The countries that form the Middle East and North Africa bloc are Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel,
Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey,
United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Umm al-Qawayn and Ras al-Khaymah)
and Yemen.

Business Source Complete (BSC)
Portal Library database
Business Source Complete holds a large number of country reports from the following information providers:
CountryWatch, Datamonitor, EIU, Global Insight, the ICON Group, Political Risk Yearbook,, Business Monitor
International and the US Superintendent of Publications’ Background notes on Countries of the World. BSC
normally divides each report into sections e.g. political, economic, social, environmental, investment etc. Full
reports can be quite long. In Advanced Search, choose Country Report / Country or Region or Publisher

Global Insight
Portal Library database
This database covers country risk, economic, and market forecasting as well as providing detailed coverage of
the automotive, telecoms, energy and healthcare markets
Select Country Intelligence > Middle East and North Africa as a region or scroll down for individual
countries.

Source OECD
Portal Library database
Source OECD contains an electronic version of the publication called Economic surveys. It is basically a
annual series with an report for each OECD country. Each issue contains a country overview, chapters on
public expenditure and economic policies, and an assessment of prospects for that country written by the
OECD. NB Only Turkey is an OECD member.

Portal Library database
GMID provides international statistics and also full market reports from Euromonitor. The statistics provide
background data (demographics, cultural and economic indicators key economic indicators) and also specific
consumer product data such as volume and value data (actual and forecast).

This database provides long-term macro and micro economic time series for over 200 countries. It provides
tools for graphing and analyzing the data. To access this data, use the Data Insight link from within Global
Insight database.
All MENA countries are listed.

International Financial Statistics
Library only – PCs in the Bay
This database includes Macroeconomic data, Commodity prices, Trade statistics, Interest Rates and
Exchange rates easily downloadable. Data is from the International Monetary Fund’s International Financial
Statistics publication.
All MENA countries are listed.

Source OECD
Portal Library database
SourceOECD offers access to all 14 OECD statistical databases covering key areas of macroeconomic data,
including Economic Outlook, Employment, Industrial Structure, International Trade, Direct Investment, Main
Economic Indicators, and National Accounts.
Only Turkey is an OECD member.

3. Company data
OSIRIS
Portal Library database
OSIRIS covers 27,500 publicly quoted companies worldwide.
Data includes: standardised and as reported financials, up to ten years in detail and a maximum of twenty
years key financials, key ratios (profitability, operations, structure and per employee), directed shareholders,
stock price data, news and ratings. It can also provide a peer report with comparisons from four to twenty
compatible companies. It includes share price data (including price high and low and volume data, comparative
indices and beta factors) going back a maximum of one year weekly or seven years monthly.
NB Some of the data indicated in the menu may not be available under to the terms of our
subscription.
About 2000 companies located in Middle East and North Africa are available in OSIRIS (search by
location).

Capital IQ covers international companies and private equity investment.
It includes both public and private companies. It offers a wide range of different data, company profiles,
financials, executives, subsidiaries, news and capital changes, stock data, peer group analysis and industry
data. Company and executive relationships can be explored and projects can be saved.
NB Pre-registration is required in order to use this product. We do not subscribe to the linked Multex Reports
or MarketResearch.com data.
Screen by Geographic Locations. About 15000 companies located in Middle East and North Africa

Bloomberg
Library only – two dedicated terminals
This database covers international companies and markets It provides company descriptions, up to ten years
of financials, interest rates, time series of statistics, company and industrial news. For financial data use the
function FA, for analysts’ coverage and recommendations use ANR, for M & A data use MA and then choose
option 1. Data can be downloaded into Excel.
Select the function and then narrow your search with geographical location.

DataStream
Database available in Library only.
DataStream covers international companies, markets and economic statistics. It includes company accounts
and ratios, equity and capital market data, interest and exchange rates, economic and industrial statistics on
long time series for all data. Easy to download data. Use the DataStream AFO (Advance for Office) version to
download straight into Excel.
Search can be narrow down by searching by markets.

Factiva
Portal Library database
This database includes global newspapers, journals, trade press and newswires. Key newspapers include: The
Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, Handelsblatt, Les Echos, South
China Morning Post, Yomiuri Shimbun, and many local papers worldwide. Use the companies and markets
option to obtain a customised company profile and the quotes option to obtain share price data in a
downloadable format
You can search for companies by regions.

ISI Emerging Markets
Portal Library database. Available on campus only
ISI Emerging Markets gives access to articles and reports on companies located in the MENA countries.
Please note however that content from sources may only be available for one country.
You can search for companies by countries.

Perfect Filings
Portal Library database
Perfect Filings gives access to key documents filed by public companies. It covers European reports and
accounts from 1996, UK from 1990, Asia Pacific from 1997, and the rest of the world. Additionally it includes
the London Stock Exchange Regulatory News service (including interims, director’s shareholdings, board
changes and other announcements and also company circulars/shareholders documents including
prospectuses, IPOs, share issues and acquisition documents.)
NB: The Perfect Information SEC EDGAR Online service, ISMA Bonds and UK Private Companies and
Research options are NOT available. Please use FAME for UK private company accounts data.


Thomson Deals
Portal Library database
This database covers M&A, equities and bonds and gives details of over 400,000 transactions worldwide from
1977. It is a subset of the data held on SDC Platinum, and offers a simplified search interface with a number of
convenient pre-set formats. It offers searching on a range of criteria and includes tender offers, stake
purchases, repurchases, MBOs/LBOs and rumoured and seeking buyer transactions.
Location criteria can be set up in the Advanced search>Company Information > Location




4. Market and industry
GMID (Global Market Intelligence Database)
Portal Library database
GMID provides international statistics and also full market reports. The Market Reports provide market studies
covering both consumer and industrial markets for a wide range of countries. The reports are produced by
Euromonitor.

This database provides news, analysis and company data for markets in the BRIC and MENA regions. Use the
free text search option to find articles and news stories or use the database categories and search by industry,
country or company.

Business Source Complete
Portal Library database
This database provides full text articles for some 11,200 academic and business journals covering
management, economics, finance, accounting, international business and specific trades and industries.
Market data will be included in certain articles.
NB It also contains concise Datamonitor Industry Profiles.

Factiva
Portal Library database
Factiva comprises some 8,000 sources in 22 languages from 118 countries. It includes key newspapers,
journals and trade press. Use the Intelligence indexing option to limit to market research. (Choose the
Corporate/Industrial News heading, and then pick the sub-headings Marketing Research and Market Search
(‘or’ these together.) To access the limited selection of Investext reports available on Factiva go to the
Companies/Markets tab and pick industry reports.

business. It includes company profiles from Datamonitor. It has exclusive current and archived content, via
PDF, for Harvard Business Review and over 750 peer-reviewed titles (full text articles for some 4,100

Portal Library database
360 Search searches a number of databases in one go using a simplified search interface. It includes: Factiva,
Business Source Complete, Elsevier Science Direct (which despite the name covers more than science),
Econlit and Emerald. It shows results clustered by author and journal so you can see which journals may be
the most appropriate for your research.

eFinancialNews, the web-based version includes all the content of its Financial News weekly sister paper.
The print version is kept by the Library for six months. eFinancialNews analyses trends and issues and
provides detailed coverage of M&A, private equity, debt and equity capital markets, fund management, and IT
recruitment.

Report: Islamic Finance 2009
(Free web resource)
An IFSL report on Islamic Finance 2009 estimated that the global market for Islamic financial services rose by
37% to $729bn at end-2007. The industry has felt the influence of the credit crunch and downturn in the global
economy in 2008. IFSL produced the report and datasheets annually.
