He replaces June Butler who left the Electoral Office at the end of September. Mr Shields will be responsible for the smooth running of the forthcoming General Election and for the management of four of the Area Electoral Offices. He will also perform a number of key roles in Headquarters functions. Commenting on the appointment Douglas Bain said: “I am delighted that the selection process found someone of Graham Shields calibre to fill the position so ably held by June Butler since 2002. The Assistant Chief Electoral Officer plays a key role in the delivery of free and fair elections as well as in the management of the Electoral Office and its staff. I am very much looking forward to working with Graham and drawing on his wealth of management experience in the run up to the General Election.” Mr Shields will take up appointment in January 2010 upon leaving the PSNI where he currently holds the rank of Chief Superintendent. Notes to Editors Mr Shields was selected by a panel following a public recruitment exercise. He was one of seven candidates interviewed for the post. He has been District Commander of the PSNI’s C District since 1 April 2007. That District covers Ards, Castlereagh, North Down and Down. Mr Shields will work as one of two Assistant Chief Electoral Officers.
