Six students from the University of East London have been offered work placements
at Newham Primary Care Trust and Newham University Hospital NHS Trust as part
of their final year health studies course.

Newham Primary Care Trust and Newham University Hospital NHS Trust
established a joint project with the University of East London to offer six work
placement opportunities in a variety of roles from human resources through to
communications roles for the 3rd year BA (Hons) Health studies students.

The scheme is designed to provide students with paid work experience within
Newham NHS Trusts to strengthen their skills and possibly secure full time
employment in the health service when they leave university.

Each student applying for a placement goes through the normal human resources
application process of applying and being interviewed for the job.

A provisional place on the programme will be offered to successful students
following satisfactory references and occupational health clearance. In some cases,
a criminal record check will be required.

Each student undergoes regular development appraisals with their line manager in
order to manage performance and for students to develop in their role. Students are
encouraged to maintain a computerized learning log as an assessment tool and to
encourage the use of modern information technology in learning.

At the end of the placement, students are eligible to apply for permanent posts. An
estimated 90% of students are employed within the NHS after completion of the
      scheme.

One student, Princess Kabba, had this to say about the scheme, “When we were
told about the scheme I thought oh great, this may be a big stepping stone. What a
brilliant way to gain a real insight into how the NHS works and also a chance for me
to put into practice all the theories I have acquired through my course about the
NHS. I was very lucky to be placed within the Education, Learning and
Development Department within the Human Resources Department. I absolutely
love working here and have gained and improved numerous skills such as time
keeping, prioritising, organization and computer skills, communication and most
importantly working with a wide range of professional groups. I would definitely
recommend this scheme to students as it’s an excellent way of gaining quality
experiences and skills which are vital.”

David Stout, Chief Executive, Newham Primary Care Trust said, “I am pleased that
the Trust is able to offer work placements to students from the University of East
