091337) of King’s School, Bruton, Somerset BA10 0ED and the receipt of the
Honorary Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the KSB
Foundation shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.”

If you decide to make a gift of a set sum (i.e. a pecuniary bequest) to the School, an
appropriate wording would be as follows:

“I give the sum of ...... pounds to the KSB Foundation (Registered Charity No.
1091337) of King’s School, Bruton, Somerset BA10 0ED and the receipt of the
Honorary Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the KSB
Foundation shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.”

      Your solicitor will be
able to advise you of an
      appropriate wording for
      contingent and specific
      bequests.
How we plan to
    thank you
Some of the most important gifts that any school will receive will be made by
individuals through their wills. However, it is not uncommon for such donors to
have no history of previously making a gift.

At King’s we are determined to thank those who remember the School in their wills
and involve them in the projects that their gifts will enable us to take forward.

To this end, King’s Bruton is establishing a legacy society. Anyone who plans to
leave a gift to the School will automatically become a member of the society and
receive invitations to special events at King’s that will include an early opportunity
to learn of the School’s plans for its future.

We hope, very much, that you will wish to consider making a gift to King’s Bruton
through your will. The attached response coupon provides you with an opportunity
to indicate your intentions and to become a member of the School’s legacy society.
A pre-paid response envelope is also included for your convenience.
