					                                       PELLS POOL NEWS 2005
Report to Members and Friends of the PPCA.
Each year the PPCA learns more about the relatively tricky business of running a totally weather dependent amenity. Each year we refine our operations but the aim
remains the same - to maximise income when the weather is good and minimise expenditure when it is poor. In the 2004 season we saw, in common with p revious
years, daily takings ranging from as little as £20 to £2,000 plus.

Income generated from the highly successful 2003 season enabled us to spend £14,000 to replace plant machinery, purchase equipment and undertake some essential
maintenance work to the paving slabs, the plant room roof and the walls and fencing. Over £20,000 was spent on other fixed costs such as rates, insurance and pool
chemicals. Although it’s not cheap to run the Pells pool we still manage to offer good value for money. If you want to find out more about how we work please
consider joining our committee.

2004 turned out to be a difficult season with only one period of sustained good weather. The income generated during this spell was satisfying, as was the income
from ‘so so’ days. Nevertheless the generally cool and wet season yielded entrance takings too low to be counterbalanced by reasonable refreshments income and
flexible staffing levels and consequently our end of season balance was well down from last years.

                                                                      Lessons learned.
On reflection we have realised that the management structure, devised in response to the hectic activity of the previous season, was unnecessarily top heavy and
expensive. In future years two, not three, full time employees, a manager and deputy, should be recruited and if then the season turns out to be good, another
deputy can be appointed for July and August. We also realise that the guidelines for managing the flexible casual staffing should be clarified. The committee has been
working hard throughout 2004/2005 to completely overhaul and update our NOPs (Normal Operating Procedures) and the lessons learnt from the last season have
been incorporated in to the management guidelines in that document.

                                                                   Starting up this season.
The pre season grant of £5,000 from Lewes Town Council will enable The PPCA to open the pool this summer but with a smaller cash reserve to previous seasons.

                                                                               AGM

                                                                        Season tickets
Season tickets will be available from the kiosk from 5 to 6 pm during the week before we open and also by post. Please write to Heide Chaffey. 92, Western Road,

                                                         Young paddlers and swimmers
The PPCA would like to reiterate the regulations regarding the supervision of young visitors to the pool. Under 8’s (someone who has not reached their eighth
birthday) must be closely supervised at all times by a parent, guardian or responsible person of a minimum age of 16. When under 8’s are in the pool the supervising
adults must be in the pool with them. When youngsters are playing in the paddling pool the supervising adults must be with them keeping a watchful eye on them at
all times.
                                                                        The ratios are as follows:
Under 4’s – One adult per two children 4 – 7’s – One adult per three children

Parking – The new parking scheme in Lewes
In 2004 a new parking scheme was introduced in Lewes and this will affect visitors to the pool this summer. There are parking restrictions and charges throughout
Lewes and this includes the Pells area. We would warn visitors that the scheme is being rigorously enforced by NCP, the local authorities chosen contractor. If you can,
make your journey to the pool either on foot, by bus or by train. Bus and train information is available from Traveline Southeast on 08706 082608. If you have to
use your car the best place to park is at the Brooke Street and Spring Gardens car parks which are situated along Brooke Street less than 100 meters from the pool
(See the map on our leaflet and on the website. The charge periods and prices are as follows: Mon – Sat, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. £2 for up to 10 hours. Outside those
hours and Sundays parking is free.
To maintain our very good relations with the residents of the Pells area we would ask you to not park in the Pells residential area.

The paddling pool - An apology and a promise.
We apologise for the closure of the paddling pool at the beginning of last season and promise that it will be ready on time this season.

                                                                             Website
Our website will be up and running this year with stacks of useful information about the pool and daily updates of pool temperature and news of forthcoming events.
If you don’t have access to the internet all the information you need is contained in our leaflet or you can phone the Pells Pool info line - 01273472334
                                                                  www.pellspool.org.uk
                                                                  Staff for this season.
Last seasons pool manager, Ricardo Magee, has moved on to become a lifeguard trainer and we wish him success in his new venture. We are pleased to welcome Phil
Ransley and Rebecca Reed back this year. Phil will be the manager and Becks the deputy. I am sure many of last season’s lifeguards will be back and, like the
rest of us, will be hoping for a good sunny season.

                                                                         Fundraising.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to our collection at the late night shopping event this Christmas in particular Wendy Stonestreet who put the Pells Pool forward
as a possible recipient in the first place and, along with Simon Anderson, coordinated the collection on the night. We raised just over £2,150. A record! Thanks also
to the Lewes Chamber of Commerce who organised the event and selected the Pells pool to be a recipient. We now have a total of over £8,000 put aside for
improvements to the Pool £5,000 at least of which is allocated as matched funding for a bid we have submitted in partnership with ‘LACEWINGS to ‘Biffaward’. If
the bid is successful it would provide £55,000. This would pay for significant improvements to the pool, the pool surround, changing rooms, plant room and the kiosk.

                                                                          Volunteers.
As ever we are looking for volunteers to help with the daily morning clean up, operating the pool vac, sweeping up, litter picking and gardening. An hour or so before
opening at midday is helpful and you could get the pool to yourself for a few minutes!

                                                                         Committee members.
We are always looking for new members to sit on our committee and bring fresh ideas to our meetings. We meet fortnightly from around March to October and
Monthly at other times with a break over the Christmas period
Meetings are at 8.00pm at Lewes Constitutional club and last between one and one and a half hours.
