Whether you are just leaving school or have been working for years and are thinking of starting a new career, an apprenticeship may be just the right option for you. But you do have to be at least 16 years old (depending on industry regulations). You’ll need a positive attitude and a lot of commitment because an apprenticeship is equivalent to five GCSEs grades A – C. It generally takes between 12 and 15 months to complete. Don’t worry, Catch22 will be there for you. And you can start when you want and complete it at a speed which is right for you. Once you’ve completed your apprenticeship you can go onto an Advanced Apprenticeship. This allows you to take your training further to become a supervisor or manager in the future. Advanced Apprenticeships include a Level 3 NVQ (equivalent to 2 A-levels) and will take between 18 and 24 months. Want to earn While you learn? If you are looking for a job that helps you carry on learning or you already have a job but want further qualifications, our fitness instructor apprenticeship could be the option for you. Working with an employer, you’ll learn skills and build up knowledge as you go which will lead to nationally recognised qualifications. In other words, you will earn while you learn. Health and fitness instructors are responsible for teaching people how to exercise in a safe and effective manner. Our apprenticeship means you could work in a private gym or independent health club, leisure centre or a golf club. You’ll deliver group exercise classes, such as circuits then become more advanced to give one-to-one tuition as a personal trainer. You will devise routines for their exercise classes, choose music and check that the necessary equipment is available, such as weights, steps and mats. Health and fitness instructors often work in a shift pattern, which can include early mornings, evenings and weekends. Gyms are usually open from 7am until 11pm so be prepared for an early start. You’ll need an interest in a healthy lifestyle, nutrition and exercise, you should also: • have good communication and interpersonal skills • be physically fit • be outgoing and friendly • have drive and enthusiasm to motivate people. Fitness instructor Apprenticeship (LeveL 2) Working toWArds Assisting And deLivering gym sessions nvQ Level 2 instructing exercise & Fitness You will work towards five mandatory units: − plan and prepare a gym-based exercise session − instruct a gym-based exercise session − support participants in developing and maintaining fitness − evaluate coaching and develop personal coaching practice − deal with accidents and emergencies. off the job training will cover the following industry recognised qualifications • CYQ Level 2 - Group Indoor Cycling; Circuit Training; Fitness Instructing. • Technical Certificate in Understanding the Fitness, Leisure and Recreation Industry. • Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication Level 1 (You may be exempt depending on your GCSE results). • Your employer will also provide you with two extra qualifications relevant to your environment, such as First Aid and Health & Safety. For example: − CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Exercise Referral for clients with specific controlled conditions − CYQ Level 3 Award for instructing physical activity and exercise for Ante/Post Natal exercise − A1 Assessors Award. GettinG started If you already have a job, talk to your employer to check they are able to support you towards your goal and ask them to call us. We will then arrange a meeting to discuss the programmes in more detail, work out which options are right for you and complete the paperwork to get you started – it’s that easy.
